To make He Yu regret - Chapter 1
☆ Niuniu’s troubles
Niuniu was very troubled, super invincible and extremely upset. The adult said amused: “How could a six-year-old child have troubles?”
Of course a six-year-old child could be troubled! Niuniu’s grandfather had a stroke a year ago. As for the word stroke, Niuniu heard it from her mother. She used to think that it was a kind of a style when playing mahjong. Her grandma liked playing mahjong most. Every time she played a card, she would shout out loudly.
“East wind! North wind! One block!”
But the stroke obviously had nothing to do with playing mahjong, because she knew that grandma didn’t like grandpa’s stroke. After grandpa had a stroke, half of his body couldn’t move, so grandma had to take care of grandpa every day. After dinner every night, her grandma’s former friends passed by their door and went to play mahjong under the big tree at the entrance of the alley. At that time, Niuniu would find envy in her grandma’s eyes.
‘Envy’, Niuniu knew what it was. It was how she felt when her mother didn’t let her eat candy saying she would get a tooth decay, but then she could only watch her mother eat all her candies.
Having said that, Niuniu’s troubles were not of grandpa’s stroke.
It was Grandpa’s stroke. What does she have to worry about it? Grandpa ate and lived well every day, and he didn’t have to get up early to go to school like she did. And he even had her grandma to accompany him. He used to be very jealous of her grandma playing mahjong with others, and often complained that she spent too little time by his side.
But Niuniu’s troubles were inextricably linked to grandpa’s stroke. As grandpa needed grandma, grandma was solely responsible for his diet and daily life, as well as helping him with his recovery efforts… She couldn’t spare time to play with Niuniu. Niuniu could only play with Ah Xin from the neighbor’s house. Ah Xin was one year younger than her. Niuniu used to disdain playing with him when she was in middle school. Ah Xin liked crying very much. Niuniu tied his braids, he cried, Niuniu drew his nails and he cried. In the words of an adult, Niuniu thought Ah Xin was very immature.
He was five years old. Why did he cry so much? Her grandfather never recovered from the ‘stroke’. Niuniu was so bored every day that she had to play with Ah Xin all the time. Just playing around like that, Niuniu discovered recently that the way Ah Xin cried was no longer annoying to her. She was accustomed to the little ducklings, which quacked suddenly and sharply. So when he cried, she could stare at his crying face calmly. Looking at it, Niuniu found that Ah Xin’s eyelashes were long, and after soaking in water, they looked distinct and shiny.
He cried so hard, his cheeks became red, like a red apple, the kind that would be sweet after a bite. Niuniu thought so, so she bit…No, she kissed him.
Then came Niuniu’s troubles. Ah Xin’s cry stopped abruptly. His eyes widened unimaginably. After a daze for three seconds, the red of his cheek spread to the base of his ears. Niuniu licked her lips with her tongue. There was no sweetness.
“I’m going to marry Niuniu!” Ah Xin said while covering his face. It was a very serious matter for her. Mother married father, grandma married grandpa, Niuniu … could only marry one person.
She was considering marrying either Haohao and Xiaozhuang, both of whom she met in kindergarten. Haohao played football very well and had a sunny smile. The children say he was the most handsome boy in their kindergarten. At the same desk, Xiao Zhuang would share half of his afternoon snacks and tie her shoelaces, if she married him, she could hide from her mother every day and eat half of the snacks.
Now there was a Xin. She honestly felt the red apple on his face was quite cute. Niuniu was so embarrassed. Who should she marry when she grows up, because she likes all three people!
She got sad and frowned.
The next day in the kindergarten, Niuniu couldn’t take away Xiaozhuang’s biscuits comfortably, when she went to the playground, Niuniu couldn’t respond to Haohao’s sunny smile, she didn’t even dare to go to Ah Xin’s house when she came back home from school. Ah Xin’s words “marriage” kept echoing in her mind.
If she accepted the kindness of one person but married another person, won’t she be a bad woman? Like the bad lady TV series. The man next to the bad woman would meet the good woman, and then the bad woman would be abandoned. After the abandonment, her life would be very unsatisfactory. The unsatisfactory life made her do bad things. After doing bad things, she was caught by the police.
If Niuniu was caught doing bad things, her mother would not buy her a hamburger to eat, and she would not be able to eat the braised pork made by her grandma. Niuniu didn’t want to be a bad woman! In the middle of the night, her grandma cleaned the urinals and came out of the toilet. She saw her six-year-old granddaughter sitting in the unlit dining room and sighed.
“Niuniu?” Grandma stared at Niuniu, who was confused, “Hungry? You haven’t eaten enough for dinner?”
Niuniu shook her head painfully and said to herself in her heart, “No, I already have deeper troubles.”
Grandma asked tentatively, “May I cook some noodles for you? Chicken and mushroom soup base?”
“I want eggs added too!” She replied.
Slowly, swallowing the delicious chicken soup, Niuniu decided to talk to her favorite grandma about her troubles.
“Grandma, why did you marry grandpa?”
Each of the three boys had their own advantages. But if the marriage was such a serious matter, what was the most important point? Niuniu thought her grandma would say the same sentence as her mother said. When she asked her, her mother answered “honesty”- her mother liked her father’s honest and cute character.
But, grandma left a baffling sentence to Niuniu without thinking.
“To make He Yu regret it,” she said.
Niuniu didn’t understand at all, “What do you mean?”
“Haha, what do I mean…” She didn’t know what grandma was thinking, grandma covered her mouth and laughed to herself, “It’s a very long story.”
“I want to listen.”
“Then let’s go to bed, and I will tell you in your room.”
The old woman and the little girl walked into the room quietly. Turning on the bedside lamp, grandma’s warm hand tucked Ye Niuniu’s quilt. Under the warm yellow light, her expression became very different from usual. Her expression looked very soft. It was as soft as a blanket in cold winter, and a large white wool blanket covered her.
In such warmth, Niuniu heard her grandma say in a soft voice.
“When I met He Yu, I was younger than you. I was five years old that year.”
Niuniu was surprised, “Was grandma five years old too?”
“Yes,” Grandma smiled, “Little fool, everyone has a childhood.”
Miao:
East wind, North wind, One block: tiles in mahjong
Ah: before a man or woman’s name was, and still is, a common way of creating a nickname, meaning something like “dude” or “pal.
instead of “ah” it’s quite often “xiao” (小,little) that gets added to someone’s name to make it a familiar nickname for that person
