Crownless: The Fallen World - Chapter 21
Aires nodded towards the cashier. After he was done with his 3rd basket, he motioned at Hale to close his baskets to him. He started putting them again on the conveyor counter, continual sound of beeps erupting out of the machine.
The last item of their 7th basket was beeped but Aires saw a complex stick at the side of the counter. He got those and beeped them in too. He pursed his lips when he saw the extremely long list of groceries listed on the paper.
“That’ll be 87,983 Kline, sir.” Aires suddenly became a statue, his right hand holding his wallet and his left hand stopped reaching out to get the bills.
His eyes looked at the spot where Hale disappeared from, he groaned and fished out 88 bills, “Can you separate the umbrella from the groceries? Also, keep the change.”
“Yes,” The cashier held out three small black boxes and it scanned the groceries before it disappeared into it, he gave the two metal sticks to Aires and the boxes, “Thank you, sir. Please come again.”
I will come again, but I won’t bring the other with me. My wallet will suffer.
“Yes, I will. Thanks,” Aires stepped out of the automatic sliding door, holding umbrellas in his right hand like swords while the small boxes were in his pockets.
He then saw a dazed Hale looking above. The taller male walked closer then handing out the umbrella towards the smaller, which he accepted, “Here. I figured that it might rain later and we have no umbrella in hand.”
Aires looked up, seeing a bigger thick cloud than earlier, yellow and white lines often coming out of it. He pondered, “This is new… it might be the difference of lands.”
“I felt something bad coming from it, Aires. I can’t seem to put a finger on it.”
Aires looked around and saw the judging look of the citizens towards them. He concluded that they just deemed it just as an ordinary rain cloud since it often rained in Gavin City.
“Never mind that. Come on, it’s already late and I still have to cook for our dinner. I’m starving!” Aires put his arm on Hale’s back, pushing him to the road they took earlier.
“Aires, I really feel something bad about it,” Hale panicked while being pushed by Aires’.
Aires neared his mouth on Hale’s ears, whispering in a deep and hushed voice, “We’ll talk about it when we arrived in the hotel room. If you really felt something incredibly bad about it, we’ll go up the penthouse to take a closer look, okay?”
Hale gulped but eventually nodded.
They arrived in Starframe Hotel, setting some of their groceries on the kitchen island and some of it went into Aires’ Holowrist. Aires started to cook their dinner, his own recipe of burger steak, in a quantity for 6 people.
When Aires was busy cooking and running around, Hale stood by the window, intently staring at the still dark and thick cloud. Furthermore, it was getting thicker and thicker by the minute that only he can see the slight changes.
“Hale, come and eat now.” Aires removed his black apron and rolled down his black sleeves once he set up the meal down on the table.
Hale sat down and stared at the thick burger, poking the soft and tender meat. He cut a small piece and ate it, the soft meat and the juices spreads out of his entire mouth, softly coating his tongue in goodness. Then he wolfed down almost half of the cooked meat along with its viscous cheesy gravy, stealing a small portion from Aires’.
Aires was the one that finished first, who went into the kitchen again and decided to make Hale a set of his homemade sandwich. His Holowrist vibrated again, which he forgot the previous call because he never really checked anything.
He answered the call while assembling the sandwich, “What?”
“Why didn’t you answer earlier?” It was Axel, who was casually sitting on the passenger seat along with 5 other people inside the moving van.
“Sorry. We were outside and the people here never really used or seen a Holowrist.”
“Okay… we were from the first stop over and we just drove, I forgot to ask you where were the two of you.”
“We’re in Gavin City.”
The other line went silent as they processed the information, “Wait… you-you’re in another island?!” Axel’s voice was muffled when he turned around to ask the students at his back, “Can you check whose jurisdiction the Gavin City is? And what number will we monitor it?”
“Gavin City is currently ruled by Lord Kassean Gavin along with Lady Arya Kim. Because it is in another island, we were tasked to monitor it after the 25th city, town, or village,” A monotonous voice rang out right behind Axel’s seat.
“We’re doomed…” Axel turned his attention at the call, “It looks like… we have to skip the other 25 to get to you. Since we can’t really do any proper mission without you.”
“No. We’ll spend, at most, 2 weeks here. Do the task you were given. Moreover, I picked all of you to be able to work as one and the only thing you need is cooperation. I appointed the brain of the operation as you, Axel. The fighters, I picked two and three at the support line. You all can do it, I believe in all of you.”
“Now, Axel, give me the list of the places you’re going to monitor. Cross out the 26th, Hale and I will do it.”
“Yes, Lord Aires!” The people shouted in chorus, “I’ll send it when this call ends.”
“Yeah. When we’re done here, we’ll do some of the places while in our path to get to you.”
Axel nodded, “By the way, Lord Aires, Lord Kael was fuming when he said that you forgot to meet up with him. He also said that he won’t let you go once he saw you.”
“…”
The poor sandwich was crushed under the strong grip of the forgetful male.
