Queen of flowers - Chapter 21
Yong Ruo glanced at him, waved at him, and motioned for him to come over. She said in his ear, “I’m making something to deal with the bad guys!”
She planned to do what the Red Army seniors did in Jinggangshan, and put a bamboo nail array under the root of the wall. She feared that someone would come in from the wall in the middle of the night to steal. The nails would help by keeping them away from jumping in the house.
Yong Qiao’s eyes were wide and round, staring at Yong Ruo with a look of surprise and worry, excitement and frightened, it swept away his usual youthful appearance, adding more to his childishness.
“Shh!” Yong Ruo put a finger in front of her lips and whispered, “Don’t say anything! You can only tell your mother and third brother quietly.”
“Will there be bad people who want to hurt us?” Yong Qiao asked in fear.
Yong Ruo was busy with her task in hand, and educated him on security precautions, “Not necessarily! Last night, your sister made a few silvers; today, we bought a lot of things and got many good things. Some people in this alley are poor. The poor are crazy, and maybe there are those shameless ones who steal at night. Of course, it may be that your sister thinks too much, and there is no danger. However, we cannot depend on luck. And since I think that someone may steal from us, we need to take precautions. It is better to be safe than sorry. Take precaution without waiting for the danger to arrive, and catch us unprepared and be slaughtered. Understand? “
Yong Qiao nodded as if he understood, and whispered, “Sister, let me help you!”
Yong Ruo smiled, “Okay!” And rubbed his little head.
As she was about to bury the bamboo peg or fence, she heard a knock on the door.
Yong Ruo asked Yong Qiao to hide the basket in the room and went to the gate of the courtyard. She slightly opened the door and peeped through the slit. Outside the door was Jin Sanbao’s mother, Jin Aunt.
Auntie Jin held a large earthen bowl in her hands. It contained scrambled egg soup. The bowl of soup was very clear, and there was a faint smell of rotten rice. It was too bad to say that it was a bowl of soup.
But the most important thing was that Mrs. Jin’s thumbnail was filled with black dirt, and it was soaked in the soup!
“My dear, our family made glutinous egg soup tonight. “Since your mother was sick, she should drink something nutritious, and so I brought this bowl of soup,” Jin Auntie said to Yong Ruo with a smile. She just wanted to run into the room.
Yong Ruo thought that Jin Auntie was really a wonderful person! When they starved, she never saw her give them anything. Who knew that when they got a lot of things, that Aunt would come to their house to give them egg soup.
She glanced at the bowl of egg soup that was so clear that it could be used as a mirror, thinking to herself, ‘How big a pot of soup does this lady cook with one egg? Is the egg in this bowl of soup enough for a quarter of an egg?’
“Wait a minute …” Yong Ruo said, holding back the muddy odor of Aunt Jin, and firmly blocked the door and shut her out, “You’re so kind, I’ve penned this kindness in my heart. But my mother now has an illness and can’t eat glutinous rice! Let’s take this soup back! “
The smile on Auntie Jin’s face froze, and she said, “Your mother is not fine, so let the brothers and sister eat!” she looked at Yong Ruo up and down, “Poor you, you’re as thin as a twine. When you get married, how will you raise a child!” She frowned anxiously.
Yong Ruo ignored her and smiled at her, “Madam, please wait. I have something for you.” After that, she closed the door and bolted.
She hurried back to the main room and wrapped two pieces of snacks in a clean line of straw paper.
Yong Qiao and Yong Miao were not very happy, “The old lady of the Jin family is too offensive! Why should my sister give her a snack?”
Yong Ruo casually said, “She is a neighbor, so the relationship can’t be too bad. When I need a favor, then I will ask for it.”
Her point was that there were several men in the Jin family, and they lived in the west neighbor. In case they needed them to help catch a thief that night!
Yong Miao shook his head and whispered, “I would rather go to ask Qin, rather than the old lady of the Jin family. How many years had it been since she hasn’t washed her clothes?”
Yong Ruo opened her mouth silently, holding back a smile, “I’m not letting her in, so you can’t smell her rinsed clothes!”
Aunt Jin was the mother-in-law who felt that “washing” clothes were a pain to her and only rinsed them. In that alley, Yong Ruo hadn’t found anyone who didn’t hate her.
At the gate, Yong Ruo opened the door again and gave the dessert to Auntie Jin, and smiled, “The nobleman today brought a few snacks. Auntie, you take two pieces back to try it!”
Auntie Jin looked at the paper bag. She was not satisfied, but she couldn’t help it, so she had to go with the soup bowl.
After sending out Aunt Jin, Yong Ruo returned to the main room. After thinking, she took out a few more pieces of clean paper, wrapped a few packets of dim sum. Then she called Yong Miao and sent them to a few neighbors that she knew well, saying it was for everyone to taste.
She added an extra piece of bacon to the pair of mother and son of the Qin family to thank them for taking care of their family.
After they gave the desserts, Yong Ruo closed the door. Seeing that Yong Qiao was not very happy, she enlightened him and told him not to be too careless, and then she pulled Yong Qiao to tie a fence and bury the bamboo nails.
If a thief came and sneaked in to steal things, it wouldn’t only keep them away; they would even leave her yard screaming in pain!

Interesting novel. Loving it so far. I’m enjoying it while working from home XD
Love2read
Yong Ruo is such a smart person. Frankly I am years older than her (both ancient and modern agew added together) but I would not have thought about safety precautions, maintaining neighbourliness, etc… 🤪
So glad I am learning so much from her!
