The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 46
Empress Wu had no choice but to block the news and keep the matter secret while continuing to send people to search. As she busied herself, the white cat followed her closely, meowing helplessly.
Annoyed by the constant noise, Empress Wu turned around and snapped, “Stop making noise!”
The cute white cat paused for a moment, then suddenly turned and dashed towards a row of shelves in the hall. Spotting a slender, mellow-colored vase, the cat pushed it with its paw. Empress Wu gasped, her face darkening as she watched her favorite porcelain vase shatter into pieces on the ground.
“Dead cat, you…”
The white cat used her claws again, this time knocking down another of Empress Wu’s beloved glass mirrors.
Empress Wu: “…” Why do you always go after my favorite things?
She strode forward and tried to catch the white cat, but the cat was extremely agile and quickly slipped away. It dived into a cabinet, took out an old purse, and placed it in front of Empress Wu.
Empress Wu paused. That was the first purse made for her by Imperial Concubine Mei. Imperial Concubine Mei was cold and arrogant; she wasn’t skilled in such crafts. Her craftsmanship was poor, and the purse was ugly. Later, she made a better one for Empress Wu, but Empress Wu kept that first purse in the cabinet. Only she and Imperial Concubine Mei knew the location and meaning of that purse.
Empress Wu looked at the white cat strangely, and after a long while, she asked, “You mean, since she is in your hands, I must not act rashly?”
The white cat stretched out her claws and retracted them twice before gritting her teeth, turning her head, and looking around. She then pulled out another skirt from the closet.
Empress Wu’s expression slowly changed, “…Are you Su Han?”
Mei Suhan was the name of Concubine Mei.
The white cat nodded, her previous ferocity gone, and approached docilely, rubbing against Empress Wu’s hand. Empress Wu recoiled, feeling goosebumps all over her body.
After receiving the news of failure from the ghost servant, Pei Jiya spat out a mouthful of blood. He was used to spitting blood from time to time, so he calmly picked up the tea beside him to rinse his mouth and wash away the bloody taste.
Is it possible that people with the surname Mei are born to be incompatible with me? Pei Jiya couldn’t help but wonder. Why are all the failures related to the Mei family?
First, it was Mei Si. Although he had done well initially and used the monster brush he had specially made to draw the evil spirits as he had imagined, the evil spirits disappeared before they could cause any major trouble. His investigation showed that Mei Si was clearly a naive and foolish person, not very courageous, yet he destroyed the monster pen, which not only took the matter out of Pei Jiya’s control but also alerted Wu Zhen and almost exposed him indirectly.
Then there was Mei Zhuyu, who hid himself so deeply and turned out to be a Taoist priest with good cultivation. Pei Jiya wanted to destroy him at the old mansion but failed, losing his clone in the process. Even the monster dogs he raised to create chaos were killed in one encounter. As far as Pei Jiya knew, Taoist priests with good cultivation were typically abstinent and never married in the secular world. Why did this hateful, ugly Taoist Priest want to steal his things?
There was also the “Cat Morph jinx” he had released. That was a kind of spirit, created by using the skin of some animals and strange magic. This “Cat Morph jinx” could wrap a person and turn them into a cat.Â
Pei Jiya had tried to make “Dog Morph jinx” and “Wolf Morph jinx” before, but he wasn’t very satisfied with them. The Cat Morph jinx was his favorite and most successful creation. Originally, he made it specifically for Empress Wu. He calculated that the Cat Morph jinx would attract Empress Wu, turn her into a cat, and cause chaos—he didn’t believe that Empress Wu would still have the mind to arrange her sister’s marriage after being transformed like that.
But the one who turned into a cat was not Empress Wu, but Concubine Mei.
Mei Si, Mei Zhuyu, and Concubine Mei—all of them were beyond his expectations and ruined his plans. Pei Jiya felt so aggrieved that he spat out another mouthful of blood. He had done too many strange things, even to the point of messing up his own body. Pei Jiya didn’t care much about it, though. He took out a handkerchief to wipe his mouth and began to think about what to do next to successfully cause chaos and prevent Wu Zhen’s wedding without exposing himself.
Pei Jiya dared not be careless at all. He knew Wu Zhen well. If she discovered these things, she would show no mercy. In a way, Pei Jiya admired her ruthlessness.
Just when he was thinking about Wu Zhen, she arrived. She visited him every day and was always very kind to her cousin, who had played with her for two years when she was young.
Pei Jiya took out a set of tea sets and prepared to make tea for her. The weather that day wasn’t great—no sunshine, a bit gloomy and hot, like it was going to rain. The two of them sat by the open window, enjoying the occasional breeze and the soothing sound of boiling water.
There were many peonies planted in the garden for entertaining guests. It was their blooming season, and the large flower disks were particularly beautiful. Because of Pei Jiya’s preference, the garden was planted with white peonies. Though all were white, there were several different varieties, such as Zhaoyubai (Bright Jade White), Songyexiang (Pine Leaf Fragrance), Qingqiong (Pure Sky), Xueta (Snow Pagoda), and Yulouchunxue (Jade Tower Spring Snow).
In the vase in the house, there were also two cut branches of Yulou Chunxue (Jade Tower Spring Snow). Wu Zhen, waiting for her cousin Pei to make tea, picked up the peony petals in the vase out of boredom.
While people usually added many things to their tea, making it more like tea porridge, Pei Jiya was different. He only used tea leaves, drying and grinding them into powder before boiling them in water. He didn’t add any other ingredients. After making that light-tasting tea, he pushed a cup in front of Wu Zhen and said, “The nobles in the south now prefer this kind of tea. Zhen should try it and see if it suits your taste.”
Wu Zhen finally let go of the flowers she was playing with, tasted the tea out of politeness, and then told her cousin Pei honestly, “It’s bitter and astringent; I can’t get used to the taste. Sweet tea is better.” She was accustomed to adding sweet dates and longans when making tea. As for Pei Jiya’s elegant way of drinking tea, Wu Zhen admitted it looked refined, but the taste was not to her liking.
She then added, “But I think Second Young Master Mei will like this. His taste is much lighter than mine. Cousin Pei, you might enjoy chatting with him. Next time, I’ll ask him to try your tea.”
Pei Jiya smiled kindly, but in his heart he was thinking that it would be better to just poison the Second Young Master Mei to death next time.
