Reborn Lady - Chapter 376
Emperor Yongping spent a year in Pingcheng before returning to Jinling in February, this time to prepare for the relocation of the capital.
The new capital city had been constructed, and gradually the Imperial Court, officials, and their families would be relocated there. The first wave of moving consisted of the Emperor’s relatives.
Upon receiving the decree, Yin Hui eagerly arranged for packing to commence. Moving was a tiring task, and even though Yin Hui didn’t handle it directly, the thought of it was enough to weigh on her mind. However, the anticipation of going to Pingcheng filled Yin Hui with excitement, and she couldn’t wait to board the boat with her family and head north.
In the end, several royal relatives and their families gathered to form a group, resembling the one that had arrived when they came.
Meanwhile, the Crown Prince remained in Jinling with Emperor Yongping, while the Crown Princess set off first with everyone from the East Hall. Only two young concubines stayed behind to attend to the Crown Prince’s daily needs.
Married grandchildren had their own ships, while unmarried ones shared a ship with several others. Only grandchildren aged five or younger stayed with their parents, as the ships weren’t large enough to accommodate accidental encounters with adult activities.
Wei Ning also separated from her parents this time, and stayed with the Crown Princess together with Wei Zhuang and Wei Bao.
Xu Qingwan thought that it would be boring to travel on the ship alone, so she requested her nieces to accompany her. Despite having two daughters-in-law, they needed to tend to Da Lang and San Lang. Xu Qingwan couldn’t bring herself to separate the young couples by forcefully taking them with her.
She was willing to look after the three nieces, and Yin Hui naturally agreed. With the girls sitting together in a boat, inevitable bumps and squabbles could occur over time. But with Xu Qingwan present, the children would likely behave and avoid any conflicts.
Wei Ning was under Xu Qingwan’s care, while Wei Heng and Wei Xun shared a ship with Liu Lang and Ba Lang, further easing Yin Hui’s worries.
As the fleet set off, on Prince Shu’s ship, only two figures, Yin Hui and Wei Luo, occupied the spacious ship, lending an air of tranquility to the surroundings.
Back when they first arrived in Jinling, Wei Luo spent a month teaching his two sons. Now that they were heading north, the children were all grown up and could handle being a ship on their own. With nothing else to occupy his time, Wei Luo devoted all his energy to Yin Hui.
It seemed that Yin Hui and Wei Luo hadn’t been alone together for so long; they were practically inseparable day and night.
In their youth, when they first got married, the two were inseparable at night. However, during the day, Wei Luo always had tasks to attend to, and Yin Hui rarely saw his shadow. Not long after their marriage, Yin Hui became pregnant, and their nighttime encounters became less frequent. Whenever they did manage to spend time together, the children were always nearby.
“Do you think what we’re doing now is like newlyweds eager to go out together?” Yin Hui murmured, lying in Wei Luo’s arms, her face nestled against his chest.
There was no light in the cabin, rendering it pitch black, impossible to see one’s own fingers. Wei Luo’s hand caressed her face, feeling the thin and smooth skin, still slightly warm.
“You’re still very young,” Wei Luo replied, his voice hoarse from their intimate moments, softer than usual, almost like sweet nothings.
Yin Hui lifted the corner of her mouth, grasped his fingertips, and planted a light kiss on them.
One month later, the group arrived at Tongzhou Wharf.
First to disembark were Xu Qingwan and her nieces, followed by Wei Yan and Ji Xianxian, and then Yin Hui and the others.
Ji Xianxian, talking with Wei Zhuang, glanced toward the bow of the ship and saw Yin Hui, supported by Wei Luo, stepping onto the shore. Her cheeks were soft and fair, resembling a delicately nurtured white peony, despite being in her thirties. Her eyes, clear as a young girl’s, betrayed no signs of age.
Ji Xianxian suddenly bit her lip and shot Wei Yan a sharp glance.
Over the past month, although she and Wei Yan had been living on the same ship, Wei Yan’s two concubines were also on board. In truth, Ji Xianxian had grown accustomed to these minor inconveniences and didn’t pay them much mind. However, during a conversation about family matters, Wei Yan had shown impatience, dismissing her concerns as those of an overly anxious mother-in-law. It had left a bitter taste in Ji Xianxian’s mouth.
Ji Xianxian was unaware of the fine lines forming around her eyes. No matter how she angled the mirror, she couldn’t see them. It was Wei Yan who pointed it out to her, suggesting she smile. Reluctantly, Ji Xianxian complied, only to notice a few faint lines at the corners of her eyes.
This revelation left Ji Xianxian disheartened, causing her to lose her appetite for almost half a month.
She was only four years older than Yin Hui, yet Yin Hui appeared youthful and fresh, while Ji Xianxian felt aged beyond her years.
Perhaps, Ji Xianxian speculated, if Yin Hui smiled, her fine lines might also appear. With this thought in mind, Ji Xianxian approached Yin Hui, intentionally trying to make her smile.
However, even when Yin Hui smiled, the corners of her eyes remained unchanged—still beautifully youthful. This realization only worsened Ji Xianxian’s mood.
She then watched as Fu Shan and Wang Junfang disembarked from the ship, one after the other. Both were young, and comparing herself to them was like asking to be humiliated.
Ji Xianxian’s gaze landed on Xu Qingwan’s face.
However, Xu Qingwan was never considered attractive, so Ji Xianxian shifted her attention to Concubine Meng, who was adored by the Crown Prince and had borne him two sons.
Concubine Meng’s beauty was renowned for her pair of unique fox-like eyes. Despite being the same age as Yin Hui and having been equally pampered, Ji Xianxian noticed upon closer inspection that the outer corners of Aunt Meng’s eyes had begun to droop. This drooping gave her a noticeable appearance of aging, robbing her once captivating gaze of its youthful allure.
