Make a Fortune and Become Well-off [90] - Chapter 3
Jiang Ning, being born in winter, was indeed only thirteen years old. Despite her youth, she deeply cared for her parents, making it challenging for her to resist her mother’s alternating tactics of harshness and tenderness.
It so happened that a former classmate of Jiang Ning’s from elementary school visited her home and spent the entire day there. This classmate revealed that she was working as a waiter elsewhere and earning at least 200 to 300 yuan per month. Those with a strong work ethic could potentially earn 500 to 600 yuan monthly.Â
Jiang Ning’s classmate offered to take her along to work.
Her mother heard about it and was greedy for the huge salary of two to three hundred a month. She begged her grandmother to convince her grandfather, begged her elementary school classmate to take her to work, and also asked the girl to take care of her.
She didn’t think much about it either. At that time, the monthly salary of urban workers was only 180 yuan. It seemed suspicious that a waiter could earn such a high salary—two to three hundred, or even five or six hundred yuan per month.
Father Jiang and Grandpa Jiang adamantly refused to let Jiang Ning go. However, Mother Jiang resorted to tears and agitation, creating a scene at home. She forcefully dragged Jiang Ning out of the house and pushed her onto a tricycle, disregarding the objections of the other family members.
She was so cowardly at that time, she didn’t know how to resist at all. So she was so frightened and confused that she was led by her elementary school classmate to work as a waitress.
It was indeed a real waiter’s job, albeit in a nightclub setting.
In such an environment, no matter how virtuous a girl may be, she would be easily influenced over time.
Jiang Ning was young and naive at the time, so when she witnessed the scene, she instinctively felt scared and sensed that something was amiss. Thus, she quietly slipped away while those around her were not paying attention.
It was her first time traveling far away. With less than two yuan in her pocket, she couldn’t afford a train ticket. Instead, she walked the entire way home along the train tracks, covering hundreds of kilometers. Along the journey, she begged and asked for help from passersby, often getting lost and encountering individuals who intentionally misled her. By the time she reached home, she resembled a beggar.
Even thinking about it made Jiang Ning scared. She was really young at that time and didn’t know anything. Daring to venture alone on the road was a risk she took, and she considered herself lucky to have made it home safely.
Even if faced with the same situation again, Jiang Ning wouldn’t dare to walk the same road.
It was truly a blessing from God that the teenage girl wasn’t abducted by human traffickers.
Recalling those gloomy days, Jiang Ning felt a wave of sadness wash over her.
She opened the door to her room. The wooden door creaked loudly, resembling something from a horror movie.
The room was separated from the kitchen and faced north, so only a faint glimmer of sunlight could filter through the narrow window in the evening.
As for her childhood room, it remained as dimly lit as ever. It seemed perpetually shrouded in darkness, with the only source of light being the faint glow filtering through the window covered with a transparent plastic bag.
In front of the window stood a makeshift wooden table constructed from bricks and an old wooden board. To keep it balanced, a stack of books belonging to Jiang Ning was piled high on both sides.
She flipped through the books on the desk, each one densely filled with notes. Almost every page was covered with notes. The homework books and notebooks scattered across the desk were also brimming with handwritten notes.
As she delved into these notebooks, it felt as though she was unlocking a trove of dusty memories. Forgotten knowledge gradually resurfaced with each page turned, becoming even clearer than before.
A smile spread across Jiang Ning’s face as she immersed herself in the nostalgia of her academic journey.
She stared at the notebooks for a long time, lost in thought, until she was abruptly struck on the back of her head. The force propelled her forward, causing her upper body to collide with the table. Before she could react, her ponytail was yanked, and another blow landed across her face. Curses followed, “I thought you died outside. How dare you come back? Don’t you like to run away? If you run again, let me see where you go. You little thing, you dare to oppose me?! I have worked so hard for you to study, but you are still like this. The book has gone into the dog’s belly and you still want to read.”
As she spoke, she slapped her again with several forceful blows.
Jiang Ning was stunned.
Mother Jiang, accustomed to farm work year-round, possessed formidable strength. She seized Jiang Ning’s hair as though handling a chicken, rendering her unable to break free.
Initially, Jiang Ning believed she was dreaming, yet the vividness of the pain and humiliation shattered that illusion.
She was no longer the little girl who was submissive and didn’t dare to fight back even after being beaten several times. Even though she was so thin that she had nowhere to escape, the suppressed anger and humiliation in her heart made her want to fight Mother Jiang. The hand holding her braid slammed into Mother Jiang’s arm, knocked her onto the table, and grabbed the sickle she placed on her desk.
Mother Jiang was hurt by her impact. She subconsciously loosened her hand, but did not let go completely. She slid from the root of her hair to the middle of her hair but still held it tightly. Seeing that she dared to take the knife, she became furious. “You dare to grab it? Your audacity knows no bounds! What do you plan to do with that knife? Are you trying to kill me?”
Jiang Ning seized the sickle and delivered a decisive slash, cutting through her hair from bottom to top with force. The blade severed the hair along with Mother Jiang’s grip, freeing Jiang Ning from her grasp.

I do like that little Ning’er is not going to be passive.
(I’m not sure if I used the correct diminutive)
