The King of Yan valued not only the wealth of the Yin family but also appreciated the skills of Yin Yong, a seasoned businessman who had prospered as the richest man in Yandi since his youth.

At sixty-one years old, Yin Yong, despite his age, was still robust. Unlike others of the same age confined to bed due to illness, Yin Yong, who had traveled extensively, displayed vitality. In King Yan’s eyes, Yin Yong’s vigor was evident, especially after his recent trip from Jiangnan the previous year.

Upon agreeing to Yin Yong’s “plea” for a donation, King Yan promptly appointed him to an official position—Grain and Grass Transport Envoy. This role involved overseeing the preparation of the army’s food, grass, and other essential materials. In this special period, Yin Yong was tasked with raising funds and managing resources efficiently. Given Yin Yong’s background, this labor-intensive position was tailor-made for him. While Yin Yong focused on preparations, the actual transportation of the supplies would be overseen by his appointed military officer.

King Yan not only accepted money from the Yin family but also reciprocated with benefits. To sweeten the deal, he assigned Yin Lang as an assistant messenger to support the elderly man. This arrangement ensured a fair exchange, acknowledging the contributions of the Yin family and fostering a sense of loyalty among its members. Since the major task had not yet been accomplished, most officials were appointed on a temporary basis, with their ranks to be determined later based on their merits. King Yan intended to reward each of them for their contributions once the significant undertaking was successfully completed.

Yin Yong, expressing gratitude, asked, “My lord, what virtues does this old man possess…”

“Don’t underestimate yourself, old man. This king is currently in the process of recruiting talent, and I hope you’ll do your best to assist me!” After King Yan expressed these words, Yin Yong, accompanied by Yin Lang, gratefully accepted the appointment by kneeling down.

With other matters awaiting his attention, King Yan instructed Wei Luo to take Yin Yong to Chengxin Hall for breakfast. After a brief moment for tidying up, each individual would proceed with their respective duties.

Exiting Cunxin Hall, Yin Yong whispered to Wei Luo, “Third Master, you have suffered because of my unfilial descendant.”

Wei Luo looked at the old man and replied, “Fortune and misfortune are intertwined. Yin Wen’s betrayal inadvertently aided my father.”

Without Yin Wen’s involvement, the court wouldn’t have found a reason to accuse his father of rebellion, and the Emperor, instigated by Huang Ren and Qi Tao, might not have initiated the campaign to eliminate vassal kings. By framing his grandfather, Yin Wen, who had been expelled from the family due to unfilial piety, intended to garner favor with the court. However, he miscalculated his grandfather’s capabilities.

Yin Wen believed that aligning with the court and framing his grandfather would be a commendable act. If his grandfather had truly been captured by Zhang Bing and Xie Gui, Yin Wen’s actions would have appeared justified. Unfortunately for him, he underestimated his grandfather’s resilience.

Wei Luo’s perspective resonated with Yin Yong. If King Yan had lost, he would likely have harbored deep resentment toward the Yin family. However, since King Yan had successfully reversed the situation in a single night, Yin Wen’s betrayal provided him with an opportunity to cause trouble. In reality, King Yan couldn’t genuinely despise the Yin family. By seizing the chance to make a monetary donation, King Yan acknowledged the grandfather and grandson with official status before the silver even left the Yin family.

Yin Yong’s inquiry stemmed from a concern that Wei Luo might not share the same understanding as King Yan, potentially leading to blame directed at his young granddaughter. To his surprise, Wei Luo’s clear perception delighted Yin Yong more than King Yan’s official appointments.

Wealth could be regained when lost, but no one could take away a person’s talent. Wei Luo possessed talent; his granddaughter was not married to the wrong person.

“That’s because King Yan and you are broad-minded; otherwise, our Yin family wouldn’t know how to make amends,” Yin Yong sighed.

Wei Luo, avoiding pleasantries, shifted the conversation to the old man’s errand. When the first Emperor was alive, the food in Yan Palace was supplied by the Imperial Court. The palace only needed to send people to transport it when going on an expedition. Although there was also food in storage, it would rely on the preparation of the transshipment envoy. The burden on Yin Yong was heavy. There would be rewards for doing well, but if something went wrong and harmed the army, even with the family property donated by Yin Yong, he could lose his head.

The Yin family was tied to the same boat as King Yan’s family, and Wei Luo was on the same boat. Whether for himself or his wife, Wei Luo hoped that Yin Yong would do a good job as a food transshipment envoy.

Yin Yong said, “Don’t worry, Third Master. I will not disappoint King Yan’s trust.”

For the sake of the Yin family, for his granddaughter, and for the two lively and lovely great-grandchildren, Yin Yong also wanted to feed King Yan’s army.

Hastening their steps, the three of them arrived at Chengxin Hall during their conversation.

Chang Feng hurriedly asked An Shun’er to inform the madam. He took the bloody battle armor that the third master had taken off and scrubbed it.

Wei Luo’s robe was also stained with blood. Worried about scaring Mrs.Yin, he asked the grandfather and grandson of the Yin family to sit in the hall, have tea first, and strode into the inner room.

When Yin Hui ran over, Wei Luo was still inside.

At that moment, Yin Hui didn’t have the heart to think about him. She ran to her grandfather in two or three steps and asked anxiously, “Grandfather, how is everything at home?”

Yin Yong smiled and said, “Thanks to the lord, it can’t be better.”

Yin Hui didn’t quite understand, so Yin Lang explained the process.

Upon learning that Yin Wen’s actions in the capital had caused trouble for the Yin family and prompted King Yan’s early rebellion, Yin Hui gritted her teeth in frustration. Observing that Wei Luo had not come out, Yin Yong understood that his grandson-in-law was providing him an opportunity to explain matters clearly to his granddaughter. Leading Yin Hui a little further away, he revealed Yin Wen’s act of doing a good deed with bad intentions.

Neither Yin Hui’s father-in-law nor Wei Luo harbored any resentment towards the Yin family, which relieved Yin Hui. However, the thought of her grandfather’s hard-earned family fortune being donated to her father-in-law fueled her hatred for Yin Wen.

Yin Yong smiled and said, “Aren’t you being foolish? If not for him, wouldn’t our family still have to donate money?”

Yin Hui pursed her lips, realizing that her father-in-law was short of money, and he might be unwilling to let the Yin family off the hook.

Yin Yong explained, “I have to donate no matter what. King Yan can’t openly ask us to donate. No matter how justified the reason, it would damage his reputation, and people would gossip if it spreads. Yin Wen’s incident just happened to be timely. We owe King Yan a favor, and by donating the money, we are making amends. The donation is justified, and King Yan’s acceptance is also justified—a win-win situation.”

The reason was simple, and Yin Hui, having been overly anxious before, now realized that she had overlooked the financial aspect, focusing only on concern for the old man. She inquired, “Supplying food to the army is not an easy task. Can you handle it?”

Yin Yong said with a smile, “I have been idle for more than a year and am eager to find something to do.”

At this time, Wei Luo changed his clothes and came out. Yin Yong gestured to his granddaughter, recognizing that his grandson-in-law had fought all night in the city last night, and was exhausted both physically and mentally.

how do you give an elderly man a labor intensive position??

being under the thumb of the government with these jobs seems like a worse trade than managing their own businesses and being able to travel where they want.
