Reborn Lady - Chapter 405
In these moments, Yin Hui found solace, reassured by his affection for her, despite his usual aloofness.
On the ninth day of March, Yin Hui went into labor.
Wei Luo remained in the yard, hearing her cries echoing incessantly.
Princess Xu and his mother sat in the main room, rendering it inaccessible to Wei Luo. He had to maintain composure, refraining even from pacing the courtyard. Instead, he sat alone beside the railing on the opposite side, gazing downward. His grip on his hands tightened progressively until his fingertips went numb.
The maids walked past him with basins of water, slowing down as they approached him and hastening away once they had passed. In their hurry, water spilled and dripped onto the ground.
Finally, a resounding cry echoed from the delivery room, followed by the words of congratulations.
“Third Master, your wife has given birth to a young boy. Come and see!” Jinzhan exclaimed, rushing over with tears streaming down her face.
Wei Luo remained seated in the chair, gazing at Jinzhan, and inquired, “How is Madam?”
If Yin Hui’s life was endangered by this childbirth, he would rather she had never conceived at all.
Jinzhan’s tears flowed more fiercely as she spoke. Her master had endured tremendous suffering, nearly succumbing to the pain.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, there’s no danger,” Jinzhan reassured.
Wei Luo rose from his chair, feeling a mix of emotions as he looked at the delivery room, which was still in the process of being tidied up. He gently took the baby from his mother (Mrs. Wen), who had cried so loudly before falling asleep. The infant seemed incredibly small, though they claimed he weighed a hefty seven catties, considered quite chubby for a newborn.
Despite the joyous occasion, Wei Luo couldn’t find it in himself to feel happy. The thought of Yin Hui enduring such suffering dampened any sense of joy.
As the delivery room was being cleaned, Mrs. Wen gestured for her son to enter.
Wei Luo nodded in acknowledgment and stepped inside. The room was awash with blood, and Yin Hui lay on the bed, covered by a quilt with only her shoulders exposed. Yinzhan had evidently tidied her appearance, her freshly washed hair tied up neatly atop her head, adorned with a red band bearing auspicious words. However, despite the vibrant color of the band, Yin Hui’s cheeks appeared pale in comparison. Tears welled in her peach blossom eyes upon seeing him.
“Madam, don’t cry. Crying in confinement can easily hurt your eyes,” interjected the midwife who was still present in the room, her tone carrying a subtle hint of admonition.
Wei Luo observed the exchange, noting the tendency of many elders to offer advice with an air of reprimand, despite their good intentions.
Seeing Yin Hui obediently suppress her tears, appearing pitiful as if she wanted to cry but didn’t dare, he gently reassured her, “If you can’t bear it, then you don’t have to bear it. Pay attention later.”
Sitting beside Yin Hui, Wei Luo cast a tender glance her way, his earlier hostility replaced by a rare gentleness.
Yet Yin Hui continued to cry. The pain she endured was unbearable, a stark contrast to the comfort she had known throughout her childhood.
As she cried, Wei Luo wiped away her tears.
The midwife watched hesitantly, wanting to speak several times, but upon seeing the murderous intent in the Third Master’s eyes, she dared not utter a word.
As Yin Hui’s tears finally ceased, her swollen eyes betrayed the toll of her emotional release. Yinzhan handed Wei Luo a warm towel, which he used to soothe her eyes, neck, and face, providing some measure of relief amidst her discomfort.
Yin Hui stared at him intently.
Her husband was undoubtedly handsome, but he was too cold. Yet, the colder he appeared, the more she craved affection.
“Is the child good-looking?” Yin Hui’s tone softened as she began to long for the baby.
Wei Luo signaled for Yinzhan to leave and instructed the wet nurse to bring the baby over.
Upon seeing the child, Yin Hui forgot all about the pain. Her gaze towards the baby was as tender as a gurgling stream in spring.
Wei Luo couldn’t help but think that he had never received such a gaze from her.
When Wu Lang turned one month old, King Yan named his grandson “Heng”.
Yin Hui liked the name and preferred watching Wei Luo and Xiao Heng together.
Wei Luo, teasing Xiao Heng, seemed like a melting piece of ice, and his bright smile brought Yin Hui more comfort than the sun outside.
Previously, Chengxin Hall only housed the husband and wife, but with Xiao Heng around, they finally resembled a complete family.
“Everyone says that Xiao Heng looks like you.”
At night, Yin Hui would snuggle up in Wei Luo’s arms and talk about her son.
Most of the time, Wei Luo simply hummed to indicate he was listening, only intervening if he needed to give an order.
Yin Hui was content with this life. Chengxin Hall was her home, and any gossip from her sister-in-law only caused momentary discomfort. As long as she saw her adorable son and Wei Luo embraced her at night, Yin Hui felt at ease.
Unexpectedly, in July, the father-in-law ordered Wei Luo and his eldest son to go to Jinling to celebrate Emperor Jianlong’s birthday.
Jinling was far away, and it might take three months for Wei Luo to return.
As Yin Hui’s close relative in the Yan Palace and the backbone of Chengxin Hall, Yin Hui was very reluctant. The night before Wei Luo left, she cried again.
Wei Luo held her in his arms as she wept, every tear filled with reluctance.
He gently said, “I’ll be back, why are you crying like this?”
Yin Hui lay on his shoulder, arms tightly around his waist.
Wei Luo smiled quietly. He might not be very important to his father, and while his mother regarded him as her lifeline, she wouldn’t embrace him like this.
Only Madam Yin would be so reluctant to part with him.
Wei Luo lifted her face and kissed her chin.
After over two months away from Pingcheng, Wei Luo often dreamed of her and the child. In those dreams, she looked at him with teary eyes, more captivating than the child.
His Emperor Grandfather gave him and his elder brother singers, but Wei Luo refused them all. Many men were lustful, even his steady elder brother was no exception, but Wei Luo couldn’t accept it.
If a strange woman approached, beautiful or ugly, he would avoid her.
The only exception was Madam Yin.
Finally leaving Jinling, Wei Luo felt like he was coming home.
On the day they returned to Beijing, his second sister-in-law gave birth to a daughter, and it was nearly dusk when Wei Luo saw Yin Hui again in Chengxin Hall.
