Reborn Lady - Chapter 364
While Wei Luo was occupied familiarizing himself with the official affairs of the Ministry of Finance, Yin Hui was in Jinling City, ordering a crested gold hairpin inlaid with rubies from the most renowned jewelry store.
The Jewelry House placed great importance on Princess Shu’s order, so they expedited the creation of the hairpin and sent it over in early July.
After inspecting it, Yin Hui was very pleased and instructed Yingchun to escort the female shopkeeper out.
Just as the female shopkeeper stepped out of the main room, Wei Ning entered.
“Mother, is this your new jewelry?” Seven-year-old Wei Ning picked up the gold hairpin from the box, admiring it with a smile.
Yin Hui explained, “In a few days, your eldest sister will be getting married. This is the accessory that mother has prepared for her.”
Wei Mei was the eldest daughter of the Crown Prince and the first granddaughter of the Emperor.
Regardless of her identity, Wei Mei possessed a gentle temperament and cared deeply for her younger siblings. Yin Hui observed her niece’s growth from a four or five-year-old child to a seventeen-year-old young woman, and her affection for her was unique. Therefore, when it came to this gift, Yin Hui truly put considerable thought into it. If it were any of her other nieces getting married, she might have simply chosen an expensive piece of jewelry from the storeroom and sent it over with dignity.
Upon hearing this, Wei Ning returned the golden hairpin to its box, then nestled into his mother’s arms, acting coquettishly. “Mother, do I have to get married when I grow up?”
Yin Hui gently stroked her daughter’s head and replied with a smile, “Yes, but you still have ten years to go, Ning Ning. There’s no need to worry.”
Remembering Wei Ying, Yin Hui silently sighed in her heart.
Wei Ying didn’t desire marriage; she wanted to remain single. However, due to societal norms, she couldn’t voice her feelings openly. Thus, over the past two years, Wei Ying had ventured outside with a group of guards to gauge public sentiment. However, with Wei Mei’s marriage, Yin Hui was certain Wei Ying would return.
Speaking softly to her daughter, Yin Hui said, “When Ning Ning meets a man she likes, she may want to marry. But if you haven’t found someone you like, then there’s no need to rush into marriage.”
Upon hearing this, Wei Ning seemed reassured. She blinked and suddenly asked, “Did Mother get married to Father because she liked him?”
A deeper smile lit up in Yin Hui’s eyes.
She hadn’t married Wei Luo out of affection but rather because her father-in-law required financial assistance from the Yin family.
It was a truth Yin Hui wouldn’t tell her daughter. She knew that as her daughter grew older and gained understanding, she would eventually come to realize it.
“Yes, Mother likes Father very much,” Yin Hui coaxed her daughter.
Wei Ning chuckled, as if she had uncovered a secret between her parents.
In the evening, after dinner, Wei Luo went through the children’s homework as usual. The only change from before his southern expedition was that now Wei Ning was also subject to his inspection.
Being young and more playful, Wei Ning studied alone at home without her siblings to compare with. Consequently, she felt no pressure and often stumbled over the lessons learned that day. If it were her two elder brothers, they would have hung their heads in shame if they recited in such a manner. However, Wei Ning was quite bold and unafraid of her serious father.
Seeing her father’s frown deepening, Wei Ning suddenly darted over and whispered, “Father, spare me today. I’ll tell you a secret.”
Wei Luo glanced at his daughter, then at his wife sitting nearby and his two sons waiting for them to finish. Deciding to step outside with his daughter, he took her to the corridor.
Once there, Wei Luo asked his daughter, “What’s the secret?”
Wei Ning motioned for her father to sit beside her and leaned in close to whisper in his ear, “Today, Mother told me that she likes you very much.”
Wei Luo raised an eyebrow slightly, then lowered his gaze, asking lightly, “Why did your mother bring this up?”
Wei Ning recounted the conversation she had with her mother.
Wei Luo glanced back at the main room and said nonchalantly, “I’ll let it slide today. But if you haven’t memorized it by tomorrow night, I’ll punish you by making you copy books.”
Wei Ning was content and happily urged her brothers to return to their room together.
Yin Hui also stepped out and followed Wei Luo to the backyard. She asked curiously, “What secret did Ning Ning tell you?”
Wei Luo glanced at the maid carrying the lamp ahead and replied, “Go back to the room, and I’ll tell you.”
Once they were in the inner room, the couple washed up. Wei Luo quickly settled against the head of the bed and when Yin Hui joined him, he set down his book and fixed his gaze on her face.
Yin Hui chided him, “Why are you looking at me like that? It seems like I’ve made some mistake.”
Wei Luo pulled her into his arms, meeting her eyes. “You lied in front of Ning Ning.”
Yin Hui raised her eyebrows. “What lie?”
Wei Luo stated plainly, “You married me because you liked me so much?”
Only then did Yin Hui realize what her daughter had whispered to Wei Luo. Seeing Wei Luo this way, her eyes flickered. She gently tugged at his neckline and said, “Although we hadn’t met before our marriage, I caught a glimpse of you once from a distance. When I saw you, I fell in love. How could that be considered a lie?”
Wei Luo smiled and asked, “Really? When and where did you see me from afar?”
Of course, Yin Hui had never actually seen Wei Luo before, but as the grandson of the Emperor, he must have been out of the Yan Palace at some point.
Yin Hui thought for a moment and improvised in a low voice, “I can’t quite recall which autumn it was. I remember I was out shopping on the street when I heard that your father was going hunting. Everyone rushed out to watch, and I happened to be standing on the side of the street. That’s when I saw you and your entourage. There were three sons in total, and judging by your age, I could tell that the youngest and most handsome one was you.”
She added some flattering remarks, feeling a bit slippery as she did so.
Wei Luo was quite certain that Yin Hui was making up a story, but he acknowledged her cleverness in recalling his father’s fondness for autumn hunting and the fact that the three eldest grandsons had indeed accompanied him on such expeditions.
Touching her lips with his fingertips, Wei Luo pulled her closer and kissed her.
It didn’t matter whether they started with affection or not; what truly mattered were the years they spent together after marriage, including the present moment.
