- Chapter 413 - Extra 2 Story: Wei Luo Chasing His Wife (Wu Luo + Yin Hui time travelled back together)
The sounds of birdsong filled the room, abruptly awakening Wei Luo.
With his eyes still closed, the events of last night flooded back into his mind.
He had discussed with Madam Yin about the possibility of taking his cousin as a concubine, purely to ensure her care. However, she had uncharacteristically rebuffed him, refusing in a cold tone without allowing him a chance to explain.
As he drifted off to sleep, Wei Luo had pondered how he would manage if she remained steadfast in her refusal.
He had already resolved on a course of action. Initially, his cousin would reside in the mansion to recover from her illness. Once she had regained her health, he would arrange a suitable marriage for her. If she adamantly refused marriage, he would establish a family temple where she could live out her days in peace, devoted to Buddha.
While it was also possible for his mother to formally adopt his cousin as her own, their lack of biological relation meant that gossip was inevitable, especially considering his cousin’s prolonged residence in the mansion.
Wei Luo wondered why his wife was angry. Didn’t she like his cousin?
Thinking of his wife, Wei Luo turned around, but found the space empty.
Wei Luo’s heart tightened.
When had Madam Yin left the bed?
He was too alert to have missed her departure in the night.
Sitting up, Wei Luo finally noticed something amiss.
The previous night, he had clearly slept in her bedroom, on the intricately carved Babu bed, less than two years old, housed in the Shu Mansion. Yet, the room before him contained only a simple canopy bed, with elegant yet modest furnishings.
He was in Chengxin Hall, his residence within the Yan Palace.
It was unfathomable, but Wei Luo could recall the room he had inhabited since the age of four until he moved.
With only the faint light of dawn filtering through the window, Wei Luo settled by the bed, taking a moment to compose himself before approaching the mirror.
Normally, Wei Luo rarely checked his reflection. An Shun’er attended to washing his face and grooming his hair.
But now, Wei Luo stood before the mirror, gazing at the youthful face reflected within for an extended period.
He touched his chin.
The previous night, he was thirty years old with a growing beard. This morning, he appeared more akin to a twenty-year-old.
Outside, faint footsteps echoed—An Shun’er and two young eunuchs were tidying the house.
Wei Luo settled back onto the bed and called for An Shun’er to enter.
Without delay, An Shun’er swung the door open and stepped inside.
Wei Luo wasn’t taken aback to encounter a youthful version of An Shun’er.
“What year is it?” Wei Luo inquired, his expression betraying no emotion.
Though puzzled by his master’s inquiry, An Shun’er responded promptly, “Third Master, this year marks the sixth year of Xianning.”
Wei Luo furrowed his brow.
During the sixth year of Xianning, he was merely nineteen years old. He hadn’t yet married, so naturally, they wouldn’t share a bed.
Glancing around once more, Wei Luo couldn’t discern whether he was dreaming or if he had truly traveled back a decade.
Observing the silent master, An Shun’er asked, “It’s still early. Would you like to rest a while longer or rise now?”
Wei Luo, devoid of any desire for further sleep, replied, “Bring me some water.”
An Shun’er promptly obeyed.
Wei Luo approached the window, pushing it open to invite a refreshing breeze. The leaves of the locust tree in the courtyard swayed, their hue a deep, verdant green.
Given the climate, it should be autumn, though he could not ascertain the exact date.
Foregoing further inquiries of An Shun’er, Wei Luo knew he could deduce such details swiftly based on his surroundings.
After freshening up, Wei Luo made his way to the study. Riffling through the papers, he stumbled upon a painting he had crafted.
Wei Luo recalled.
During the sixth year of Xianning, not long after the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Kingdom of Jin in northern Xinjiang had launched another invasion. Guo Xiao led a hundred thousand forbidden troops to combat the foe, with his father also leading two guards in support.
Though Wei Luo had offered to accompany his father, he had been denied. Disappointed, Wei Luo had created this painting.
“My lord, my lord has returned!” Outside the study, before An Shun’er could arrive, an anxious voice rang out.
Wei Luo promptly emerged.
Perhaps due to his early rising, he didn’t encounter his elder brother and sister-in-law until passing by his brother’s Yizhi Hall, where they were seen rushing out in haste.
Wei Luo nodded, exchanging greetings with his brother and sister-in-law before accompanying his elder brother to the Qinzheng Hall.
At this moment, Wei Luo had already surmised the date.
In recent years, conflicts had erupted across the nation, depleting the treasury. With the Kingdom of Jin’s invasion of Yandi, the frontline awaited military supplies. Yet, their grandfather had written to their father, chastising him for excessive spending during years of warfare. Their father had devised a solution on his own.
In Wei Luo’s recollection, his father returned to Pingcheng with a storm of fury. The following day, he summoned Wei Luo, announcing his intention to arrange a marriage with the Yin family and inquiring about Wei Luo’s willingness.
As the brothers arrived at the Qinzheng Hall, they were greeted by the sight of a wrathful King Yan.
“Why is your hair crown messy?” King Yan’s gaze fell upon Wei Yan, his second son, who had evidently been remiss in his appearance, and he issued a sharp reprimand.
Wei Luo lowered his eyes, his demeanor respectful.
Their father had always possessed such a fiery temper, often casting blame when angered. Yet, Wei Luo himself rarely got scolded; it was typically his elder and second brothers who bore the brunt of their father’s scoldings.
In the past, whenever their father flew into a rage, Wei Luo would inevitably feel a nervous apprehension, dreading that he might be the next target of their father’s anger.
That day, however, Wei Luo found it all strangely familiar and oddly comforting, devoid of any fear.
When Concubine Xu arrived, King Yan’s fury momentarily stopped as he turned to vent his grievances with her. Regardless of who had wronged him, he always sought an outlet for his anger.
