I am the crown prince? - Chapter 18
The empress felt mad. She tolerated her first born too much for her liking, covering for him and taking the blame with an open heart. She lost the emperor’s trust because of him. She didn’t know why he was that greedy with the idea of sitting on the throne to a degree of obsession.
“You are a fool! I tried to convince the emperor to send him away for a long time, and now when he did, look what you have done! He’s blaming me for his death!” the empress shouted.
“Even the walls have ears, lower your voice!” Zheng Wei hissed in annoyance.
“You! Don’t ever talk to me that way! I am your empress,” she scolded him.
“And I am, the future emperor!” he fired back with a challenging smirk.
The first prince wanted to sit on the throne, and he didn’t care for anything else. To him, getting rid of the young prince was his first step to the throne. The prophecy, he hated that prophecy with passion. The young prince was a threat to his reign as he needed to get rid of him.
“I am your Mother!” she exclaimed.
“I am leaving,” he coldly ignored her and left, not before he saw his brothers in the doorway eavesdropping.
“If you say something like that again to the empress, don’t blame anyone but yourself,” the second prince warned as he bumped his shoulder with his older brother’s, rushing to his mother’s side.
“Are you alright?” Zheng Min asked his mother in concern.
“I…I,” she couldn’t finish her word as he hugged her, trying to comfort her.
“Mom you spoil him too much!” Zheng Chang puffed his cheeks, looking at his twin in jealousy.
“You rascal! Come here,” she invited him, laughing in delight.
The empress felt better when her two sons hugged her. At least she has children that loved her, that all what mattered.
Early in the morning, Li Jie woke up to deliver the letter that his master wrote. He couldn’t sleep at all; the black circles were evident under his eyes, indicating his lack of sleep.
He tried not to make a noise as he quietly walked into the old man’s room. He found his master snoring without a care in the world, making him feel jealous.
Li Jie ignored his inner thought and took the letter that was laid on the table and left the cottage in a hurry. He prayed to the sky for a peaceful journey.
When he reached the village, he carefully walked around looking for the person that he was supposed to give him the letter. After a while, he spotted him near a tree and went his way.
“Li Jie! How can I help you?” a tan man that wore worn clothes asked.
“Master told you to take care of this,” Li Jie replied, giving him the letter. The man examined the letter thoughtfully, and then took it from the young man’s hand.
“I will take care of it you can go,” the man said. Li Jie sighed in relief after he got rid of the burden.
The man who took the letter secured it inside his clothes and disappeared from view. He arrived near a forbidden ally and pushed a tile, making a door appear in front of him.
“Boss Yo!” a person that wore a robe with a royal seal called.
“I was about to go meet you!” Yo told him, his luck seemed pretty good.
“Leave whatever you are about to say aside! I need you to find the young prince. The emperor can’t rest without seeing him, dead or alive,” He said.
“Well, I already have a clue of where he is. Take this and give it to the emperor! Don’t open it! ” Yo stated, giving him the letter.
“You mean this letter contains information about the young prince?” he asked in surprise, finding the prince was faster than he thought it would take them.
“Yes!” Yo nodded.
Li Jie went to the market to eat in a fancy restaurant after saving money for it. He was walking around when he spotted a scout of guards getting out from the restaurant itself. The fat guard patted his stomach in satisfaction.
Li Jie felt like someone has cursed him with bad luck when the fat guy saw him. The fat guy didn’t lose any moment and started to shout for the guards to catch him, making the young man ran as his life depended on it.
“Criminal in the loose! Move! Move!” Li Jie heard the fat man shout, he felt like beating the crap out of him. He was going to end up eating rice again, eating it on lunch and dinner was enough for him. He worked hard to gain money so he can eat Tofu and drink tea once in a while. If he only depended on the old man, he would have become a rice ball.
Li Jie Pushed people aside to pass, and without warning, he bumped into a guy who wore a mask and lost balance.
“Catch him!” the fat man yelled from afar when he saw the young man fall.
The masked guy stared at the one who fell coldly, without moving from his spot. Chills started to gather in Li Jie’s heart as the aura around the man was so strong that he couldn’t move. The man tried to reduce his killing intent when he noticed that and gave his hand to the young man to help him stand up. But the young man didn’t move as he ignored the hand.
“You need to get away fast, or they will catch you,” The man stated coldly, giving the young man his back. The scene before him was a familiar one as he was in that spot a few years back.
He remembered his childhood, that he lived without a family, alone and homeless, a kid who’s looking for a way to survive. He stole to eat, and he caused trouble wherever he went, but that was normal for a kid. When he got arrested, his life changed for the worst. He didn’t get punished as he expected. Instead, they took him under their wings and trained him as an assassin. He worked under a secret organization created by the minister of justice in secret, even the emperor himself didn’t know about it.
He recalled the first lesson in the organization which was getting rid of emotions. It was hard for him to get rid of it. His master got annoyed by time and decided to torture him himself till he becomes broken. Since then he became indifferent.
He won’t lie and say he didn’t feel sad for killing kids and yes he felt sad for the young prince’s death. After all, the young prince was only a child. He wasn’t the one who killed him, but still, he didn’t try to save him either.
Wow what’s the assassin’s role in the story! I wonder!
