The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 35
The moon was at its zenith, and Li Yuanzhen leaned against the window, gazing at the dead white camellia tree in front of the gate. She couldn’t sleep, her thoughts consumed by how her aunt might save the camellia tree.
It was a full moon. Her mansion, situated on high ground, overlooked a broad area. The moonlight was like frost, illuminating the night outside. Li Yuanzhen rested her chin on her hand and stared blankly. Suddenly, she saw a white figure standing vaguely under the dead camellia tree.
The misty white shadow, translucent in the moonlight, with sleeves fluttering, seemed to be gazing back at her from afar. Li Yuanzhen was stunned for a moment, then her eyes widened. This figure had appeared in her dreams for the past ten years, the one she had yearned to see again day and night.
It had become an obsession, an unspeakable longing that consumed her thoughts.
Li Yuanzhen abruptly ran out of the palace door, racing down the stairs. Her hair was loose, and she wore a pair of phoenix shoes. As she hurried down the stairs, her shoes fell off, but she paid no attention. Her sole focus was on the figure, terrified that if she was even a moment late, it would vanish.
The palace maids, startled by her sudden action, chased after her with shawls and lanterns.
“Princess! Princess!”
“Your Highness, what’s wrong? Slow down, be careful not to fall!”
Li Yuanzhen shouted without looking back, “No one is allowed to follow me. Go back, no one is allowed to follow me!”
The maids halted immediately, exchanging worried glances but not daring to pursue. They watched as Li Yuanzhen reached the white camellia tree.
Panting, Li Yuanzhen stopped and looked up at the man in white beneath the tree. He remained still, his gaze on her, just as it had been ten years ago and in her dreams, silent and unwavering.
Li Yuanzhen stood before him, momentarily at a loss for words. Seeing him smile at her, she responded with a smile of her own, her eyes grew misty with emotion.
“I…” Li Yuanzhen clutched the hem of her skirt. Stepping barefoot on the soft soil, she felt as if she were treading on clouds. Her voice was light, almost as though it didn’t come from her own mouth. “I don’t know your name yet.”
The man smiled again and shook his head.
Li Yuanzhen saw the withered white camellia tree behind him through his translucent form and burst into tears, recalling their first meeting.
“I don’t know your name yet,” she repeated through her sobs.
Li Yuanzhen watched as the man approached her, taking her hand and placing a flower bud in her palm. With a flick of his finger, the flower bloomed, its four white petals encircling a tender yellow stamen.
“This is the flower that bloomed this year.” Li Yuanzhen thought of the phrase inexplicably. Though she couldn’t hear the man’s voice, she felt strongly that he had come to say goodbye.
When the man released her hand and stepped back, Li Yuanzhen panicked, clutching the flower tightly and reaching for his clothes.
“Don’t go!” Li Yuanzhen felt as though she couldn’t grasp the man’s clothes. She watched him disappear before her eyes. Her nose tingled, and she wanted to cry again. Just then, a voice suddenly spoke, “Xiao Yuanzhen, give me the flower in your hand.”
Startled, Li Yuanzhen choked back her impending cry, hiccuping as she turned her head sharply. Wu Zhen stood behind her.
“Auntie?” It was the middle of the night. How did her aunt get into the palace and quietly come up behind her? Li Yuanzhen also noticed that the palace maids nearby were lying on the ground, unconscious. What was happening?
She had seen the man Ji Ling with her own eyes, so why couldn’t she accept her sudden appearance in the middle of the night? Wu Zhen noticed Li Yuanzhen’s dazed expression and took the white camellia from her hand, examining it carefully.
“It is indeed the last bit of essence that has been condensed.” After Wu Zhen spoke, she blew a breath forward. A white mist swirled around her, and the figure of the man, who had been dissipating, reformed, though he appeared more ethereal.
The Princess, already stunned by Wu Zhen blowing out a thick cloud of mist, was even more astonished to see the man reappear.
Wu Zhen flipped her hand and produced a wooden hairpin adorned with a lifelike white camellia. Pointing the hairpin forward, she addressed the silent man, “If you live in this hairpin, you will be safe, but you must give up your original body and never be free again. Are you willing?”
After the man glanced at Li Yuanzhen and nodded, Wu Zhen turned to Li Yuanzhen, asking, “Yuanzhen, are you willing to support this spirit…”
Li Yuanzhen quickly gathered her senses and shouted, “I do!”
Wu Zhen said helplessly, “Just listen to me, why are you in such a hurry?”
Li Yuanzhen shrank back obediently. “Aunt, you say.”
Wu Zhen looked at her seriously. “Have you really thought it through? He is not an ordinary man, but a kind of spirit called Ji Ling. Although he has consciousness, he cannot speak. Although he can see, he cannot accompany you all the time…”
Li Yuanzhen couldn’t help but say, “I’m very happy to see him.”
Wu Zhen raised an eyebrow. “How can a Princess be so stupid? Don’t you think about other things?”
The sixteen-year-old Li Yuanzhen had a look of ignorance on her face, and the spirit not far away also exuded a pure and clean aura.
Wu Zhen: “…Forget it, you are still young. Let’s talk about other things later.”
As she spoke, she held Li Yuanzhen’s hands and pinched her fingertips. Blood dripped from Li Yuanzhen’s ten fingers one after another, and the ten drops of blood gathered into a ball and fell into Wu Zhen’s hands. Wu Zhen flicked the blood beads into the air, which instantly turned into a red thread to bind the white-clothed man’s body that was about to dissipate. At the same time, Wu Zhen also flicked the white camellia that the man left for Li Yuanzhen towards him, saying, “Enter!”
The figure of the man in white involuntarily turned into a wisp of green smoke wrapped in red and floated into the white camellia. Wu Zhen stretched out her hand and held the white camellia in her hand. She placed the white camellia that the man had temporarily entrusted to her on the wooden camellia hairpin, and suddenly a bright glow appeared under her palm, just like the moonlight.
Under this light, the white camellia blended into the camellia wood hairpin. When the two were completely integrated, the originally wooden camellia wood hairpin suddenly became lustrous and shiny, as if it were carved from white jade, with a faint scent of freshness.
Wu Zhen closed her eyes, letting her pupils return to their original state. Then she casually inserted the hairpin in her hand into Li Yuanzhen’s hair. Li Yuanzhen didn’t even dare to move her head. After carefully taking the hairpin off, she stared blankly at it for a while, then excitedly raised the hairpin with a red face and asked, “Is he in there?”
Wu Zhen confirmed, “Yes, from now on you must carry him with you every day.”
