- Chapter 421 - Extra 2 Story: Wei Luo Chasing His Wife (Wu Luo + Yin Hui time travelled back together)
After gathering funds from the Yin family, King Yan departed Pingcheng once again for the border, leaving Princess Xu and his son Wei Yang to oversee affairs at the Yan Palace.
Nineteen-year-old Wei Luo was unable to accompany his father on the expedition. Instead, he continued to serve as an errand boy for the palace guards, assisting in dispatching and training duties.
Similarly, Wei Yan was assigned to work in the palace warehouse. However, the officials in charge were all appointed by King Yan himself, and the Wei brothers were merely there to observe and learn. They were not entrusted with any real responsibilities, allowing them to find excuses to slack off and greet subordinate officials instead.
Despite King Yan’s absence, Wei Luo remained diligent, never allowing himself to slack off.
One day, Wang Ping, a young eunuch from Chengxin Hall whom Wei Luo had sent out, hurriedly sought out the bodyguard department.
“Master, Second Miss is leaving the city. When I returned, the Second Miss’ carriage was still queued up in front of the city gate,” Wang Ping reported breathlessly.
Wei Luo inquired, “Who is accompanying her?”
Wang Ping replied, “Second Miss is traveling alone, accompanied by only one maid and eight guards.”
Wei Luo didn’t ask any further questions. Instead, he instructed Chang Feng to go to the stables and prepare the horses while he proceeded outside Donghua Gate.
Shortly after, Chang Feng returned with two horses: one was his black horse, while the other was Wei Luo’s own white-hoofed crow.
The master and servant mounted their horses and rode straight to the city gate.
With the ongoing war in the north and King Yan’s absence from Pingcheng, security at the city gates had been heightened. Every person entering or leaving the city underwent thorough identity and bag checks, with guards meticulously inspecting goods one by one.
Such stringent checks naturally slowed down the process.
Inside the Yin family’s carriage, Jinzhan frequently peeked out through the curtain and then complained to Yin Hui, “Why are we moving so slowly today?”
Yin Hui responded with a smile, “Take it easy. What’s the rush?”
Jinzhan glanced at her mistress and inexplicably sensed that her lady seemed to be in an unusually good mood, so much so that she didn’t mind wasting time here for nothing.
Yin Hui truly was in high spirits. Having been confined within the Yan Palace and the Shu Mansion for so long, now that she was back as an unmarried woman, she could finally venture out for some fresh air.
Initially, her grandfather had planned to accompany her, but unfortunately, when he encountered an old friend who had just arrived in Pingcheng, her grandfather had to entertain him.
As the line inched forward toward the city gate, it finally became Yin Hui’s turn.
In Pingcheng, everyone was familiar with the royal family and the affluent Yin family. The soldiers at the city gate briefly inspected the documents Jinzhan presented and glanced into the carriage to ensure no one was hiding before allowing them to pass.
Shortly after departing from the city gate, Yin Hui gracefully dismounted from the carriage and swiftly approached her beloved horse, Fei Xu.
Fei Xu was a pure white horse, while Yin Hui donned a white and pink riding outfit, resembling a crabapple blossom fluttering in the wind as they galloped away.
Wei Luo rode his horse through the city gate, catching sight of Yin Hui mounting her horse in the distance.
While there were other noble ladies capable of horseback riding, none could match her speed.
Initially nervous, fearing she might fall, Wei Luo instinctively sped up to chase after her. However, he soon slowed down, choosing to follow at a distance.
The figure ahead alternated between galloping the horse, reining it in, playing with a branch in hand, or pausing to admire unknown wildflowers by the roadside. She even teased a commoner girl, gifting her a silk flower for her hair, leaving the girl beaming with joy.
Wei Luo couldn’t help but notice her radiant smile, her eyes sparkling like peach blossoms reflected in water.
After a while, she effortlessly mounted her horse again, her movements displaying remarkable skill.
Wei Luo found himself captivated.
After a decade of marriage, he had never known that Yin could ride a horse. Once married, she had taken on the demeanor of her sister-in-law, Xu Qingwan, with a composed demeanor and soft-spoken words.
Yet, the fourteen-year-old Yin Hui before him bore no resemblance to dignity. A dignified woman wouldn’t readily show her face, let alone venture out alone without her family’s company.
Indeed, it was indiscreet behavior, but at this moment, Wei Luo couldn’t find it within himself to scold her. He simply followed her figure intently, silently observing this wife who seemed simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar to him.
The autumn air was crisp and clear, attracting a steady stream of people from nearby to Dongshan to revel in the season’s beauty or partake in the temple’s incense offerings. Between Wei Luo and Yin Hui, numerous figures mingled, adding to the bustling atmosphere of the day. Upon reaching Dongshan, Yin Hui abandoned her horse and ascended the mountain on foot.
Wei Luo continued to follow at a distance, observing her as she conversed and laughed with Jinzhan.
He watched as a frivolous young man attempted to strike up a conversation, only to be swiftly dismissed by the eight guards accompanying her.
These guards, strong and burly, remained vigilant despite the presence of the most beautiful girl in Pingcheng before them. Their attentive demeanor reflected the care and regard Yin Yong held for his beloved granddaughter.
Meanwhile, Chang Feng trailed behind his master, silently fretting over the eight guards. He couldn’t shake the feeling that when the Third Master abandoned his duties to pursue Yin Hui, the young lady of the Yin family, there might be complications. If the Third Master insisted on pursuing her, Chang Feng doubted their ability to fight the guards.
Upon arriving at Dongshan Temple, Yin Hui first knelt to pay her respects to the Buddha and offer incense, then generously donated a sum of money.
Afterward, she leisurely wandered around the temple grounds, displaying a familiarity with every nook and cranny of Dongshan Mountain. That day, she revisited this familiar place with the same joy one might feel upon meeting an old friend. She gently touched the trunk of a tree, then lifted her gaze to the bright autumn sunlight dancing among the leaves.
As a fragmented beam of light illuminated her figure, the beautiful fourteen-year-old girl seemed to radiate a soft halo.
Her upturned face remained white and delicate, her long eyelashes comfortably drooped, and a harmonious unity between a human and nature permeated the scene.
