Reborn Lady - Chapter 437
Women passing by often showed this shy look to him, but why was she doing the same?
There was no moment when Cui Yu realized more clearly than at that moment that the girl who used to enjoy chasing after him and calling him her little uncle had truly grown up.
Cui Yu took two steps back, looking in the direction Wei Ying had come from, and frowned as he asked, “Why is the Young Lady here?”
Wei Ying shifted her wrapped left hand, lowering her eyes as she replied, “I was admiring the flowers over there, and I thought I glimpsed a figure resembling you, so I followed to take a look.”
Hearing this, Cui Yu felt a pang of fear, and he spoke in a stern voice, “It really is me this time, but if it had been someone else with malicious intentions, what would the Young Lady do?”
Wei Ying pursed her lips, keeping her head bowed in silence. Despite her silence, she felt content in her heart; as long as she was with him, happiness was assured.
“What about Yu Lang, why are you here?” After a while, Wei Ying asked softly.
Cui Yu was startled by the title, and his heart beat wildly.
Many people called him that, but when she did, it always seemed to carry an extra layer of lingering meaning.
Without answering her question, Cui Yu looked down at her feet and asked, “Can you stand up?”
Wei Ying tried to move her ankle, then took a breath and pretended, “It hurts.”
Cui Yu, unaware of the girl’s subtle intentions, believed her and glanced behind her, asking, “How far away is your entourage?”
Wei Ying pondered for a moment before replying, “I chased after you for almost the duration of a cup of tea, so we should be quite a distance away by now, right?”
Cui Yu’s brows furrowed even deeper. He realized that leaving her alone to find her maid was not a reassuring decision. “It’s not safe for you to stay alone here,” he said, concerned.
“It’s okay, I’ll rest for a while,” Wei Ying assured him, trying to appear relaxed despite her own worries.
After a moment of consideration, Cui Yu suggested, “Then I’ll go a bit farther and wait here with you. Perhaps they’ll find us soon.”
Fear crept into Wei Ying’s voice as she responded, “Don’t go too far, please?”
Cui Yu nodded in understanding, then moved away about fifty steps.
Wei Ying was left speechless.
She wanted to talk to him, to get closer, and if Cui Yu didn’t care about her, that would have been fine. But since he did care, why didn’t he seize this opportunity?
As Wei Ying glanced around, she suddenly saw something terrifying. Gripping the peach tree behind her with both hands, she attempted to stand up.
When Cui Yu noticed her distress, he rushed over in shock. Before he could reach her, Wei Ying threw herself into his arms, exclaiming, “There’s a snake!”
A snake…
Despite knowing a few Kung Gu tricks, Cui Yu was merely putting on airs; he was, in truth, a pure literati. Not only was the pampered young lady afraid of snakes, but he was also afraid of them.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Cui Yu quickly lifted Wei Ying onto his back and hurriedly left the area.
Surrounded by dense peach trees, Wei Ying lay on his not-so-broad back, watching the peach blossoms pass by. She then gazed at Cui Yu’s handsome and flushed profile, wishing that time would freeze in this moment, never wanting to be separated from him.
She nestled her face against Cui Yu’s shoulder with nostalgia.
Cui Yu froze, afraid of being seen, and subconsciously hid behind a tree.
“Well, it should be safe here. I’ll let you down,” Cui Yu whispered.
Wei Ying shook her head and, sounding somewhat foolish, said, “There are snakes in the grass. I want you to carry me.”
With that coquettish tone, Cui Yu’s heartbeat became increasingly erratic, and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead.
He could easily reject the advances of other women, but he couldn’t bear to leave her alone with this request while she was on his back.
“Young Lady, please don’t tease me,” Cui Yu said tentatively.
Just as Wei Ying was about to speak, the voices of Ah Fu and Guo Suying calling her came from afar.
Cui Yu breathed a sigh of relief and let her go, disregarding Wei Ying’s objections.
Knowing that he was about to leave, Wei Ying didn’t want to pretend anymore. She stood firmly on both feet, and as she saw Cui Yu about to turn around, she couldn’t help but grab his clothes at the corner.
“Yu Lang, I… I heard that you don’t plan to get married. Is it true?”
Cui Yu turned away from her and spoke calmly, “No, if I meet the right person, as long as she’s not afraid that she will be killed if she gets betrothed to me, I would consider marriage.”
Wei Ying, being only thirteen years old, upon hearing this, simply felt a pang of disappointment, realizing he had no special affection for her. With a heavy heart, she let go of his hands.
Cui Yu walked away swiftly, without casting a glance back.
From then on, whenever the two crossed paths in the Yan Palace, Cui Yu never looked at Wei Ying again. And if he did happen to glance in her direction, it was only after Wei Ying had already walked past.
In the third year of Jinghe, the Third Princess, Wei Ying, reached the age of twenty-five.
For the past two years, she had been compiling books with Empress Xu. The previous year, during Chongyang, she completed “Encouraging Kindness”. Now, with the court stable and the world relatively peaceful, Wei Ying no longer wished to remain in Jinling. She was prepared to travel and observe the sentiments of the people on behalf of her father.
Her father was too occupied; even if she stayed in the capital, he wouldn’t be able to devote much attention to her. Her mother and stepmothers had brothers, sisters-in-law, and nephews who were filial, so Wei Ying could let them go.
The only thing she couldn’t let go of was Cui Yu.
In the early hours of that day, a knock echoed on the door of Cui Yu’s mansion.
The concierge opened the door to find a bearded, fair-faced man in his twenties standing before him.
The young man gestured to his mouth, indicating that he was unable to speak, and then presented a letter bearing the inscription “For Cui Yu personally”.
The concierge directed him to wait in the hall and dispatched a servant to deliver the letter to Cui Yu, who rarely spent the night at home.
In truth, Cui Yu was already thirty-five years old. While it may seem young to hold a position as a cabinet minister at his age, he was, in fact, someone who had reached a significant point in his life.
Cui Yu finished his breakfast, received the letter, and upon seeing the handwriting on the envelope, his expression shifted.
