Reborn Lady - Chapter 398
Seeing his son’s failure, Wei Yan felt a pang of regret and didn’t want to acknowledge Er Lang as his son. He lamented Er Lang’s lack of skill and felt ashamed of his son’s performance.
Meanwhile, Emperor Yongping paid no heed to Er Lang’s embarrassment and continued racing forward with the group.
Regardless of whether it was hunting or horse racing, Wei Heng consistently outperformed the Emperor’s other grandchildren. Every time Emperor Yongping glanced over, he wore a smile of approval.
In a low voice, Er Lang murmured to Si Lang, “It’s because Da Lang and San Lang didn’t come. Otherwise, my failure wouldn’t be so obvious.”
Si Lang listened silently.
Er Lang had previously harbored dissatisfaction towards Da Lang and San Lang, but since Wu Lang had emerged as the next candidate for Crown Prince, Er lang had redirected his focus towards Wu Lang.
However, Si Lang thought that even if Da Lang and San Lang were present, Wu Lang would not be overshadowed.
In the twelfth lunar month, another heavy snowfall descended upon the capital.
As dusk settled in, the family ventured into the yard after dinner, finding it already covered in a shallow layer of snow.
Snowflakes, as large as goose feathers, swirled with the evening wind, and one landed gently on Wei Ning’s face.
She casually wiped away the water stains left by the melting snowflakes, a sudden idea sparking in her mind. She pulled her two brothers aside, whispering excitedly to them.
As the children grew older, their imaginations flourished with increasingly creative ideas. Yin Hui, unfazed, smiled and gently reminded them, “Go back to sleep early and remember to take your quilts.”
“I wonder what they are planning,” Yin Hui remarked to Wei Luo upon returning to their room.
Wei Luo wasn’t concerned; with Ah Heng around, the three siblings were unlikely to engage in anything out of the ordinary. His primary worry lay with his father’s lingering cold. Growing older, his father had been battling the cold for over ten days, and the cough persisted.
In the backyard of Qianyuan Hall, Emperor Yongping consumed a bowl of soup and medicine while reading a few memorials. Once the effects of the medicine set in, he retired to bed early.
The next morning, before dawn, Emperor Yongping awoke to an unusual quietness, disrupted only by creaking footsteps outside the front hall.
Surprised, Emperor Yongping sat up, alert. The young eunuch on night duty, equally vigilant, immediately went to his bed.
“Your Majesty, how do you feel?” The young eunuch inquired nervously.
“Water,” Emperor Yongping requested.
The young eunuch hurriedly fetched a bowl of warm water.
Emperor Yongping drank it all in one gulp, feeling his throat considerably more comfortable and his body lighter. He sensed that the cold had finally passed.
Instructing the young eunuch to fetch his cloak, Emperor Yongping wore it, signaling to the palace attendants outside to remain quiet. He quietly approached the closed door.
Everywhere he looked, white snow covered the ground, and the sky appeared brighter than usual at dawn.
Squinting slightly, Emperor Yongping observed the three siblings walking back and forth in the open space in front of the hall, gathering snow in the center.
Only these three siblings could walk from the East Hall without being stopped by the guards.
The young people were brimming with energy, and Emperor Yongping realized they might not even feel tired after an hour of work. Having just recovered from a serious illness, he decided to return to catch up on sleep after observing them for a while.
When he awoke again, dawn had already broken outside. The gray-haired Eunuch Hai entered with a smile, saying, “Your Majesty, Wu Lang and the others have prepared a gift for you. Would you like to see it?”
Emperor Yongping changed into fresh clothes and made his way over to where the three siblings were. Finding them still there after finishing their task, Wei Ning trotted over and took hold of his arm, asking, “How are you feeling today, Grandfather?”
“It’s nothing worth worrying about,” Emperor Yongping replied with a dismissive wave of his hand.
After speaking, Emperor Yongping saw the gift the children had prepared for him.
It was a long snow dragon, occupying half of the yard. The dragon’s head was regal, with meticulously carved scales along its body. While the craftsmanship couldn’t rival that of a professional ice sculptor, it still looked decent. What’s more, it was evident that the three children had risen early to honor him. The longer Emperor Yongping observed it, the more satisfied he became.
“Stretch out your hands,” Emperor Yongping said to the three siblings after seeing the gift.
The three siblings exchanged glances but obediently extended their hands.
Having worked diligently since the early morning, the hands of the three siblings were all red from the cold. Emperor Yongping shook his head and turned to Wei Heng, remarking, “Why didn’t you stop them and followed along?” Wei Heng smiled and replied, “As long as the Emperor likes it, we can do it.”
Emperor Yongping let out a small snort and then invited the three siblings to join him for breakfast.
With hearty appetites, Wei Heng and Wei Xun swiftly finished a plate of four steamed buns, prompting Eunuch Hai to set out another plate.
Emperor Yongping suddenly recalled Wei Heng’s childhood fondness for food, remarking with a smile, “Wei Lang, you were a foodie even as a child, always indulging in the most delectable dishes at the banquets every year.”
Wei Heng blushed, puzzled by why he couldn’t recall those moments. How much had he eaten to leave such a lasting impression on the Emperor among his many cousins?
Wu Lang, usually reserved, found himself bashful under the Emperor’s playful gaze but found himself drinking an extra bowl of porridge nonetheless.
“Grandfather, what interesting things did Wu Lang do when he was young, can you tell us more about it?” Wei Ning inquired eagerly.
Addressing Wei Heng as “Big Brother” within their family and as “Wu Lang” in front of Emperor Yongping was customary, aligning with the hierarchical order. After all, the Imperial Grandfather adhered strictly to addressing the two brothers by their respective ranks.
Emperor Yongping’s memory was very good. He reminisced about Wu Lang’s innocence and charm from his younger days, recalling even the ‘Quiet Night Thoughts’ that Wu Lang had recited during that memorable Mid-Autumn Festival.
