Reborn Lady - Chapter 341
Not only Yin Hui was worried, but Xu Qingwan and Ji Xianxian were also concerned. As for Fu Shan and Wang Junfang, their children were still young, so they didn’t need to go.
After the palace banquet ended, it was already one o’clock. Even there, New Year’s Eve was freezing cold.
The shadows intertwined as Yin Hui led Xiaong Ning, finally reuniting with Wei Luo and her sons.
Xiao Ning was sleepy, longing to hug her father when she saw him.
Back then, Wei Luo could walk from the Qinzheng Hall in the Yan Palace to the Chengxin Hall in the East Harem while holding Yin Hui. Now, it was even easier to hold his little daughter.
Yin Hui held Xiao Heng with one hand and Brother Xun with the other.
The children were sensible, remaining quiet in the palace until they exited and entered their carriage. Xiao Xun waited for the family of five to sit down before quietly asking his mother, “Mother, does the Imperial Grandfather want to take my brother to the border?”
Yin Hui smiled and replied, “It seems so. We’ll have to wait for the Emperor Grandfather to confirm the specific departure time.”
Xiao Xun glanced at his brother beside him, his eyes slowly turning red.
Yin Hui hadn’t anticipated her youngest son’s tears coming so quickly. Witnessing this, her own eyes welled up, and she hastily turned to her daughter, held in Wei Luo’s arms, pretending to adjust her cloak.
Xiao Heng comforted his younger brother, “The Emperor Grandfather said that we might not set off until April, which is still quite some time away.”
Xiao Xun leaned his head back on his brother’s shoulder, silently shedding tears.
Once his brother left, he would be studying in the palace alone, with no one to accompany him. When his father checked his homework, he would be alone.
The more Xiao Xun dwelled on it, the harder it became to suppress his tears. They streamed down his face, and he dared not wipe them away, fearing his father’s reprimand if caught.
Though Xiao Heng knew his younger brother was crying, with their father present, he had to discreetly assist his sibling in concealing it.
“Father, why does the Imperial Grandfather want to patrol the border?” Xiao Heng inquired with curiosity.
Wei Luo glanced at his wife and then at his youngest son, who was tilting his head. Suddenly, he understood why Xiao Xun was often fearful of him. It appeared that Xiao Xun not only bore a striking resemblance to Yin Hui but also inherited her timid and tearful temperament.
However, in such moments, Wei Luo became even more cautious, fearing that his wife and son might burst into fiercer tears. Pretending not to notice anything, he first explained to Xiao Heng the significance of border patrols, detailing the type of training his son would undergo when accompanying the Emperor.
Xiao Heng listened intently, and even Xiao Xun, initially crying, found himself drawn in by his father’s words, gradually ceasing his tears.
Several mansions lay not far from their location, and before Wei Luo could finish speaking, they arrived at the Shu Mansion.
Wei Luo instructed Heng and Xun, “Go to sleep now, and we’ll continue tomorrow.”
Both the little brothers obediently nodded.
Wei Luo then escorted Xiao Ning back to her room, while Yin Hui accompanied her sons. The two brothers often slept together, and that night was no exception.
Yin Hui remained until the children finished washing and lay down under the covers.
Xiao Heng gazed at his mother beside the bed and spoke with a smile, “Mother, don’t worry. Even if we leave tomorrow, the Imperial Grandfather will take good care of us.”
With the Imperial Grandfather present, who would dare to bully them?
On the contrary, Xiao Heng eagerly anticipated patrolling the border.
Yin Hui looked at her son’s face, resembling Wei Luo’s, and smiled. “Alright, it’s still early to set off anyway. Don’t worry about it, Xiao Xun. Go to sleep.”
Xiao Xun nodded, his little hand under the blanket reaching to hug his brother’s arm.
Yin Hui drew the curtain, left a lamp lit behind, and departed. Upon exiting, she spotted Wei Luo standing under the eaves of the corridor, evidently waiting for some time.
“Why are you here?” Yin Hui walked to his side and subconsciously took his arm.
Wei Luo looked into her eyes, but the light was dim, so he couldn’t tell if she was crying in the room.
“Why did you stay for so long?” He countered.
Yin Hui remained silent.
Back in the backyard, upon entering the main room, Wei Luo looked at her face.
Yin Hui didn’t easily shed tears and shot him a stern look.
During their time at the Yan Palace, the family had a tradition of staying up late, often not retiring until midnight. Now, with separate residences, Wei Luo refrained from enforcing such habits on the children. Instead of sitting up to keep watch, he preferred to lie comfortably in bed.
Once inside the bed, Yin Hui nestled into his arms, her expression filled with worry and sighs.
Wei Luo gently patted her head and remarked, “Si Lang is meant to go as well. So what’s there to worry about?”
Though Wei Luo harbored some concerns about his son embarking on a long journey at such a young age, he understood that if only the eldest and third sons were chosen, it would leave the second one feeling neglected, and likewise for him.
The Emperor had named the grandsons from all three families, including those from concubines, indicating his desire for every grandson to succeed, rather than solely favoring the Crown Prince’s offspring.
Moreover, patrolling the border would indeed foster Xiao Heng’s growth.
Yin Hui comprehended the reality, though the revelation had come suddenly, she knew it would take time to adjust.
“Da Lang and San lang are brothers, Er Lang and Si Lang are inseparable, but our son has no companionship,” Yin Hui lamented bitterly.
Wei Luo responded, “That’s also beneficial. Xiao Heng can focus on his studies without having to worry about looking after his younger siblings like Xiao Xun or Ba Lang.”
As a father, Wei Luo understood well which cousin his child was closer to.
Yin Hui then thought of her youngest son again, saying, “Xiao Xun seems even more reluctant to see Xiao Heng leave than I am.”
Wei Luo said, “He’ll adapt. With the older ones gone, it’s just him, Liu Lang, and Ba Lang at the study Hall. If Ba Lang and him are united, they won’t be bullied by Liu Lang.”
Liu Lang, being a concubine born, lacked the confidence of Er Lang and San Lang.
Yin Hui belatedly realized that regardless of what she said, Wei Luo would always find a way to comfort her.
“Never mind, perhaps this is actually a good thing. We can’t afford to disregard Father’s painstaking efforts,” Yin Hui remarked.
