Reborn Lady - Chapter 349
With her father-in-law in power, Wei Luo’s treatment was basically the same.
Yin Hui didn’t know how the Crown Prince would treat these cousins when he succeeded to the throne, and she didn’t dare to think about it.
In fact, it was useless to think about it; let alone her, Wei Luo couldn’t do anything—thunder, rain, and dew were all due to the monarch’s grace.
Yin Hui only hoped that the Crown Prince would not be too ruthless in the future because her father-in-law did not give the four brothers much power, and he would not just come to the frontier at every turn.
During the period when Emperor Yongping was not in the capital, the Crown Prince was in charge of the court, but nothing major happened, and everything was in order.
On the ninth day of August, the first exam of the year began during the Qiuwei season.
Yin Hui’s younger brother, Yin Lang, also participated this autumn.
Twenty-four-year-old Yin Lang, having built a solid foundation in his childhood and benefiting from the teachings of a renowned teacher personally hired by Yin Yong, dedicated himself to diligent study upon arriving in Beijing. After two years of rigorous effort, he achieved the status of a scholar the previous year. This year, he harbored no grand expectations for the examination, viewing it merely as an opportunity to gain further experience. Consequently, Yin Lang maintained a relaxed mindset. Having successfully passed the examination for three consecutive years, he looked forward to spending the autumn leisurely with his wife and children, accompanying the elderly.
The list was set to be released in September, yet prior to its publication, Crown Prince Wei Yang was already aware of the outcome. He visited Empress Xu and brought up Yin Lang’s results from the Qiuwei examination, noting his absence from the list.
Empress Xu remarked, “Yin Lang began his studies in commerce from a young age, only later transitioning to pursue the Imperial Examinations. It’s not uncommon to face failure initially.”
Upon obtaining official positions, they realized the lack of recognition and distanced themselves from it. However, Mr. Yin later encouraged Yin Lang to continue his studies, indicating their lingering desire for official status. If the Emperor were present, he might extend grace to the Yin family, allowing Yin Lang to participate in next year’s examination and potentially granting him an official position upon achieving Jinshi status.
Empress Xu remarked, “Yin Lang has been immersed in business since childhood, only turning to the Imperial Examination halfway through. It’s not uncommon to stumble on the first attempt.”
Upon securing official positions, they realized their lack of renown and shunned it. However, Mr. Yin later urged Yin Lang to resume his studies, revealing their lingering desire for officialdom. If the Emperor were present, would he grant the Yin family a favor, permitting Yin Lang to sit the exam next year? He could bestow him a Jinshi title, legitimizing his official status.
It seemed Yin Lang pursued the Imperial Examination to fulfill aspirations for respectability, leaving no room for excuses. The Emperor might even extend a helping hand to them.
If he didn’t interfere in anything and let Yin Lang fail the ranking, would the Emperor misunderstand that he didn’t want the relatives of the Third Brother’s side to be successful?
Wei Yang, initially elated to assume the role of a Crown Prince, soon discovered the burden it entailed. It felt as if his father’s scrutiny loomed over every decision, leaving him constantly cautious.
Empress Xu glanced at her son, questioning softly, “If Yin Lang were your brother-in-law or a concubine’s kin, what action would you take?”
Wei Yang replied, “It hinges on their competence. Blame cannot be laid on me.”
Empress Xu fell silent, and Wei Yang comprehended her unspoken message.
Shortly after the list got released, Yin Hui dispatched someone to check it, but despite three thorough searches, he couldn’t find Yin Lang.
Yin Yong, still anxious about the situation, dispatched someone to inform him, but their efforts were in vain.
Yin Hui escorted Xiao Ning back to her natal family’s mansion.
Upon seeing his sister, Yin Lang smiled sheepishly, “I’m sorry to have caused you worry for nothing.”
Yin Hui shot him a look and replied, “What nonsense are you spouting? This is your first time participating in Qiuwei. Naturally, your sister would rejoice in your success. If you don’t succeed, strive harder next time. Stop being so formal with me.”
Yin Lang chuckled in response.
Later that evening, Jiang Weijiao paid a special visit to the mansion, offering words of encouragement to Yin Lang from someone who had been in his position before. Jiang Weijiao had successfully passed the Qiuwei examination twice.
Yin Lang expressed his sincere gratitude.
Although he harbored no strong sentiments towards Yin Rong, Yin Lang admired Jiang Weijiao’s noble character. He considered Jiang Weijiao a friend rather than just his brother-in-law.
Wei Luo, on the other hand, remained indifferent to the matter. If Yin Lang were seriously ill, Wei Luo would still pay him a visit. While Qiuwei presented a setback, Wei Luo felt no obligation to tend to his wife’s adopted brother-in-law. Nevertheless, he still offered comfort to Yin Hui, advising her not to fret.
Unexpectedly, two days later, as Wei Luo entered the palace to report a case to the Crown Prince, after completing the business, the Crown Prince took the initiative to discuss Yin Lang’s situation with her. He shared the examiner’s comments on Yin Lang’s performance, allowing Wei Luo to pass on areas of improvement for Yin Lang in the future.
As the Crown Prince oversees the affairs of the country, any interactions he had with courtiers were documented by a historian. The conversation between the Crown Prince and Wei Luo undoubtedly portrayed him in the role of a caring elder brother.
Wei Hao expressed gratitude to the prince on behalf of Yin Lang.
The prince smiled and said, “You can retreat.”
Wei Luo bowed and took his leave.
Now that the Crown Prince had shown special consideration for Yin Lang, upon emerging from the Ministry of Punishment at dusk, Wei Luo also made his way to the Yin Mansion.
Yin Yong and Yin Lang hurried out to meet him.
Once they gathered in the hall, Wei Luo conveyed the Crown Prince’s intentions to Yin Lang.
Yin Lang was grateful yet ashamed. After all, he had failed to pass the exam, indirectly causing Wei Luo to lose face in front of the Crown Prince. If Wei Luo had been narrow-minded, blaming his wife and her brother would have been normal, only serving to make him more embarrassed.
Wei Luo offered a few words of consolation. As it was getting late, he departed after having tea.
Yin Yong and his grandson escorted him out.
Watching Wei Luo ride away on horseback, Yin Yong stroked his beard.
The prince was adept at preserving dignity.
