Reborn Lady - Chapter 342
After the Lantern Festival, Emperor Yongping announced in court his intention to patrol the border. Since then, preparations began throughout the capital and beyond. Among those making preparations was Yin Hui, who took it upon herself to pack Xiao Heng’s belongings.
Drawing on her memories of her grandfather’s business trips, Yin Hui recalled observing her Uncle De assisting in packing his bags. Though she was just young then, her youthful observations left an impression. Now, as a mother, she felt a renewed sense of responsibility and thought that it wasn’t enough. She even entertained the notion of seeking a legendary treasure rumored to hold everything one might need, yet remain compact for easy transport, for her son.
Yin Hui meticulously crafted a list of essentials, seeking validation from her husband, Wei Luo, who accompanied her to the study to check.
When they arrived at the study, he picked up a pen, dipped in ink, and ticked three things on the list, namely clothes, shoes and socks, medicine box, and toiletries.
“Other things will be handled by the palace,” he assured her.
However, Yin Hui pursed her lips, grabbed the pen and ticked snacks.
“Xiao Heng is growing up, and he’s prone to getting hungry easily,” she argued.
Wei Luo agreed with her,”Then prepare some dried meat and nuts, but not too much.”
Yin Hui nodded in satisfaction, grateful for her husband’s understanding. Their shared concern for their son’s well-being strengthened their resolve to ensure his comfort during his absence.
Yin Hui nodded, glanced at the list, and muttered to herself, “Father will be away for half a year. I need to prepare a few sets of bigger clothes for Xiao Heng.”
Wei Luo sat beside her, observing as Yin Hui contemplated how many sets of clothes to prepare.
Reflecting on the moment, Wei Luo recalled their early days of marriage. In the first year, during the fall, when he, his elder brother, and second brother were set to accompany their father on a border inspection, she had similarly made a list. Glancing at it briefly, Wei Luo decided against using it; An Shun’er had already handled his luggage arrangements, rendering her list unnecessary.
Then, in the autumn of their second year of marriage, when he and his eldest brother’s family were preparing to go to Jinling for the late Emperor’s birthday, Yin Hui offered to assist with packing. However, he declined her offer, and she respected his decision, choosing not to intervene further.
When Wei Luo returned from Jinling, she appeared different, no longer as attentive to him as she had been before.
Seeing how much she was worrying about her son now, Wei Luo actually missed the time when she was that way with him before.
Yin Hui was taken aback as Wei Luo abruptly grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his embrace.
She cast a suspicious glance at him.
Without uttering a word, Wei Luo gently grasped the back of her head and kissed her.
Yin Hui blinked, feeling bewildered. If he had harbored such intentions earlier, his actions and demeanor would have likely hinted at it beforehand. They had just been discussing what to pack for their child moments ago, so why had his thoughts suddenly shifted in this direction?
However, once this kind of intimacy began, Yin Hui soon found herself forgetting about her son, her attention solely focused on the Prince, her husband, who, despite being in his early thirties, had grown even more robust and imposing in her eyes.
A twenty-year-old man may still be considered young, but a thirty-year-old man was truly mature, akin to a tree that may not grow taller, yet became increasingly lush and sturdy with each passing year.
Men vary in their paths to flourishing. Some may gradually gain weight over time, while others become increasingly robust and strong.
Wei Luo was naturally the latter.
Yin Hui found the moments when Wei Luo effortlessly embraced her most enjoyable. The display of strength by Wei Luo during those moments instilled in her a sense of his omnipotence and utmost reliability.
In March, Wen Ruyue got married.
She was now Wei Luo’s nominal younger sister, so Yin Hui and Wei Luo asked her to hold the wedding in the Shu Mansion.
The banquet at the Shu Mansion was not particularly lively, but the presence of all the Emperor’s relatives and nobles lent it a sense of prestige greater than any other extravagant celebration.
When the auspicious moment arrived, the groom, Xu Wenshan, came to escort the bride, taking Wen Ruyue back to the County Lord’s mansion. From then on, Xu Wenshan lived with Wen Ruyue there.
“Does this mean Wen Ruyue is officially married?” Ji Xianxian inquired of Yin Hui during the meal.
Yin Hui responded, “He’s of a lower status, so it’s customary for him to live with the County Lord.”
Similar to how some sons-in-law resided with the Princess in her mansion, the children they bore still carried the son-in-law’s surname and were not considered members of the royal family.
Ji Xianxian cast a glance at the Eldest Princess but remained silent.
The Second Princess, Wei Shan, also cast a glance at the Eldest Princess, but she did not feel envious. Despite living with the Yang family since her marriage, the Yangs had risen to prominence as a new noble family in Jinling. Moreover, both her father-in-law and husband, Yang Pengju, were highly regarded by her own father. In contrast, while the Eldest Princess wielded influence within the Princess Mansion, her husband, Zhao Mao, was viewed unfavorably within noble circles, unable to command respect anywhere he went.
The Eldest Princess didn’t care what Ji Xianxian and Wei Shan thought of her at all. The two women who only knew how to compare and show off had that kind of vision.
The Eldest Princess cared more about Wen Ruyue’s marriage.
Xu Wenshan was merely a low-ranking official, holding the position of an eighth-rank Zhaomo. Wei Luo’s choice of such a husband for his cousin, Wen Ruyue, raised questions. Could it be that he harbored a strong dislike for Wen Ruyue and did not wish to go through the trouble of finding a more suitable match? Or perhaps, Wei Luo intentionally opted for this match to demonstrate his lack of ambition or desire for power?
The Eldest Princess smiled.
As a child, her third brother was quiet and occasionally seemed vulnerable, prompting her to protect him from any bullying by her second brother. Even as he grew older, her third brother remained reserved, but rather than appearing pitiful, it only added to the impression that he harbored a depth and complexity that was challenging to fathom.
After the banquet was over, the guests left.
