Reborn Lady - Chapter 355
Emperor Yongping then asked Yin Yong, “Do you know any herbs that can cure miasma?”
Yin Yong replied, “There is a herb that can prevent miasma, but it is not necessarily effective. It is better than nothing, and the easiest way is to avoid the scorching heat where miasma is most likely to occur.”
Emperor Yongping continued to inquire about some of the territory of the Yu Kingdom from Yin Yong and then called forth the advisor, the Minister of War, and a group of generals.
In the end, Emperor Yongping decided to send 50,000 forbidden troops to reinforce the southwestern border to test the strength of the Yu Kingdom. He instructed them to return back as soon as summer arrived, prohibiting any engagement with the Yu Kingdom. The Imperial Court made detailed preparations for the decisive battle in July.
The southward march of the army was delayed, but Wei Luo, Yang Jingzhong and his son, and Feng Teng still had to accompany the 50,000 forbidden troops to the southwestern border first. There, they would study the battle strategy with the local general Mu Cheng and be prepared to report to the court at any time.
Yin Yong, being too old to accompany Wei Luo, recommended two local talents instead. One was a guide who was intimately familiar with the territory of the Yu Kingdom, and the other was a renowned doctor skilled in treating common local diseases. These individuals, motivated by their loyalty to the court rather than any personal ties with Yin Yong, would surely devote their utmost efforts. After all, failure to do so could result in dire consequences for themselves and their families.
Of course, Yin Yong’s recommendation wasn’t to harm them. As long as these individuals wholeheartedly aided his grandson-in-law, they would be duly rewarded later on, ensuring mutual benefit for all parties involved.
Ultimately, Yin Yong’s actions were not driven by a desire for personal recognition from Emperor Yongping or to seek credit. It was a matter of protecting his family’s welfare. The risk of underestimating the enemy or succumbing to the plague, which might leave his granddaughter widowed and his three grand-grandchildren orphaned, was too great to ignore.
Thanks to the old man’s intervention, Yin Hui became more aware of the dangers lurking in the battle ahead. Compared to the threat of swords, the invisible and insidious miasma posed a far greater danger.
Yin Hui’s worry for Wei Luo intensified as she imagined the dire consequences of him contracting miasma. The ineffective yellowish herb would be of little use, leaving him lying there, helpless and awaiting his fate.
In the dead of night, Wei Luo lightly patted Yin Hui on the shoulder and said, “If your grandpa didn’t help me, then you should be worried. He’s done so much for me today, even arranging for a guide and a renowned doctor to assist me. What’s there to worry about?”
Yin Hui remained silent, simply embracing him tightly.
Some people regret wanting him to aspire for titles, but they fail to realize that Wei Luo was destined for leadership and responsibility. He couldn’t be sheltered and pampered his whole life.
“Aren’t you afraid?” Yin Hui suddenly asked.
Wei Yan, Prince Chu, had worn himself out inspecting dams along the Yangtze River, so he kept complaining. Wei Luo had faced deadly situations countless times on the battlefield. Wasn’t he truly afraid? Why had he never complained?
Wei Luo met her gaze and replied, “I must do it, so why should I be afraid?”
When an enemy country invaded, if everyone succumbed to fear, the nation would be destroyed. Even ordinary people’s sons bravely took up arms to defend their families and country. As the son of the Emperor, with martial skills far surpassing the common folk, he should lead his soldiers into battle, protecting his home, his country, and the countless lives within.
“Just take care of yourself…”
“Don’t worry about me.”
As soon as he opened his mouth, Yin Hui said the rest for him. She knew his few catchphrases by heart.
Yin Hui had been married to him for two lifetimes, and it was rare to see him smile so brightly.
He was heading to an unfamiliar, complicated, and dangerous battlefield, yet his smile remained radiant.
Among her father-in-law’s five sons, he might have been considered the least intelligent.
However, the more he exhibited such demeanor, the more reluctant Yin Hui felt.
How could a man brave enough to defend his family and country truly be cold-blooded?
With her face pressed against his chest, Yin Hui could hear the strong heartbeat that belonged to him alone. The reassuring rhythm of blood flowing through his body put her at ease.
Before dawn the next day, Yin Hui and Wei Luo rose together, observing him as he donned his battle armor and devoured two meatloafs in a few bites, devoid of the dignified demeanor expected of the Third Master of the Yan Palace and His Highness Prince Shu.
Yin Hui recalled the times when Wei Luo took the children to tend to the garden. This man truly seemed at home in any attire, yet his cold and handsome countenance remained unchanged.
Wei Luo, too, kept stealing glances at her. However, time was running out, and despite his reluctance, he couldn’t afford to delay any further.
Once he had finished eating, Wei Luo prepared to depart.
Yin Hui accompanied him all the way to the gates of the Shu Mansion, where his white-hoofed horse awaited.
Back at the Yan Palace, she could only see him off to the inner city gate of the palace, watching from afar as he mounted his horse across a wide moat. But this day, however, she finally stood beside the white-hoofed hose, stroking its flank with one hand as she watched him mount.
“Go back,” Wei Luo commanded, gripping the reins tightly, unable to meet her gaze.
Yin Hui nodded, releasing her hand and stepping back.
As Wei Luo glanced at her from the corner of his eye, he suddenly spurred the horse into a gallop.
When turning the corner, the familiar figure momentarily paused in front of the mansion. Wei Luo glanced over, but unfortunately, the white-hoofed horse ran too fast, and the high wall of the nearby mansion quickly replaced her in his line of sight.
Wei Luo smiled and directed his gaze forward.
