The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 30
After Wu Zhen said that she wanted to bring forward the wedding date. In one sentence, the wedding date originally scheduled after the Dragon Boat Festival was moved to before the Dragon Boat Festival. Miss Wu was used to being willful, and no one could control her, so the craftsmen in various shops who were making utensils and clothes for her wedding started working in a hurry. Fortunately, many valuable utensils had been prepared long ago, and the remaining things were not difficult to finish.
Mei Zhuyu also had a lot to prepare. His parents were both dead, and the only elders he had close to him in Chang’an were Mei Shangshu, Mei Si’s father, and the Imperial Concubine in the palace. There were many things that needed the help of elders to avoid being too busy, so Mei Zhuyu often visited Mei Si in recent days and interacted with him more frequently.
Mei Si loved his future brother-in-law… no, his cousin who was going to marry his eldest sister, and his attitude towards him became better. He always chatted with him for a while when he saw him.
When Mei Zhuyu came to visit again, Mei Si happened to be at home. Seeing him coming, he came over excitedly and said to him, “Cousin, I’ve thought of a gift for you guys!”
The group of friends had been arguing for a long time about what gift to give. Cui Jiu said he wanted to give a golden screen with peonies embroidered on it with gold thread but was ridiculed by the group of people, who said it was too vulgar and boring; Zhao Langjun said a while ago that he would give two rare and good horses, but a few days ago he changed his mind and said he wanted to give a tiger, and the day before when everyone got together, he changed his mind again and said he wanted to give a large fox fur enough to cover the bed, but he still had no idea; Sun Niangzi said she wanted to make a box of fine incense herself; everyone seemed to have their own ideas.
Only Mei Si was struggling for a long time and had no idea about the gift. Because no matter how he looked at it, as a relative and friend, the gift he gave must be better and more sincere than anyone else’s.
After thinking hard for a long time, Mei Si finally had an idea that morning and figured out what gift he should give.
“Guess what it is, cousin!”
“Forget it, you definitely won’t be able to guess it, so I won’t tell you. I’ll give you a surprise then!”
“Okay, I won’t say any more. I’m going to buy the best paper and brush while there’s still time!”
Mei Si talked a lot to himself, not caring about Mei Zhuyu’s reaction. The more he thought about it, the more excited he became, and he almost danced as he went out.
Mei Zhuyu: “…” Since that was what he said, the gift would be probably a painting he drew himself. According to his cousin’s usual preferences, it would be mostly a picture of ghosts or something to ward off evil spirits.
Mei Si happily strode down the street, hands on his hips, thinking his gift must be the most sincere and special. After the wedding, he would let Sister Zhen and his cousin hang it in the house to ensure that all evil spirits would not invade and they would be safe and sound.
For that reason, Mei Si decided to temporarily put aside the various ghosts he was planning to paint from White Snake’s “Notes on Monsters and Ghosts” and concentrate on preparing Thousand Ghosts to Exorcize Evil Spirits. In order to be worthy of Sister Zhen’s wedding, Mei Si wanted to buy some better paper and brush. He was good at painting and often went to these shops selling brushes, ink, and paper, but he looked around and couldn’t find anything satisfactory, so he had no choice but to go out and look for other shops.
After searching for a whole day, Mei Si still couldn’t find the paper and brush he wanted. He was very depressed. He was about to go home and ask his friends if they had a better one, when he was knocked down by a passerby in a hurry.
The man was wearing a veil that covered his face and body, so one could only tell that he was a man. He was also knocked back, and a wooden box in his hand fell to the ground and flipped over, revealing a roll of glossy paper and a dark purple brush inside.
Mei Si’s eyes widened when he saw the paper and brush. He knew at a glance that the paper and brush were not ordinary. They were exactly what he wanted. He didn’t care that he was knocked down. Mei Si rushed over and hugged the box, asking anxiously, “Will you sell this paper and brush! Please sell them to me!”
The man wearing the veil said in a hoarse voice, “This is originally intended for consignment. It would be better if you want to buy it. It would save me from having to walk a long way.”
After he named a price, Mei Si readily agreed, paid the money immediately, thanked him happily, and hurried home with the wooden box in his arms. With such good paper and pen, he would surely be able to draw better than ever before.
The man in the veil who was standing there and watching him leave chuckled, walked into a dark alley, and instantly disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
Mei Si rushed back home, not caring about anything else, and plunged into his study. He carefully unfolded the roll of paper, rubbed it lightly with his fingers, and instantly revealed an intoxicated look on his face. After grinding the ink that he usually didn’t want to use, Mei Si took a deep breath and picked up the brush that felt very good. According to the picture in his mind, he began to draw on the paper.
Although he had never seen real ghosts, he liked them. His imagination was enough to create a new world, and that world was about to appear in his pen.
Mei Si painted excitedly until the lights in the room went out. Then he realized how exhausted he was. He forced himself to pack up his paper and pen. He walked a few steps to the couch, fell down, and fell asleep without realizing it.
In the quiet night, the picture that Mei Si had spread out on the table suddenly shook slightly. Dozens of dark and ferocious evil spirits on it seemed to come alive, their eyeballs twitched on the paper, and then a large mass of dark black was pulled out of the paper, rising into the air and gathering into the appearance of living evil spirits.
They passed through the doors and walls silently and disappeared into the dark night.
On the second day, Mei Si slept until noon and got up. The first thing he did was to look at the picture he had drawn. But when he walked to the desk, he was stunned. After a long time, he let out a scream, which attracted the servants outside the door.
“Master, what’s wrong? What happened?”
Mei Si fell down at the desk in disbelief, stroking the smooth surface of the paper again. There was nothing on it, not a trace of ink at all.
“How could it be? How could it be possible? Where are the evil spirits I drew yesterday? I drew dozens of them! I drew them so well and I wanted to admire them in the morning. How could they be gone?”
After the servants heard what he was saying, they looked at each other and asked, “Master, did you paint yesterday? Were you dreaming?”
“Yes, otherwise how could there be no trace on this paper?”
Mei Si held his head which was still a little dizzy after waking up, and stared blankly at the blank paper, saying, “Am I dreaming now, or was I dreaming when I was drawing last night?” Finally, he wiped his eyes carefully several times and had to admit that it was probably the picture he drew in his dream last night, so there was nothing on the paper after he woke up.
