The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 79
Little Wu Zhen, held by Mei Zhuyu, looked around the yard and suddenly pouted, “It’s not pretty without flowers!”
Her tone was full of disdain. Mei Zhuyu had actually been worried that Wu Zhen would dislike the fact that his house didn’t have a variety of beautiful flowers, which couldn’t compare to the scenery of Duke Yu’s Mansion, where flowers bloomed all year round. But later, when he mentioned it unintentionally, Wu Zhen had been very generous and waved her hand dismissively, saying that this courtyard was elegant and unique, full of greenery, and that she liked it very much, so there was no need to bother planting more flowers.
Since she said so, Mei Zhuyu believed her and no longer felt the need to plant flowers in the yard.
Looking at the girl’s undisguised disdain now, Mei Zhuyu thought, so what Wu Zhen said before was all a lie. Did she actually dislike the fact that there were no beautiful flowers planted here?
Little Wu Zhen had no idea that she had completely betrayed her true feelings. She was still waving her little finger, pointing here and there, saying, “Plant a few peonies, and hibiscus over there. If you need flowers with fragrance, gardenias and jasmine will do. Isn’t there an empty space over there? Plant two crabapple trees…”
Mei Zhuyu listened to her clear and logical suggestions and secretly noted them in his mind.
After walking around the courtyard, the little girl’s eyes moved again, and she suddenly pointed at the wall and said, “This wall doesn’t look much taller than you. Go over and compare it~”
Mei Zhuyu walked to the bottom of the wall, and the little girl said, “Look, it’s really not much taller than you. You are so tall, taller than my dad! My dad can jump onto the wall of my house in one go. Can you do that?”
The little girl’s eyes sparkled with curiosity, so Mei Zhuyu, without much hesitation, held her and jumped onto the wall. The little girl covered her mouth and giggled, lowering her voice to exclaim, “You are so amazing! You jumped up so high in such a short time! It’s so high—if you jump over here, can you jump down? Are you scared?”
Under the girl’s enthusiastic praise, Mei Zhuyu jumped down from the wall and landed on the street outside the house. The girl continued to praise him, “Then let’s go over there next!” She pointed to a corner with her chubby little hand.
At that moment, Mei Zhuyu suddenly came to his senses and realized that he had just been tricked out of the yard by the little girl. He had only agreed to take her out to look around the yard, not to leave it altogether.
So, Mei Zhuyu stood silently for a moment at the foot of the wall, pondering how he had just been swayed by the little girl’s words. Resolutely, he jumped back into the yard with her in his arms.
“Tsk.” Upon returning to the yard, Mei Zhuyu vaguely heard the little girl make a soft sound, one full of regret, as if saying, “What a pity.”
Mei Zhuyu: …
He looked down at the little girl, who was now holding her face cutely and smiling like a little trumpet flower. There was no sign of unhappiness on her face at all, making Mei Zhuyu wonder if the sound had just been his imagination.
After being set down, the little girl ran to the pool in the yard, climbed onto a big rock, and dipped her feet into the water.
Mei Zhuyu didn’t have time to stop her and hurried over to support her. “There might be snakes in the grass here, and there could be bugs in the water. Don’t put your feet down, take them out quickly.”
After he dragged her away from the pool, the little girl suddenly turned around and squatted down, burying her head in her arms without saying anything. Mei Zhuyu thought she was angry. Children could be so unreasonable, and it seemed Wu Zhen had been even more unreasonable when she was younger. He tapped the little girl’s shoulder gently and said, “There really might be a snake in the water over there.”
“If you want to play, you can play during the day.”
“Wu Zhen?”
The little girl finally stood up and turned to face Mei Zhuyu. Her expression wasn’t angry or sad; instead, it was sparkling and mysterious. She clasped her hands together and leaned in closer, whispering, “Come closer, I’ll show you something fun!”
Mei Zhuyu simply couldn’t figure out what was going on in the little girl’s head, so he leaned closer, his curiosity piqued. As he did, the little girl smiled mischievously, suddenly opened her palms, and giggled, “Look!”
A small frog leaped out of her two white hands, flying straight toward Mei Zhuyu’s face. With lightning-fast reflexes, Mei Zhuyu grabbed the frog by its leg and tossed it into the pool with a splash, accompanied by a disgruntled “quack”.
The little girl, acting as if nothing had happened, put her hands behind her back and looked innocently at the sky and ground. Mei Zhuyu frowned as he gazed down at her. He had always been sensible and obedient, even as a child. He had dealt with many mischievous disciples at the temple, each one eventually becoming obedient under his strict guidance. But the little girl in front of him was exceptionally naughty.
Just as he was about to say something, the little girl looked up at him with large, pitiful eyes, as if she had sensed his frustration. She tugged at his clothes and whimpered in a baby voice, “I miss my parents and sister~”
She rubbed her eyes and pretended to cry. The sight of her looking so forlorn made Mei Zhuyu’s heart soften immediately. Even though he knew she was putting on an act, he couldn’t bring himself to scold her.
No matter how much mischief she caused, as long as he remembered that she was Wu Zhen, he found himself at a loss for how to handle her.
“I’ll take you to see them tomorrow. Don’t be sad,” he said, squatting down in front of the little girl and gently patting her head.
The little girl peeked out from behind her hands to gauge his reaction. Once she saw that his anger had dissipated, she relaxed, like a small animal reassured that the danger had passed. She smiled brightly again, her previous tears forgotten.
“I want that shiny little fly!” She suddenly demanded, referring to the fireflies flitting around the yard. Mei Zhuyu, having no other choice, indulged her request and helped her catch fireflies.
Eventually, the little girl fell asleep on Mei Zhuyu’s back, clutching a small, translucent gauze bag filled with glowing fireflies. Even in her sleep, she was restless, rolling off his back and nearly tumbling to the ground.
Mei Zhuyu quickly reached back with one hand, catching her by the feet and preventing her fall. Even after all the excitement, the little girl remained sound asleep.
The next morning, Wu Zhen was still like a little girl—she hadn’t recovered. She rubbed her eyes, sat up in bed, moved her legs, and stared at the quilt with a cold, expressionless face, not saying a word for a long time.
Mei Zhuyu had sat by the bed all night, reading for half the time. Now, seeing that she was awake, he wanted to call her to get up, wash up, and have breakfast, but seeing her like this, he suddenly felt a little nervous for some reason. He didn’t know what was wrong with her.
