Hui Xian thought of that night and asked Chen Jili, “Have you never doubted Li Shuangshuang’s words?”

“No, every time there was a misunderstanding, Shuangshuang will explain and will open up to me unreservedly, so that I can understand her original intention and bitterness. Ning Qing was different. She was always so stubborn. She never admitted mistakes, and is aggressive. I used to believe her too. Since Wang Jingming and Shuanshuang, my trust in her has basically disappeared.”

“If I tell you that whatever happened to Li Shuangshuang was done by herself, will you believe it?”

Chen Jili looked up. He was a little surprised at Hui Xian’s words. The two seemed to be playing chess with each other for the win.

“I came to Ersao, naturally I will believe what you say.  Maybe I have always felt guilty about Li Shuangshuang, so I looked at things differently. They may not be as I had thought.”

Hui Xian said, “Okay, third brother since you want to understand how Li Shuangshuang is in my eyes, then I will talk about this matter which I have witnessed. As for how you view it, it’s not important anymore.”

That happened four years ago. Ning Qing and Li Shuangshuang couldn’t even maintain the basic feelings of being classmates. The crux of the relationship between them was of course Chen Jili.

Over the past six months, the summer clothes incident between Ning Qing and Li Shuangshuang, the honey cake incident, the oil-paper umbrella incident, and the event of falling into the water, etc, had turned the two into an incommensurable situation.

On the surface, Li Shuangshuang was a victim every time, and Ning Qing was a perpetrator. But Hui Xian knew that Ning Qing was the victim of every incident.

At that time, all the classmates sympathized with Li Shuangshuang, accusing Ning Qing of bullying an orphan. All of them pointed their spearheads to Ning Qing, saying that she was jealous because of love. Chen Jili wasn’t good to her as he was to Li Shuangshuang. Ning Qing’s explanation became a quibble, and it became a mistake. They only believed what they saw and it passed on from one person to another.

The reason why such a situation occurred was also related to the following points.

Li Shuangshuang was responsible for judging the listening grade at that time, which was related to Mr. Mu’s evaluation of their graduation. Li Shuangshuang’s authority was equivalent to half of Mr. Mu’s, so many people bootlicked Li Shuangshuang. 

Also, everyone gradually came to know of Li Shuangshuang’s identity. She was an orphan girl living under someone else’s roof. They were even more sympathetic. Coupled with the fact that most teenagers were infatuated with Li Shuangshuang, it was inevitable for them to favor her.

When Ning Qing was agitated, she got fierce as opposed to Li Shuangshuang who was much weaker. Therefore, most people believe in Li Shuangshuang and sympathize with her.

Hui Xian said this and asked Chen Jili, “Have you ever thought of these?”

Chen Jili was silent. He never thought about it. In his eyes, the disputes between the girls were trivial things. He never cared about them.

He didn’t have any impression of some of those incidents or what happened with the honey cake. He came to know about the oil-paper umbrella, but it wasn’t a big deal. He remembered the incident of falling into the water, he blamed Ning Qing fiercely that time.

Hui Xian didn’t dig further and continued.

One day, a letter was placed in Ning Qing’s lesson plan book. There was no name. The letter asked her to meet after the end of the school, the person had  something to discuss with her.

The handwriting on the letter was very similar to Chen Jili’s.

Ning Qing’s relationship with Chen Jili was also very critical at that time. It was after the falling in water incident and Ning Qing panicked. The two didn’t speak to each other. Even so, according to Chen Jili’s character, he wouldn’t take initiative. It looked weird. So Ning Qing showed Hui Xian the letter.

After school, it was dark and waiting at the gate of the sparsely populated school was risky. So Hui Xian decided to go with Ning Qing.

The two came to the school in advance to the time shown on the letter. Hui Xian didn’t show up. She was hiding in the woods not far away, so she could see Ning Qing.

If Chen Jili came to her, she would be relieved. After all, his character could be trusted. He wouldn’t hurt Ning Qing.

A figure emerged from the path on the side of the school holding an object like a food box in his hand. Hui Xian recognized him at a glance even though the night was covering his face. Wang Jingming, was a good friend of Chen Zhongyi and Chen Jili. He was of medium height and had a thin profile peculiar to teenagers. When he saw Ning Qing, his steps were hesitant.

Wang Jingming had a close relationship with the Chen family brothers and was their good friend for more than ten years. According to Chen Zhongyi, they were like brothers.

His eyes were small, his face was thin and he looked very smart. With his cheerful personality, he was joyful and they often played together.

Ever since knowing the relationship between Hui Xian and Chen Zhongyi, he called her second sister-in-law. Hui Xian had a good impression of him as a teenager with a lively personality.

The handwriting was easy to explain. The handwriting of Wang Jingming and Chen Jili were indeed somewhat similar. They grew up together, and even the professor who taught them to read and write was the same person.
