The Daily Life Of Mei Furen Doting On Her Husband - Chapter 14
Mei Zhuyu visibly became uneasy upon seeing Wu Zhen sitting on his bed. Despite his efforts to maintain composure, Wu Zhen noticed him subconsciously adjusting his collar. He was dressed casually in a middle shirt with a robe over it, his hair slightly disheveled as he had been preparing to retire for the night. It seemed he wanted to tidy himself up but restrained the impulse. He grasped his sleeve momentarily and then released it. While speaking to her, his gaze remained fixed on her feet, avoiding direct eye contact.
Of course, the most striking thing was Mei Zhuyu’s neck, which was slowly turning red and seemed to be spreading upwards.
His slightly bewildered expression gave him a genuinely “young gentleman” appearance, a stark contrast from the cold demeanor he displayed that afternoon. It was as if he were two different people.
It was quite cute.
Despite one standing and the other sitting, their auras had completely flipped. Wu Zhen observed him standing there, seemingly frozen, and couldn’t help but feel like she might be teasing him too much. She wondered, Did I do something wrong? I didn’t behave inappropriately.
Seeing Mei Zhuyu turning more red, Wu Zhen finally regained her composure. She coughed lightly and explained earnestly, “Actually, I came here today out of curiosity. I wanted to see the man who might marry me. I was afraid it would startle you if I approached directly, so I hurriedly hid under your bed. I didn’t expect you to find me. I apologize sincerely for the trouble.”
Her conduct was indeed surprising. Many others might have scolded her for such audacity or deemed her too frivolous. Yet Mei Zhuyu once again displayed remarkable composure. Without questioning Wu Zhen’s explanation, he simply nodded and replied, “I see. I understand. It’s late now. I’ll take my leave.”
After he finished speaking, he turned around abruptly and swiftly exited the room.
Wu Zhen watched in bewilderment at the closed door. “Young Master, why are you taking your leave? This is your room, isn’t it?”
As she said this, the door suddenly swung open once more, and Mei Zhuyu reentered. His expression was difficult to read, as if he had just remembered that it was indeed his room and Wu Zhen was the one who had appeared unexpectedly.
“This is my room. It’s not appropriate for Second Miss Wu to stay here,” Mei Zhuyu stated calmly. “The gates have been closed for a while now, and you cannot return to Duke Yu’s Mansion. There’s a guest room in the backyard where I will take you.”
Mei Zhuyu spoke slowly, his words echoing in the room as the candlelight cast a long, trembling shadow.
Wu Zhen, sensing his unease, decided against pressing further. She suppressed her thoughts and stood up, following him quietly to the backyard.
Once they reached the door of the guest room, Mei Zhuyu nodded stiffly and turned to head back to his own room. Just then, Wu Zhen stumbled unexpectedly, lurching forward. Instinctively, Mei Zhuyu reached out to assist her, causing Wu Zhen to collide with him abruptly.
The lantern slipped from Mei Zhuyu’s hand and tumbled down, extinguishing its light as it went. Stiff as a statue, he held Wu Zhen’s soft frame close, feeling the warmth and fragrance emanating from her.
Wu Zhen steadied herself against his chest and softly uttered, “Thank you.”
Mei Zhuyu didn’t retrieve the fallen lantern. He nodded absentmindedly, turned abruptly, and hurried away. His steps were disordered, almost causing him to collide with a pillar.
Watching him depart, Wu Zhen sighed softly, “Indeed, quite slender.”Â
She raised her hand and retrieved a cloth bag. As Mei Zhuyu had supported her, she had swiftly removed it, revealing the undead bone inside. With a deft motion, she took the other undead bone and placed it in the same small bag.
Having retrieved all the undead bones, Wu Zhen left behind the red round-necked robe still tucked under the young man’s bed, dismissing it as inconsequential.
Instead of resting in the guest room, she scanned the front yard and then jumped the wall. She had considered questioning Mei Zhuyu about his intentions to marry her, but now she felt no need to ask.
He was so shy, if she asked that kind of question again, wouldn’t that be harassment?
When Wu Zhen spotted Huzhu standing in the shadows near the wall, waiting for her, she approached quietly. Gently, she reached out and patted Huzhu to bring her back from her thoughts. “You haven’t been discovered, have you?”Â
Huzhu covered her chest with her hands, her expression a mix of complexity and resentment. “Of course not,” she replied bitterly. “I slipped out of the cell… Cat Lord, this was my first time ever in prison.”
“How could Mr. Mei be so heartless?” Huzhu exclaimed, still reeling from the shock of being imprisoned. “He handed me over to the soldiers without a second thought, even though I’m just a weak woman.”
She continued, her disbelief evident, “Even if my appearance wasn’t as beautiful as it is now, I’m still considered a top-notch beauty. Yet he showed me no sympathy. Could he be homosexual?”
After saying that, she remembered that Mr. Mei might be Cat Lord’s future husband, and she couldn’t help but worry about Wu Zhen. She frowned and sighed, “Based on my experience of seeing countless people, Mr. Mei is probably a cold-hearted person. It would be difficult for you to face someone like that every day. How boring and challenging it would be to confront such a cold and heartless person in the future, not to mention experiencing the joy of romantic love…”
Wu Zhen had previously thought that Young Mr. Mei had a cold personality. However, as she listened to what Huzhu said, she sensed something was amiss. She vividly recalled the strong, rapid heartbeat of that “cold-faced and heartless person”. His heart was warm and pounding intensely. Fearful that Young Master might faint, she swiftly took the undead bone hanging from his waist and stepped back, not daring to waste a moment.
Huzhu continued to murmur, “How will you live your life in the future, Cat Lord? Why not find a gentle and understanding man? Should I find one for you?” She had a soft spot for gentlemen, believing only those who cherished women could capture her attention.
Wu Zhen understood her tendency, so she didn’t say much. Instead, she gestured southeastward and remarked, “Alright, let’s deal with the undead bone issue first, and we can discuss the rest later.”
Upon hearing this, Huzhu ceased discussing those matters. Everyone knew the cat was typically lazy but became remarkably efficient and focused when handling serious tasks. She disliked distractions during such times.
That night, they gathered six undead bones. Once they collected all the undead bones and burned them, they could force the undead corpse to appear. Wu Zhen estimated that there were likely still a few undead bones yet to be found.
During the day, the resentment of the undead bones was particularly weak, making them difficult to locate. Therefore, Wu Zhen decided to rest where Huzhu worked. Her younger brothers, who always tagged along when she was around, naturally gathered together with her. They enjoyed drinking and laughing together during the meal.
At one point, while they were dining, Huzhu suddenly recalled the events of the previous night and impulsively posed a question to everyone.
“If a beautiful, frail, and pitiful girl knocked on your door in the middle of the night, saying she was being chased by a bad guy and begging you to let her stay for one night, what would you do?”
A group of dandy young men burst into laughter. Some responded generously, “We should show kindness to women and offer comfort.”
Others winked and nodded in agreement, saying, “Absolutely, we should welcome her warmly. Who knows, it could lead to a romantic relationship.”
A few hesitated, murmuring, “It might not be appropriate. I would find a servant to stay with us.”
“Maybe you could let her rest in your room and find another room for yourself.”
Huzhu nodded in agreement. That seemed like the right thing to do. Who would imprison someone and lock them away like what the second son of the Mei family did? It was simply absurd!
After everyone had shared their thoughts, it was Mei Si’s turn. He paused for a moment and then said, “A strange, beautiful woman who suddenly appears in the middle of the night might be a fox spirit or a ghost. We should be cautious to avoid harm.”
His words sparked laughter among the group.
Only Wu Zhen quietly thought to herself that sometimes, the foolish boy could accidentally stumble upon a valid point.
Seeing Mei Si becoming annoyed by the teasing, Wu Zhen clapped her hands to hush everyone and announced, “We’re going goose hunting outside the city this afternoon. Those who wish to join us should go back, prepare, and come in time.”
