Reborn Lady - Chapter 436
With a determination, Wei Ying paid no heed to the objections from Cui Yu and the accompanying maids and eunuchs. She swiftly took off her shoes, rolled up her trousers, and stood in the stream with her bare feet.
Cui Yu shook his head, feeling compelled to paint quickly in order to accommodate Wei Ying’s impatience.
Meanwhile, Wei Ying refused to remain still in the water; she darted around, occasionally bending over with her face almost touching the surface, eager to spot any fish below.
After struggling for a while, Cui Yu eventually decided to draw King Yan’s beloved daughter in a more dignified manner.
As a result, in the final painting that Wei Ying received, she was portrayed sitting by the stream with a sweet smile adorning her face.
Fortunately, Wei Ying was unconcerned about such details; she believed she looked good in the painting, and that was all that mattered to her.
“Thank you, Little Uncle!”
“Well, let’s head back quickly,” Cui Yu urged, wary that Wei Ying might be tempted to return to playing in the water. Turning to the maid beside Wei Ying, he instructed, “Remember to prepare a bowl of ginger soup for the young lady when we return.”
The servant girl Ah Fu responded with a smile, acknowledging the task.

In the spring when Wei Ying was thirteen years old, King Yan arranged a second match for Cui Yu. The woman from the prospective match had slightly damaged her appearance due to an accident involving water, causing her complexion to turn yellow.
Although Cui Yu was willing to honor the marriage contract, the woman refused to accept what she perceived as pity and insisted on not continuing with the marriage.
In reality, it was merely an unfortunate occurrence, but with two such incidents happening to Cui Yu in succession, rumors soon began circulating in the city about his marital situation.
King Yan was deeply angered by these rumors, but Cui Yu remained unperturbed. He declined King Yan’s offer to find him another suitable wife and instead chose to live independently for the time being.
Initially, he hadn’t felt a pressing need to marry, but both his sister and King Yan believed it was time for him to settle down.
When news of the situation reached Wei Ying, she retreated to her study alone and retrieved a cherished painting.
It was the painting gifted to her by Cui Yu that year. In it, she appeared carefree, her eyes reflecting innocence and purity.
As Wei Ying rubbed her fingertips across the paper, she looked at the words detailing the time of painting and the identity of the person in the painting. However, there was no signature of the painter.
Lost in thought, Wei Ying mused that perhaps in a few hundred years, future generations would stumble upon this painting and recognize it as that of King Yan’s beloved daughter. Yet, the identity of the artist would remain a mystery.
Nevertheless, she would always remember the handsome scholar who once painted by the stream, and the profound gentleness in his eyes when he smiled.
As a child, Wei Ying had viewed Cui Yu as an elder figure, finding him kind and approachable. However, over the past two years, her feelings towards him had subtly shifted. When she painted, thoughts of Cui Yu would occupy her mind, causing her to neglect basic needs like eating and drinking. On one hand, upon learning of her father’s plans for Cui Yu’s marriage, her mood would darken. On the other hand, in moments like now, when she discovered that Cui Yu had decided against marriage, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of quiet joy.
Wei Ying knew it was wrong to act on her feelings, but she found herself unable to control her heart.
In mid-April, she arranged to go out and explore the city with her cousin, Guo Suying.
Dongshan was a familiar spot for their outings, known for its breathtaking scenery. Whenever they grew weary, they would retreat to Dongshan Temple for a simple vegetarian meal.
Amidst the lingering bloom of peach blossoms, Wei Ying’s gaze fell upon a figure she recognized. Her heart quickened, prompting Wei Ying to instruct Ah Fu to cover for her as she quietly made her way towards the man.
Cui Yu had ventured to the mountains that day to meet with a revered monk at the monastery. Following their encounter, he felt the need to indulge in a leisurely stroll amidst the blooming flowers.
Due to the occasional comments from women, Cui Yu sought out secluded areas with fewer people.
As he walked, he became aware of someone trailing behind him. The sound of footsteps echoed in his ears, confirming it was indeed a woman. Frowning, Cui Yu went towards a more remote path, hoping to shake her off amidst the rugged mountain terrain.
There was a sharp cry followed by the unmistakable sound of someone falling.
Cui Yu recognized the voice as somewhat familiar, and as he turned back, he saw Wei Ying on the ground in an embarrassed state. Meeting his gaze, she pursed her lips, displaying her distress.
Surprised to see her, Cui Yu hesitated momentarily before swiftly moving to assist Wei Ying. However, mindful of her status as a young lady, he opted to squat beside her, expressing concern, “Are you hurt, Your Highness?”
Feeling a slight pain in her palm, Wei Ying extended her hand to inspect it, discovering a cut caused by a twig, which had begun to bleed.
Despite the minor discomfort, Wei Ying knew it was insignificant. However, she glanced at Cui Yu, noting the drastic change in his expression. Deliberately, she exaggerated her pain, grimacing as she spoke, “My hand hurts, and my ankle too.”
She sprained her foot?
Now that Cui Yu could no longer stand by and watch, he put his hands on her shoulders and asked her to sit under a nearby tree.
He had a water bag hanging around his waist, took it off, opened the lid, and asked Wei Ying to reach out to help her wash it first.
After washing, Cui Yu lowered his head and approached Wei Ying’s hand to make sure that there was no debris left. Then he took out a handkerchief, tied it around Wei Ying’s hand, and wrapped it up.
While he was focused on his task, Wei Ying seized the moment to look at him.
Ever since she grew up, Cui Yu had never hugged her like he did when she was a child, and he always maintained proper etiquette in his words and actions. After Cui Yu moved out of the Yan Palace, their encounters became even rarer.
Now that they were so close, Wei Ying felt that Cui Yu had become even more beautiful, with a faint and elegant aura still surrounding him, and he smelled good.
Suddenly, Cui Yu looked up.
Wei Ying immediately lowered her head, but two blushes appeared on her white face.
Cui Yu’s heart skipped a beat, his rhythm lost.
