Reborn Lady - Chapter 359
Watching the father and son walk away slowly, Wei Yan looked at the Crown Prince and said enviously, “This time, the Third Brother has made great achievements; our father will definitely reward him heavily.”
The Crown Prince smiled and said, “Of course, you should be rewarded for your meritorious service. The Second Brother should also do well in the future. As an older brother, don’t be overwhelmed by the Third Brother.” Wei Yan’s lips moved, and he really wanted to say, “You, the Elder Brother, don’t see any limelight,” but considering the status of the Crown Prince, he endured it, feeling only ashamed.
In Qianyuan Hall, Wei Luo helped Emperor Yongping to sit on a couch. Eunuch Hai brought sober tea, which Wei Luo fed to his father. Eunuch Hai then brought a towel, and Wei Luo used his own hands to wipe his father’s face.
When Emperor Yongping was about to vomit, Wei Luo promptly grabbed the spittoon that Eunuch Hai had brought in advance, holding it in one hand while supporting the Emperor with the other.
Emperor Yongping vomited, then went to the clean room to rinse his mouth, drank tea, and wiped his face, gradually sobering up.
After changing his clothes, Emperor Yongping leaned on the dragon couch and looked at his son sitting beside the bed. He smiled and said, “It’s so hot in that place, and you’re so tanned. I’m afraid Xiao Ning wouldn’t recognize you.”
Yang Jingzhong and others had been training soldiers all year round, and they were already tanned. His son had worked as a civil servant for the first three years, and his face had returned to the fairness of his youth. Unexpectedly, after spending a year in the south, his tan was even worse than when he followed his father to defeat Wei Ang – it was almost black.
As Emperor Yongping thought, he pulled up his son’s sleeves, opened his collar, and peered inside. To his surprise, his son’s shoulders, chest, and abdomen were about to turn wheat yellow from the tan.
Wei Luo explained, “The sun was strong over there, and the winter was about the same as the spring in Jinling.”
During breaks, the soldiers liked to go shirtless, and Wei Luo was no exception, so his shoulders and face were tanned together.
Emperor Yongping squeezed his son’s arm tighter, feeling very satisfied, and suddenly said, “Tell me about the situation there.”
This was the time to discuss serious matters.
Wei Luo had nothing to hide and recounted all his experiences in the former Yu Kingdom and now the Jiaozhi Province. He explained that the people there were very poor, with few able to read and write. He also mentioned the difficulty in understanding the local dialect for those from the state of Wei. Furthermore, he described the mountainous and forested terrain, which made it inconvenient to open up wasteland for farming. Additionally, there were natural barriers such as dangerous mountains, bad water, swamps, and tidal flats, making the region easy to defend but difficult to get attacked
The more Emperor Yongping listened, the more he frowned. He looked at his son and asked, “What do you mean?”
Wei Luo replied, “I feel that people who don’t belong to our clan must have different intentions, and sooner or later conflicts will arise. It’s not worth the father’s effort to govern there.”
Fighting could be won, but it was exceedingly difficult to completely convince the people there to submit to the Central Plains. Attempting language education alone was proving challenging. It seemed more practical to accept tribute rather than pursuing futile efforts.
Emperor Yongping thought he had seized a valuable opportunity, but to his dismay, it turned out to be like a chicken rib—something too insignificant to discard yet lacking in substantial taste.
He believed that it was this concern that deterred previous dynasties from occupying that region.
However, this battle was not without its merits. It not only elevated the prestige of the Great Wei but also toughened the Southern Army.
Emperor Yongping was still happy, patted Wei Luo on the shoulder, and asked, “You have made great achievements this time, what reward do you want?” Feeling that his son lacked nothing, Emperor Yongping decided to inquire if there was anything his son desired.
Wei Luo didn’t ask for anything, stating, “It’s the duty of the son to share the worries of the Emperor Father.”
Emperor Yongping wasn’t surprised by this stern response. He looked at his son again and waved his hand, saying, “Forget it, go and see your mother and the Empress.”
Wei Luo bowed and bid farewell.
After leaving Qianyuan Hall, Wei Luo first went to Kunning Hall to greet Empress Xu.
Empress Xu, aware of his tiring journey, showed concern for him but didn’t detain him for too long. Wei Luo then went to Xianfu Hall to visit his biological mother, Concubine Shun.
Concubine Shun, seeing her son so tanned, shed tears in distress and asked if he was injured. But Wei Luo remained silent.
Unable to inspect her son’s body closely, Concubine Shun urged him to return home quickly after a few words.
As Wei Luo was about to leave the palace, Emperor Yongping sent a eunuch to chase after him, followed by several young eunuchs carrying boxes and cages.
These were the rewards that Emperor Yongping bestowed upon his son: a box of gold, two boxes of silk and satin, and a box of whitening and nourishing cream.
Wei Luo took another glance at the box containing the whitening and nourishing cream, then looked at his hands. He turned around and gave thanks in the direction of Qianyuan Hall.
After leaving the palace gate, the young eunuchs placed Emperor Yongping’s rewards onto the carriage, and Wei Luo climbed back in.
It was already May, and Jinling was warm again. Wei Luo could smell sweat throughout the journey, the lingering scent of alcohol from toasting, and even the unpleasant odor from Emperor Yongping’s vomiting.
Opening the curtains, Wei Luo welcomed a rush of afternoon heat, but having acclimated to the warmth in the Yu Kingdom, this heat was nothing.
As they passed by roadside willow trees, Wei Luo silently counted, finding the carriage’s pace frustratingly slow.
“Hurry up and drive the carriage.”
When His Highness Prince Shu urged him from within the carriage, the coachman heeded the command and swiftly flicked the whip, prompting the carriage to accelerate.
Inside the Shu Mansion, Yin Hui and the children had already finished lunch, but as Wei Luo still hadn’t returned, Yin Hui advised the three siblings to take a rest first.
Thirteen-year-old Wei Heng was reluctant to leave and insisted on waiting.
Eleven-year-old Wei Xun also hesitated to leave.
Seven-year-old Wei Ning, naturally, insisted on waiting for her father.
“Mother, we’re not sleepy,” Wei Ning said as she sat next to her mother with a fan, smiling as she fanned her.
Yin Hui looked at the eager expressions of her children and explained, “There is a celebration banquet in the palace, and your father may not be back until dusk.”
The three siblings exchanged glances but remained unmoved.
Yin Hui, seeing their determination, arranged for her sons to rest in their father’s bed, while she took her daughter to the backyard.
Despite their anticipation, the summer heat soon overwhelmed them, and Wei Ning fell asleep first, followed by Yin Hui as she watched her daughter’s peaceful sleeping face.
In the room, an ice tripod emitted a refreshing coolness.
After some time had passed, Yin Hui heard the sound of water, indicating the maids were carrying water to the bathroom.
Yin Hui suddenly woke up.
Suddenly alert, Yin Hui quietly put on her shoes, tied her hair back loosely with a headband, threw on her outer clothes, and quietly slipped out of the room.
Yingchun and Liangxia had retreated outside the main room and were about to close the door when they saw Princess Shu. The two maids smiled and pointed to the bathroom.
Yin Hui’s heart began to pound faster and faster; Wei Luo had truly returned.
Unable to contain her excitement, she couldn’t help but walk towards the bathroom.
Just as Wei Luo walked behind the screen and began to remove his stinky robe, he suddenly heard the sound of the door opening. With icy eyes, he turned his gaze towards the door, alert and cautious. Because Wei Luo saw his sleeping wife and daughter, he initially assumed it was some bold servant girl entering the room.
Then, as he looked closer, Wei Luo saw his wife, her face still flushed with sleepiness, and recognized her even through the screen.
Pausing for a moment, Wei Luo lowered his eyes and continued to undress.
Yin Hui stood stunned at the door. The figure behind the screen was undoubtedly Wei Luo, but something seemed off about the color.
However, how could the maids allow a strange man into the room?
Slowly, Yin Hui walked towards the screen.
As she drew closer, she could see more clearly. She watched as he picked up a bucket of water with his back turned towards her and poured it over his head.
The sound of splashing water startled Yin Hui, causing her to freeze momentarily. Her gaze was fixed on him, observing his broad and muscular back, and his slender yet powerful arms.
She continued to watch until Wei Luo picked up the bucket and poured it over himself again, walking towards her dripping wet.
Yin Hui’s face burned with embarrassment. Before Wei Luo could completely emerge from behind the screen, she turned and fled.
Her daughter was still sleeping nearby, and she couldn’t tolerate any inappropriate behavior from him.
