Crying While Filling the Pit I Dug - Chapter 114
After what seemed like an eternity in the darkness, Song Miaomiao began to hear faint voices.
“How’s the patient in bed 21 doing today?” A voice asked.
“The patient was brought in three days ago after a car accident. She suffered a severe brain injury. Her vital signs are stable, but she remains in a coma. We anticipate she’ll regain consciousness in about two days,” another voice replied.
…
Song Miaomiao didn’t fully grasp the conversation; she merely sensed her heavy eyelids and head, drifting back into sleep for an indefinite period. One morning, the sweet chirping of birds outside reached her ears.
As she opened her eyes, she found herself surrounded by white curtains bearing the words “XX Hospital”, still feeling dazed.
“Are you awake?” A man’s voice broke through the haze.
She turned her head slightly. “You…?”
The man reached for the calling bell beside the bed. “Song Miaomiao, don’t you recognize me? I’m Meng Xun, your high school classmate.”
How could she forget him? Memories from several worlds intertwined. Across countless worlds, she knew him, loved him, and they’d been together. Returning to the real world, her mind was still foggy.
Several doctors and nurses entered the ward, conducting a thorough examination to ensure no further complications. Afterward, they instructed Meng Xun on post-coma care and transferred Song Miaomiao from the ICU to a general ward.
Despite the passage of multiple worlds, Song Miaomiao remained bewildered. “What happened to me?”
As Meng Xun peeled an apple for her, he explained, “You were in a car accident and fell into a coma for four days.”
“Did you bring me to the hospital?” She asked.
“Yes,” Meng Xun replied. “I happened to be passing by and saw you at the accident scene. It’s been years, but you looked exactly the same. I recognized you immediately.”
“Thank you for saving me,” Song Miaomiao expressed her gratitude.
Meng Xun chuckled, “Thank you? Don’t be so formal. Not only do you look the same as before, but you also have the same temperament as a few years ago. You used to keep to yourself.”
Song Miaomiao blinked. “Was I like this before?”
Meng Xun sliced the apple into small pieces, arranged them on a plate, and handed her a piece with a toothpick. Seeing that her hand was still constrained by the IV drip, he hesitated for a moment before offering the apple to her lips.
Song Miaomiao opened her mouth and accepted the apple without hesitation.
Meng Xun smiled. “I thought you wouldn’t eat, but it seems I was mistaken. You’re different now, not as distant as before.”
Song Miaomiao was puzzled. “Distant?”
Meng Xun nodded. “I wanted to talk to you back then, but you never seemed interested. You always kept your distance.”
Song Miaomiao shook her head. “No.”
How could she not want to talk to him? She liked him so much that even the protagonist in her own stories carried his essence.
Meng Xun fed her another piece of apple and smiled gently. “Isn’t it?”
Song Miaomiao opened her mouth to eat the apple again, shaking her head softly. “It’s not that I didn’t want to talk to you. I just didn’t know how to. You know I’m an orphan, right? My reluctance to open up made me realize years later that I had missed out on a lot.”
She had grown up without a mother’s love, and even when she found an adoptive family, they remained indifferent to her. Despite her overflowing love for them, they kept her at arm’s length, leaving her heart once again in the cold.
So, despite the warmth and drama bubbling within her, on the surface, she became increasingly distant and unwilling to expect anything from the world. She always felt like the world would shut her out, and even though she liked him, she couldn’t bring herself to speak up. She had desires but was too afraid to fight for them, too afraid to believe in the world.
She thought maybe this flaw in her character led to the tragedy in the first world and the misunderstandings in the other one. She couldn’t accept him wholeheartedly or believe that he could fall in love with her.
Fortunately, through the experiences of these worlds, her heart gradually changed, from passivity to determination, with him by her side.
After a moment of silence, Meng Xun met her gaze and said, “A few years ago, I never imagined I’d be listening to you talk about yourself like this. You don’t have to regret it now. Some things may have been missed in the past, but you’ll encounter different scenery ahead.”
Song Miaomiao nodded. “Yes, I hope this time I can make up for lost time, no, not just hope.” She smiled warmly. “I believe I will catch up.”
She glanced at the plate in Meng Xun’s hand, feeling grateful for his kindness and care. She had been heartless, foolish, and closed off before. If only she had been as brave as she was in the third world, things might have turned out differently. But dwelling on ‘what if’ was pointless now. Just as she wasn’t afraid that Han Chuan might forget her, she wasn’t afraid to start anew with Meng Xun.
Meng Xun smirked, lifting the corner of his mouth. “Are you feeling very confident now?”
Song Miaomiao smiled back. “Yes.”
Meng Xun fed her another bite of apple, his curiosity piqued. “Can you tell me what you’ve been up to all these years we haven’t seen each other? What caused such a significant change in you, and what have I missed?”
Song Miaomiao furrowed her brows in contemplation. “I… These years, I’ve been filling in the gaps in my unfinished novels. The catalyst for my change was the male lead in my novel worlds. It’s my own stories that have healed me. And don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything.”
Even if he did miss something, she’ll spend her whole life with him, watching flowers bloom and wither, and clouds drift by.
Impressed, Meng Xun praised her, “Wow, you’re truly talented. You’re the only person I know who writes novels. I’m eager to read your stories now.”
Song Miaomiao requested, “Could you lend me your phone? I want to log in to my account and take a look. Although I’ve been busy filling in the gaps in my novels, I’ve never revisited the website.”
She didn’t know what kind of content had been automatically recorded by the Lujiang codeword machine, or what events had occurred in places she was unaware of.
Meng Xun handed over his phone with a smile. “Miaomiao, will you be with me?”
Tears welled up in Song Miaomiao’s eyes. “Yes.”
Seeing her tears, he quickly wiped them away. “Don’t cry, I’m here.”
