Reborn Lady - Chapter 369
Yin Hui hadn’t considered this issue. In her eyes, her eldest son was still a child, so why worry about matters of men and women?
Moreover, not all children from wealthy families needed to prepare such a thing early. Some families were concerned that their children would indulge in worldly pleasures and preferred to arrange reliable maids for them, while others were worried that early exposure to such matters would distract from their studies and enforced strict discipline.
With different perspectives among the elders and varying temperaments among the children, not all of them necessarily looked forward to having their own space.
“Let’s discuss it when they return. I’ll ask Wu Lang and the Third Master,” Yin Hui suggested.
Ji Xianxian chuckled, “Ask the Third Master? He will surely object. He himself is not close to women, and he will likely adhere to the same principles. Ask Wu Lang and Qi Lang instead.”
Yin Hui responded, “Then I have to discuss it with him first, lest I make an arrangement and he is not satisfied.”
Ji Xianxian, unsure of what to make of it, snorted, approached Yin Hui, and said, “Let me tell you, choosing housemaids is also a matter of knowledge. They shouldn’t be too ugly nor too beautiful, and you have to observe their temperament for a while to see if they are honest and conscientious or cunning. For example, among the two I prepared for Si Lang, one of them turned out to be deceitful, pretending to be kind while secretly helping Si Lang deal with Er Lang in secret. It really angered me!”
Later on, Yin Hui listened as Ji Xianxian recounted the incident that occurred with evident satisfaction.
“But thinking about Er Lang and Si Lang reaching marriageable age, and with my daughter-in-law soon to come in, it gives me a headache,” Ji Xianxian added, leaning back on the chair and sighing softly.
How did time pass so quickly? Ji Xianxian couldn’t help but wonder. It felt like just yesterday she was a young girl in her teens, and now she was about to become a mother-in-law in the blink of an eye.
Yin Hui glanced at Ji Xianxian, who was pouting in concern, and couldn’t help but feel that Ji Xianxian was still the same person she had met when she first married into the Yan Palace.
“Could it be that you already have a daughter-in-law candidate?” Yin Hui asked with a smile.
Ji Xianxian shook her round fan and replied, “No, the last time I entered the palace, the Empress told me not to rush to choose. The Emperor might add women to the harem and select a wife for some of his grandchildren after he returns this time.”
Yin Hui pondered this information. Which age was the selection? Ah Heng was also sixteen, turning seventeen next year. The selection would undoubtedly take place next year. Would her father-in-law also choose a daughter-in-law for her?
This thought made Yin Hui feel uneasy. At thirty-one, she still felt that she wasn’t quite old enough to be a mother-in-law.
On August 13th, the Emperor returned to Jinling.
This marked Emperor Yongping’s first personal conquest since ascending the throne, carrying significant importance. The Crown Prince led all civil and military officials out of the city to greet him, while Yin Hui and other female relatives awaited him in the palace.
In the past, when Empress Renxiao was alive, she would lead them to welcome the Emperor at the palace gate. However, this time, it was the four concubines who took the lead.
Emperor Yongping rode a magnificent horse through the city gate, observing the people of Jinling City kneeling on both sides of the main street. Their faces were filled with joy, no longer reflecting the despair of times past. Emperor Yongping’s mood remained uplifted until he reached the palace gate and laid eyes on the four concubines, who led the palace entourage to receive him.
Emperor Yongping reigned on his horse.
These four concubines were all dear to him. Over the past few years, there would always be another figure standing alongside the four concubines.
Though Empress Renxiao had been gone for three years, Emperor Yongping had indeed returned to a semblance of normalcy. Yet, there were still moments when he would think of his empress, feeling a lingering discomfort.
After a brief moment of sadness, Emperor Yongping dismounted from his horse and signaled for the four concubines, his daughters-in-law, and daughters to rise.
During this process, Emperor Yongping’s gaze swept over his female relatives, no longer surprised by Concubine Li’s attire. He noticed that the five daughters-in-law were all dressed in old clothes from previous years, yet they were coordinated perfectly. Emperor Yongping was highly satisfied.
Yin Hui, however, paid little attention to her father-in-law’s presence. Instead, she bypassed Wei Luo entirely, directing her gaze straight to the Emperor’s grandchildren. With remarkable accuracy, her eyes landed on her son, who had been eagerly awaiting her smiling face. The sixteen-year-old boy stood tall, his face tanned from the sun. As he smiled, a few small white teeth were revealed.
Yin Hui couldn’t help but laugh, reassuring herself that everything was fine. Her son wasn’t as tanned as his father when he returned from the south.
Meanwhile, Wei Luo stood beside her son. As Emperor Yongping conversed with the four concubines, Wei Luo took the opportunity to observe Yin Hui. After observing for a while, he noticed her smiling at their son, completely forgetting about her husband.
Wei Luo then turned his attention to his second son and daughter, but they only had eyes for their elder brother. One smiled reservedly, while the other waved her hand in greeting.
Just as Wei Luo was about to avert his gaze, Yin Hui finally looked at him. He pursed his lips and looked ahead.
Yin Hui saw a cold expression that could be felt even with closed eyes!
Sure enough, her son’s smiling face was more beautiful.
Walking inside, Wei Heng finally reached his mother and younger siblings, calling each of them by name.
“Brother is so tall,” Wei Ning remarked, raising his head.
Wei Heng chuckled and replied, “Ning Ning has also grown taller, as well as Ah Xun.” He patted his brother and sister on the shoulder respectively.
Both Wei Xun and Wei Ning laughed. The siblings shared Yin Hui’s eyes, and their smiles only enhanced their resemblance.
Wei Heng felt a twinge of envy; he wished he had the same eyes as his younger siblings.
As the thought crossed his mind, a shadow fell upon him. Wei Heng raised his head, his smile fading instantly as he respectfully addressed, “Father.”
Wei Luo turned to Yin Hui, saying, “We have to attend the celebration banquet.”
With that, he took away his eldest son expressionlessly.
