To make He Yu regret - chapter 20
Xu Meiyin chose not to be evasive anymore and talked about the misfortune with her daughter. But Jiang Mingzhen’s understanding of death was quite simple. Death was far away from her young parents, farther away from her, as far as if it would never come.
Her mother let out a breath and leaned back in the chair.
“He just won’t come back.”
Jiang Mingzhen was silent. She thought silently of the notion, he would never come back.
“After his father was gone, He Yu slept very restlessly every night. Don’t you know it well? He always had nightmares at night. Aunt Fan said that when He Yu’s father had an accident, He Yu was also at the construction site. The child was very pitiful…”
“So,” Jiang Mingzhen remembered, “He always calls ‘Dad’, when he has nightmares. Does he miss his father very much?”
“Yes. You came to me and dad before, and said that He Yu sleeps with Aunt Fan. But you, who are of the same age as He Yu, sleep in a seperate room from us. You can sleep like a pig in your own room. But, Xiaozhen, you can sleep peacefully because you know that your home is safe, and your parents will protect you no matter what happens. And He Yu? This is not his home, his father is gone.”
Xu Meiyin spoke softly every word, but Jiang Mingzhen’s head was lowered. She remembered He Yu’s face paled by nightmares, and an indescribable sadness arose in her heart.
“Xiaozhen, I hope you can listen to what I said today. In the future, you should know how to cherish and respect He Yu. You are the master in our house. The identity of the master is not to bully others. You should be polite to He Yu and give priority to his feelings.”
Xu Meiyin’s words were more profound, but Jiang Mingzhen thought she understood it. She nodded to her mother, very hard. Jiang Mingzhen intended to apologize to He Yu. Ever since the little princess was born, she had apologized only a handful of times. The last time she apologized was to her mother.
After watching a prank scene in the movie, Jiang Mingzhen thought it was fun, so she experimented on her mother. One day the family of three went out shopping. Under the crowd, Jiang Mingzhen slid beside her mother and lifted her mother’s skirt up… How could a respectful lady like Xu Meiyin ever be so ugly outside? The culprit was her own daughter. She was angry and didn’t let it go. After they returned home, she hid in the room and cried. Jiang Mingzhen admitted to her mistake and apologized. She stretched out her hand, and was beaten ten times by her mother. That was the last time.
“If you know your mistakes, you can correct it. He is still a good boy.” The adults taught her.
Jiang Mingzhen thought, if she corrected her mistakes, she can be with He Yu, as happy as before. On the second day of her mother’s scolding, Jiang Mingzhen asked Xu Meiyin to take her to the department store. She carefully selected a box of brand new markers, 72 colors.
Jiang Mingzhen insisted on the best packaging, to show her sincerity in apologizing. She picked up a box of markers of the size of their school bag, and the rows of bright colors looked quite magnificent.
After they bought the markers, Jiang Mingzhen held on to it for a full week to give them. For a week, He Yu didn’t speak to her, whether at home or at school. At home, He Yu closed himself in that small nanny room. But in the school…he only had her as his playmate in the school, and she was also his deskmate. He didn’t talk to Jiang Mingzhen, even Jiang Mingzhen couldn’t think of who he could talk to. Unless the teacher asked questions in class or Aunt Fan talked to him, or anyone from the Jiang family, He Yu didn’t speak in other than those cases.
In Jiang Mingzhen’s eyes, he seemed to have not spoken to anyone for a whole week.
He used to draw when he was bored and alone. Without his marker, He Yu didn’t even draw.
He observed the world silently, like a wooden man without a mouth. Jiang Mingzhen dragged the “apology”, and the more she dragged it, the more difficult it became to speak, especially to He Yu’s expressionless face. As per her past behaviour, she might make things difficult for He Yu and make him have to talk to her first, for example, deliberately knocking his chair away; deliberately taking his things away, and if he didn’t beg her, she wouldn’t return his things.
However, she knew she did something wrong this time. She felt guilty in her heart. Looking at He Yu, who was alone, she felt even more pitiful for him. So she was embarrassed and cautious about her getting along with him.
