Crying While Filling the Pit I Dug - Chapter 89
The promotional event this time wasn’t particularly significant; it was primarily because Xu Nanfang had accepted an endorsement deal for men’s clothing, coinciding with the promotion of his film. Given the nature of the endorsement and the film’s content, Xu Nanfang naturally became the spokesperson. Most of the characters in the movie were male, with only one actress portraying Yu Ang’s girlfriend. Consequently, the organizers had no intention of inviting other male actors or actresses.
Song Miaomiao’s role in the film was relatively minor, but she was there thanks to Meng Jiangye’s efforts. Knowing what she wanted, Meng Jiangye ensured that Song Miaomiao participated in any activities or scenes involving Xu Nanfang.
Breaking the silence, Xu Nanfang inquired, “Miss Fang, are you finding the latest scenes challenging?”
Song Miaomiao, having consumed two cups of mixed black coffee upon arrival, replied, “Fortunately, I’ve been using the method you taught me to imitate characters during this time. Although it’s been helpful, I do get headaches if I imitate too much.”
“Stand on your head,” Xu Nanfang suggested succinctly.
“Stand on my head?” Song Miaomiao asked.
Xu Nanfang elaborated, “Yes, standing upside down for a minute or 30 seconds can quickly relieve headache symptoms.”
“Thank you. I’ll give it a try when I get the chance,” Song Miaomiao replied, though it wasn’t convenient to attempt it in the skirt she was wearing at the moment.
Xu Nanfang smiled faintly, then picked up the water glass in front of him and took a sip.
At that moment, the makeup artist arrived. After applying the lipstick for Song Miaomiao and styling Xu Nanfang’s hair, the event was nearly ready to commence.
The men’s clothing platform was the first agenda item, followed by the announcement of the “Record” release date, and finally, a period of free media interviews. Naturally, the media’s interest lay more in Xu Nanfang’s new drama and personal life than in the men’s clothing brand. As for Song Miaomiao, standing next to someone as prominent as Xu Nanfang, the reporters lacked any inclination to pursue her.
During this period, Xu Nanfang’s manager, Sister Zheng, also attended the event to preemptively address any challenging questions from the media.
However, Song Miaomiao’s agent, Meng Jiangye, was notably absent. In truth, Meng Jiangye didn’t invest much attention in Song Miaomiao’s personal life. Aside from providing resource support, he rarely visited her on set. Several factors contributed to this. Firstly, Song Miaomiao’s level of popularity was relatively modest, with only a few films and just two broadcasts under her belt. In the entertainment industry, her presence could be likened to a small ripple. As long as actors had new projects to maintain a semblance of popularity, they would swiftly fade from the public eye, escaping the scrutiny of paparazzi and gossip columns.
Secondly, Song Miaomiao kept a low profile, seldom venturing outside of filming commitments. Her demeanor was generally reserved, with her sole enthusiasm directed towards Xu Nanfang. Consequently, she had little to worry about in terms of negative publicity or rumors.
Lastly, Meng Jiangye had his hands full managing new talents recruited by the company. With a mix of fresh faces, both male and female, under his purview, he took upon himself the responsibilities of nurturing their careers alongside his other duties.
Moreover, the fourth reason for Meng Jiangye’s absence was to meet with the producer and discuss plans for Song Miaomiao.
Though Xu Nanfang’s manager couldn’t entirely control the media’s inquiries, she sought to direct the conversation towards work-related topics during interactions with reporters. Initially, the questions revolved around Xu Nanfang’s work.
Reporter: “Mr. Xu, your upcoming film ‘Record’ is generating excitement. Can you introduce us to the character of Yu Ang?”
Xu Nanfang responded earnestly, “Yu Ang is a reporter, and the narrative delves into his journey of pursuing truth and presenting facts to the public.”
Reporter: “What motivated you to take on this role?”
Xu Nan answered, “The character, the team, and the director were all factors.”
Reporter: “Who was your favorite collaborator on this project?”
Here came the tricky question.
Xu Nanfang smiled, “The director.”
Reporter: “And what about your fellow actors? For instance, Zeng Jiayuan played your girlfriend in the film. Did you develop any special bond with her during filming?”
Zeng Jiayuan portrayed Yu Ang’s girlfriend in “Record”. Given the story’s focus on Yu Ang’s personal journey and experiences, female characters were limited. Zeng Jiayuan actually made a cameo appearance, though the crew labeled it as a special appearance.
Xu Nanfang remarked, “I find her to be a highly dedicated and talented actress. Everyone in our crew displayed great dedication, including Miss Fang here beside me.”
Song Miaomiao hadn’t anticipated Xu Nanfang would steer the conversation toward her. Despite standing there for quite some time, the reporters seemed to overlook her entirely. While she had faced interviews before, they usually included some symbolic questions during group sessions with the crew, but never with Xu Nanfang by her side. His star power seemed to cover her presence entirely.
Moreover, she had no desire for attention, preferring instead to listen to Xu Nanfang speak.
Reporter: “Aside from professional evaluations, do you have any personal evaluation of Ms. Fang?”
Logically, one might have expected Xu Nanfang to offer a polite remark about Song Miaomiao’s pleasant demeanor, brushing off the reporter’s attempt to delve into deeper matters. However, instead of speaking, Xu Nanfang merely smiled at Song Miaomiao in silence.
This silence intrigued everyone. Even Xu Nanfang’s manager, Sister Zheng, couldn’t help but glance at him, prompting the reporters to press on with their questioning.
Sensing the shift, the reporter directed the microphone towards Song Miaomiao for the first time, asking, “How does Miss Fang feel about Mr. Xu?”
Song Miaomiao responded simply, “He is a serious person.”
Then, the reporter attempted to turn the attention back to Xu Nanfang, but his manager blocked each attempt.
After the event, Xu Nanfang had to attend to other commitments, leaving no opportunity for Song Miaomiao to spend time with him, even if she had wanted to.
Upon returning to the set, the first thing she did was attempt the handstand Xu Nanfang had suggested. As her blood rushed to her head, she felt genuinely refreshed.
Later that evening, she received another call from Meng Jiangye, informing her that a new movie script had arrived and instructing her assistant to collect it from the company the next day.
The most thrilling news was that the producer of this script had already secured Xu Nanfang as the male lead, although there had been no official announcement yet.
