Reborn Lady - Chapter 351
In the palace, on the first night back in Beijing, Emperor Yongping naturally rested in Empress Xu’s Kunning Hall.
As he recounted his experiences along the way, Emperor Yongping was in high spirits, alternating between happiness and anger, eager to chat with Empress Xu whenever something came to mind.
Empress Xu listened with a smile, occasionally responding with a few words.
“How are Da Lang and the others doing?” She inquired with a smile after Emperor Yongping listed a circle of officials. As a grandmother, she was naturally very concerned about the performance of her grandchildren.
Emperor Yongping snorted. “Er Lang has been spoiled by his parents, very indulgent and unlikely to achieve great things in the future. As for Si Lang, his health is not good, so he may continue to struggle in this life.”
Recognizing the differences among the dragon’s sons, let alone the grandsons and granddaughters, Emperor Yongping expressed disappointment but not excessive anger. Despite their shortcomings, he acknowledged that there were still positive qualities in his grandchildren, and not all hope was lost.
Emperor Yongping then praised Da Lang.
Although San Lang had some shortcomings, he excelled in martial arts—a trait Emperor Yongping admired in his descendants. If San Lang could match his own prowess, he would be satisfied.
Furthermore, Emperor Yongping offered simple praise for Xiao Heng, “Despite being the youngest, Wu Lang is diligent and unselective, much like the Third Son.”
He didn’t praise Xiao Heng as much as San Lang, let alone comparing him to Da Lang.
Empress Xu teased, “You always exaggerate San Lang’s virtues with me. Then, when you go to Sister Li, you’ll praise Er Lang and Si Lang in front of her. After that, you will go to Sister Shun to praise Wu lang. Am I wrong?”
Emperor Yongping laughed heartily, holding Empress Xu’s hand and said, “My dear, after all these years, do I still need to resort to such tactics to make you happy?”
“I just love hearing you coax me,” Empress Xu replied with a smile.
Emperor Yongping turned to look at the deepening wrinkles in the corners of Empress Xu’s eyes, holding her hand with emotion. “During this recent trip to Pingcheng, I couldn’t help but reminisce about our earlier visit. Back then, the city walls were crumbling, and the north wind swept yellow sand across the sky. I was worried about how you would cope, but you never complained. You stood by my side and worked tirelessly.”
Empress Xu’s eyes grew warm as she recalled the details of Pingcheng with her husband when they were young. Leaning into his arms, she said, “I actually prefer Pingcheng. It feels more like home. Together, we will transform Pingcheng little by little. When Pingcheng was besieged that year, it felt like thieves were coming to rob our home. At that time, I was prepared to face it with you…”
Emperor Yongping hugged her tightly. “It’s over now, all over. Pingcheng is being rebuilt, and as soon as it’s finished, we’ll move the capital there. The new palace will be expanded on the old site.”
Empress Xu looked forward eagerly.
“How long will it take? I want to go back and see it now.”
“I wanted to take you there this year too, but I wouldn’t be rest assured without you here. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely take you there next time I patrol the border. You can stay in Pingcheng for a few months, and I’ll pick you up when I return,” Emperor Yongping assured her.
Empress Xu smiled. “I’ll remember that, and you better not play any tricks.”
“No tricks, I promise,” Emperor Yongping replied with a smile. “When have I ever lied to you?”
The next day, Emperor Yongping resumed his duties of governing, and the Crown Prince returned all power to him.
After the court session, Emperor Yongping summoned the Crown Prince and scrutinized him, furrowing his brow as he remarked, “State affairs are weighty matters. Why do you seem to be getting fatter instead of thinner?”
The Crown Prince felt truly aggrieved. Indeed, state affairs were burdensome, and he found himself leaving early and returning late each day. The more exhausted he became, the hungrier he felt, and he often resorted to eating to alleviate his stress or lift his spirits.
However, as he looked at his father’s robust physique compared to his own, the Crown Prince realized that such excuses held no weight. Thus, he could only listen silently to his father’s words.
Emperor Yongping observed his son’s double chin with disappointment. “You simply cannot endure hardships,” he remarked with a shake of his head.
Recalling how he personally taught his eldest son martial arts when he was young, Emperor Yongping couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret. Despite lacking natural talent in martial arts, the Crown Prince’s inability to persevere through physical challenges was evident. Witnessing Empress Xu’s concerned expression, Emperor Yongping couldn’t bring himself to push his son too hard.
Fortunately, Da Lang and San Lang inherited their martial arts talents from both the Xu and Yongping families, and they excelled in their training.
After the Crown Prince resigned, Emperor Yongping reviewed the essays submitted by his grandsons. Having already seen them during their travels, he found it sufficient to read the essays of Er Lang, San Lang, and Si Lang, and compare them with those of Da Lang and Wu Lang.
Da Lang’s essay focused on the evaluation of officials, while Wu Lang’s focused on people’s livelihood. Both grandsons exhibited strong writing skills, but Da Lang, at sixteen, had received extensive teachings from his tutor, whereas Wu Lang, at eleven, likely hadn’t yet learned about agricultural systems.
After a final reading, Emperor Yongping placed the five essays into a separate box, with no intention of sharing them with others.
At noon, Emperor Yongping visited the study hall once again. In the sleeping quarter, Da Lang, San Lang, and Liu Lang gathered together, while Er Lang and Si Lang kept to themselves, and Qi Lang and Ba Lang stayed with Wu Lang as usual.
Er Lang disliked them, so Si Lang reluctantly accompanied him, while Da Lang and Wu Lang emerged as the two leaders among the brothers.
Emperor Yongping silently observed his two grandsons before leaving.
