Demon King's Repayment - chapter 8
Yu Yao held Yuan Xiang in one hand and an umbrella in the other. The umbrella mostly covered the heads of his wife and little apprentice so most of his body was soaked. The three of them walked along the gravel road in the courtyard.
The garden had unevenly grown flowers and different colored plants which were neither trimmed nor carved, looking a bit wild and messy. The most conspicuous one was a sycamore tree, its branches surging up to the sky and covered like a pavilion.
A soft voice came through the dense branches and leaves: “What kind of apprentice is it?! Turns out it’s just a malnourished girl. Was it worth taking a trip for this?”
Yuan Xiang stretched out her head and looked up from the edge of the umbrella. There was a humanoid creature on the sturdy branches of the sycamore tree. It had an androgynous human face and its eyelids were painted with a rich rouge red. The crimson crown on his head had two long red hood scarves hanging down from its white cheeks that swayed gently in the green branches and leaves. There were pure white feathers on his arms which he rested on his chest and long pure white feathers hanging down from the branches behind him.
“This is Shi Shiran, my apostle.” Yu Yao introduced Yuan Xiang.
As they passed through the courtyard, a circle of eaves encircled the house, with paper windows and wooden couches, which were simple and elegant entered their sight. Yu Yao took Yun Niang and Yuan Xiang to the porch, stood on it, then shook off the rain from the umbrella.
Yun Niang didn’t have any extra words. Shi Shiran walked through the long corridor, entered a room to the south, and disappeared.
A horned head appeared on the ground beside Yuan Xiang’s feet, startling her. A deep voice rang from under the wooden floor of the porch, “Such a little doll could also practice Sir’s secret art? I don’t think she’s even big enough for me to eat.”
“This is Xiqu. He has a bad temper,” Yu Yao introduced with a smile, “but they’re all great. When they’re at home, even if I’m not there, you can play at ease without fearing anything. “
They were the ones who scared me, right? Yuan Xiang looked at Xiqu’s fierce and wicked appearance, slandering him in her heart.
“What did the apostle mean?” She asked without understanding.
“I’m waiting for the cultivators to subdue the demons with magic techniques. If I don’t want to kill them, I could make a bond with them with secret techniques. I think they were just lackeys, hence the name Apostle.”
“It turns out you can do this. Can Shifu teach me this? I also want an apostle.” Yuan Xiang was excited, thinking what if she could control a group of fairies to protect and run errands for her in the future. Wouldn’t that be great?
So she pulled Yu Yao’s sleeve, wishing to immediately learn the technique to capture a little sprite as an apostle.
“Of course I can teach you,” Yu Yao knelt down and touched her head, “But this is not so easy. If you want to get the first apostle, you have to wait at least till you become a Taoist.”
Since then, Yuan Xiang had lived in the small courtyard and started her own path of practice.
Yu Yao himself had learned a lot of wide range of subjects. Whether it was Feng Shui, talisman (Fu Lu) incantation, Taoist incantations and magic symbols (written or painted), charm talisman, Da Liu Ren (calendrical astrology), he had mastered 13 subjects.
But Yuan Xiang discovered the biggest problem. She didn’t know how to read, or just the traditional Chinese characters of the era. Each word could still be understandable. But it was impossible to read through those difficult classics fluently.
Shifu Yu Yao was very knowledgeable in art and mathematics. He could use his own understanding when giving lectures, speaking wittily and telling vivid theories that made it easy to understand. But the strange thing was that he knew nothing about simple childhood education.
Yu Yao read a book of “Thousand Characters Classic” on the stone table in the courtyard for a long time, stuttering and reading: “Heaven and Earth, Dark and Yellow; the universe is vast and diffuse…”
“The meaning of this heaven and earth dark and yellow is…what is it?” He scratched his head.
“The sky is black, the ground is yellow and the universe is vast and boundless.” Yuan Xiang learned these two famous lines in middle school.
“Yes, yes, that’s what it means.” Yu Yao nodded happily and then pointed to the next few sentences and asked Yuan Xiang, “Extra days complete the year; what does tuning harmonizes the yin and yang mean?”
Yuan Xiang shook her head. It was too difficult for a student of science and engineering.
So the Shifu and apprentice pair, who started the difficult road of cultivation, were blocked in the first step by literature.
“Human Chinese characters are really too difficult.” Yu Yao whispered.
Shi Shiran’s head poked from the tree trunk and his crimson crown hung down in front of the page: “Human magic is very powerful but they seem to be deliberately trying to make this kind of thing incomprehensible, so as not to let their own people learn it easily. It’s a very selfish race.”
Xiqu’s low voice sounded from the ground: “I think they are guarding themselves from us, the demon race, and are afraid that we will practice their secret skills. Otherwise, their delicate fleshy body can only serve as our demon’s food. “
“Anyway, I can’t understand these things. Only… can understand.”
The last murmur of Xiqu, Yuan Xiang did not hear clearly, as at the time, the figure of Shi Niang rarely appeared in the shadow of the veranda.
“Let me teach you.” Yun Niang said lightly, holding her sleeves.
