The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 50
They had randomly found a roof to shelter from the rain, and it turned out to belong to acquaintances.
The owner of the house, Mr. Song, and his wife, Madam Fu, finally heard the commotion and came out. Upon seeing Wu Zhen, the chubby Madam Fu, with her round white face, smiled with joy and rushed over to her.
“Sister Zhen, I haven’t seen you in so long!”
Mr. Song quickly pulled his wife back and whispered, “Have some tact! Didn’t you see the person standing next to Sister Zhen?”
Only then did Madam Fu notice Mei Zhuyu, and she cried out, holding her face in her hands, “Is this your fiancé, Sister Zhen? This is the first time I’ve seen him!”
Mr. Song smiled with a bit of pride, saying “It’s not the first time I’ve seen him. I’ve seen him several times.”
He worked in the Secretariat as a Right Assistant Official. Although he didn’t often interact with officials from the Ministry of Justice, he had met them on occasion since they were officials in the same dynasty.
Wu Zhen saw the two of them whispering to each other and said with a smile, “I think your vision isn’t much better. Look at us—our clothes are dripping wet, and you’re just going to stand there watching us?”
Mr. Song slapped his forehead and quickly led them to change clothes. Halfway through, Madam Fu came over and pulled Wu Zhen to the side, saying, “Sister Zhen, this silly Mr. Song forgot you’re a woman. How could you forget it yourself and follow them? You should come with me!”
Mei Zhuyu breathed a sigh of relief. He had seen Wu Zhen preparing to go into the room with him to change clothes and felt conflicted, almost speaking up to remind her. Fortunately, someone finally came to the rescue.
Madam Fu had a round figure, so Wu Zhen found the clothes a little loose, but fortunately, she was a bit taller, so they still fit. Madam Fu, like many young ladies, loved to wear bright red, green flowers, and colorful dresses. Wu Zhen chose a lilac-colored chest-length blouse that wasn’t too bright, paired it with a silver-red shawl, dried her hair, and tied it up casually.
Madam Fu held the pomegranate-red dress that Wu Zhen had rejected, her face showing regret. Seeing Wu Zhen quickly packing up and preparing to leave, she hastily said, “Sister Zhen, I have two newly made necklaces here, would you like to wear one? And this skirt, at least put a sachet or pendant under it. This bun has no decoration at all, it’s too monotonous. I also made some new jewelry recently, you can take a look~”
Wu Zhen noticed her mumbling and circling around her reluctantly, so she clicked her tongue, turned her head, and spotted a few pink peonies on the dressing table. She cut a small one and inserted it into her bun.
“Is this okay?”
Madam Fu covered her chest with her hands, nearly dying of laughter at her sister Zhen’s expression. She could only hold herself and smile at her, “Sister Zhen, you’re so pretty~” Their sister Zhen was good-looking, and she was indeed pretty no matter what she wore.
Wu Zhen preferred neat, round-necked robes because her graceful manner made everyone praise her elegance. But when she donned women’s clothes, she exuded a different kind of charm and attractiveness, especially with her lazy, casual manner and half-smile. Even Madam Fu was moved by her appearance, not to mention a certain man who already had her in his heart.
Mei Zhuyu was sitting in front of the hall, watching the rain and the dark sky outside, when he heard footsteps approaching from afar. He turned and saw Wu Zhen coming from the corridor. Her skirt flowed, her shawl was loose, and a pink peony adorned her black hair. She emerged from the darkness, light as mist.
For a moment, the sound of rain in his ears seemed to fade away, and when he saw her approaching, he looked a little dazed.
“My dear,” Wu Zhen called to him, but when she saw that he was only staring at her, she held back her laughter and called him again. Then he seemed to wake up from a dream, but soon turned back. However, he no longer looked at her face; instead, he only stared at the shoes on her feet and responded softly.
Wu Zhen noticed the wet corner of his robe and asked, “Why didn’t you change your wet clothes?”
As soon as she asked, she remembered and tapped her forehead, “I forgot, you’re so tall, much taller than Mr. Song. You can’t wear his clothes, right?”
Mei Zhuyu pulled his wet robe from her hands and sat aside, as if afraid the moisture from his body might get closer to her. “I am a little tall, so the clothes don’t fit. It won’t matter; it will dry after a while.”
Earlier, Song Langjun had found several pieces of clothing, but they all were short. It was really inappropriate, so he had to give up.
Wu Zhen looked at his profile, stretched out a finger, and turned his face towards her. “Are the clothes underneath soaked?”
Mei Zhuyu shifted his head uncomfortably and shook it, “No.”
He was still wearing the wet clothes, though he had wiped them off, so his hair was a little messy, with a few strands sticking to his cheeks. His hair seemed darker than hers, as if it had been soaked in ink.
Wu Zhen felt that she was a decent person and wouldn’t deliberately tease others, but somehow, she couldn’t help but want to touch the reserved man.
In the end, she let go of his hand and just sat next to Mei Zhuyu, watching the rain outside with him.
“Have you ever cried when you were very sad?”
Mei Zhuyu didn’t know why she suddenly asked, but he answered, “I don’t remember clearly; it seems like there was one time.”
“Only one time?”
“I probably cried before when I was little, but only once.”
Wu Zhen thought: It looks like it will be troublesome.
She was considering how to make someone cry when she suddenly noticed from the corner of her eye that Mei Zhuyu’s left hand seemed to be shaking. His hands were long and very beautiful, at least more beautiful than his appearance. Wu Zhen didn’t think twice and held his hand. “Why are you shaking so much? Are you feeling cold?”
Mei Zhuyu had tried his best to hide his hand in his sleeve, but he didn’t expect that she would notice it anyway. After hesitating for a while, he told the truth, “It’s not cold, it’s a problem I got a few years ago. Every time it rains like this, this hand can’t help but tremble.”
The day his parents died was also on a rainy day. His entire hand was soaked in their blood. He still remembered the trembling feeling when this hand clenched involuntarily and crushed a heart. The burning blood and the cold rain made him tremble uncontrollably. Over the past few years, others thought he had moved on, but only that hand, which would subconsciously feel cold and tremble on rainy days, reminded him that some things were not over yet.
Mei Zhuyu took a deep breath and tried to control his hand. He didn’t want Wu Zhen to pay too much attention to his strange problem. However, he was still helpless with this hand, just like many times before.
