Yin Hui had adorned herself with a peony flower to please not only herself but also Wei Luo. In any case, Wei Luo couldn’t help but consider buying food for both her and Xiao Heng, which made her feel a sense of connection that made her inclined to reward him. Moreover, with his impending departure for the battlefield, she felt a need to ensure his comfort.

While Yin Hui could advise her grandfather on altering the plan to visit the Kingdom of Jin, she refrained from mentioning it to Wei Luo due to the rapidly changing battlefield conditions. Besides the difficulty in explaining the situation, she feared that any alteration in tactics by her father-in-law might shift the entire course of the battle, risking their chances of victory.

Understanding the complexity of military affairs, Yin Hui decided not to involve herself in matters she didn’t fully comprehend. Instead, she focused on providing comfort to Wei Luo before his departure.

As the carriage traversed the city’s flat stone roads, the low curtains shielded the occupants from the outside world. Yin Hui, seemingly limp, leaned against Wei Luo, the once-prominent peony flower now resting on the couch after Wei Luo’s adjustments.

Only a month had passed. In a silent gesture, she extended her hand, causing Wei Luo’s body to freeze in response.

Feeling the need to clarify, Yin Hui leaned in and whispered into his ear, “Before a girl gets married, the family usually prepares a booklet to teach her about things. I’ve come across this information in one.”

His hand withdrew abruptly.

Yin Hui, acting out of sympathy and admiration for his courage in going to the battlefield, found herself taken aback by his lack of appreciation. Overcome with embarrassment, she retreated into a corner, busying herself with arranging her clothes while ignoring him.

On the opposite side of the carriage, Wei Luo silently calmed down, anticipating their return to the palace without any further complications.

The carriage halted outside the Donghua Gate of the palace. Wei Luo glanced at Yin Hui, relieved to see her acting as if nothing had transpired.

No formalities were needed with Princess Xu this time. Jinzhan delivered a package of meat buns and two sets of pastries from Taihe to Jinghao Hall. The couple proceeded directly back to Chengxin Hall.

Xiao Heng was absent, having ventured into the garden to play with his wet nurse—a recent favorite pastime for him, Si Lang, and Sister Zhuang.

Upon spotting the cakes on the table, Yinzhan inquired, “Madam, should I send someone to fetch Wu Lang back?”

Yin Hui replied, “Forget it. He’ll return when he’s had enough fun. Calling him back won’t be of any use if he hasn’t played enough.”

For children, indulging in playtime was paramount.

With that, Yin Hui headed to the inner room to wash her hands. Wei Luo followed suit, taking a seat on the edge of the bed, observing Mrs. Yin as she prepared to wash her hands. Her hands, delicate and fair like jade, possessed a slender elegance reminiscent of bamboo shoots.

After applying the balm, a process befitting a lady born in opulence, Yin Hui prepared to head out. Observing her intentions, Wei Luo frowned and said, “I have something to tell you.”

Reluctantly, Yin Hui approached, and bowed her head, discreetly stepping back.

“What do you want to say?” Yin Hui, annoyed by their earlier encounter in the carriage, stood with a cold demeanor.

Wei Luo intervened, saying, “Lower the curtain.”

Yin Hui glanced at him in disbelief.

Expressionless, Wei Luo responded, “Just put it down like you’re getting ready to sleep.”

Yin Hui hesitated but eventually lowered the curtain as instructed. Wei Luo took her hand from behind, guiding her to the bed where they sat together.

In this intimate setting, it felt reminiscent of their time in the carriage, except for Wei Luo holding onto Yin Hui’s hand.

Yin Hui remained still, and as soon as Wei Luo released her hand, she withdrew it.

Wei Luo repeated the action three times, but Yin Hui resisted cooperation.

“Don’t cause trouble,” Wei Luo’s voice grew hoarse, “It’s not appropriate to do this kind of thing in the carriage.”

Yin Hui snorted, “But I’m not in the mood right now.”

Wei Luo countered, “I’ll grant you one more wish.”

After a brief pause, Yin Hui half-compromised, “I just washed my hands.”

Wei Luo responded determinedly, “I’ll wash them for you. Wash your hands, and I’ll owe you another favor.”

Wei Luo gestured towards the window, signaling Yin Hui not to linger any longer.

Over a quarter of an hour later, Yin Hui lay comfortably on her side of the bed, observing Wei Luo arrange his clothes with his back turned. He fetched a basin of water and, upon his return, noticed Yin Hui’s exhausted and languid posture. Wei Luo reluctantly placed the basin on the ground, grabbed a low stool typically used by maids, sat down, and dampened a towel. He motioned for her to extend her hand so he could delicately wipe each finger.

In her two lifetimes, it was the first time Yin Hui witnessed such a gesture from him, and it brought her joy. She laughed and teased, “You’re truly flexible when it comes to finding moments of happiness.”

Wei Luo glanced at her, noting the blush on one side of her tired cheeks. Regardless of her actions, she always seemed to exude a coquettish charm that, instead of irritating him, only intensified his affection.

“Also, the balm—please apply it again for me. Otherwise, my hands will become rough, and I won’t be able to serve you in the future,” Yin Hui said playfully.

Wei Luo’s long eyelashes hid the subtle smile in his eyes as he complied.

With everything attended to, Yin Hui followed him out with satisfaction.

Subsequently, Wei Luo began to sleep in the backyard from time to time, a decision that left Yin Hui with a sense of regret. She really found herself a hard job to do.

Fast-forwarding to the end of April, preparations for the Dragon Boat Festival were underway in the palace when an urgent battle report arrived from the northern border town: the Kingdom of Jin was launching an attack with a force of one hundred thousand cavalry. Guo Xiao’s 100,000 army alone found it challenging to resist.
