Reborn Lady - Chapter 339
In terms of family backgrounds, both were suitable for his cousin. The Shen family did not have the potential for in-law or sister-in-law gossiping. Xu’s parents were far away in Pingcheng, and they have an eldest son to take care of them, so they were unlikely to move to Jinling to reside with their official son.
After confirming the candidate, the next step was to introduce Wen Ruyue to them.
Yin Hui took Wen Ruyue to the mansion ahead of time, and the two hid in the next room. Wei Luo found another reason to summon Shen Hong and Xu Wenshan to the palace.
These two individuals appeared quite similar; both were upright, but Shen Hong seemed more serious, while Xu Wenshan had a gentle smile.
Initially, Yin Hui presumed Wen Ruyue would select the more promising Shen Hong, but Wen Ruyue hesitated for a moment before declaring, “Cousin-in-law, I choose Mr. Xu.”
Yin Hui asked curiously, “Could you share the reason?”
Wen Ruyue lowered her head in embarrassment and replied, “I think he looks better.”
The real reason was that she had seen enough of the cold demeanor of Xue Huan or her cousin, and she didn’t want to endure it anymore. With a person like Xu Wenshan, she felt she wouldn’t be intimidated.
Yin Hui informed Wei Luo about Wen Ruyue’s decision.
Wei Luo didn’t inquire about the reason but felt proud that his cousin showed wisdom, not solely focusing on the size of the official position anymore.
With Wen Ruyue’s choice made, the next day when Wei Luo visited the Ministry of Punishment, he went directly to ask Xu Wenshan.
Xu Wenshan was taken aback.
Wei Luo said, “If you don’t want to, I won’t force it, so don’t worry about it.”
Xu Wenshan scratched his head and replied, “My lord honors me greatly by considering me for this marriage, but I wish to meet Miss Wen first.”
He added that passing on the family name or having children wasn’t a significant issue; one of his cousins remarried after being a widow, showing willingness to marry again.
Wei Luo took a deep look at him.
Xu Wenshan thought the Prince might be displeased, but he remained respectfully standing, refusing to compromise on his stance.
After a while, Wei Luo said, “Yes.”
In the evening, Wei Luo returned to the mansion and relayed to Yin Hui what Xu Wenshan had said.
Yin Hui smiled and remarked, “I didn’t realize Master Xu was so bold as to dare to refuse you.”
She teased playfully, but Wei Luo simply squeezed her hand and inquired, “What do you think? Should we let him meet my cousin?”
It seemed too contrived to arrange for Xu Wenshan to visit after only visiting the mansion once.
Yin Hui proposed, “It’s simple. After the nineteenth, when you all have your annual leave, let’s go on the twentieth. I’ll accompany my cousin to the silk and satin store to select some materials. You can ask him to stand guard near the silk and satin store. He’ll recognize the carriage.”
Wei Luo pursed his lips and cast a glance at her.
At that moment, Yin Hui sat on the bed with her smooth, cascading hair, her skin radiant and her eyes sparkling like water. Her slightly plump face rendered her stunningly beautiful and luxurious, her allure surpassing that of slender beauties.
In the presence of Yin Hui, any slender beauty would pale in comparison, appearing like a dim star beside the radiant moon.
If Yin Hui accompanied his cousin, Xu Wenshan’s attention would undoubtedly be drawn solely to her.
“Let Nanny Huang accompany my cousin; if you go, my cousin might feel uneasy,” Wei Luo gently pulled Yin Hui close, enveloping her in his embrace.
Considering the strained relationship between her and Wen Ruyue, she concurred with the decision. It wasn’t that she lacked concern for the cousin; rather, Wei Luo simply didn’t permit her to go.
When Wei Luo informed Xu Wenshan of this arrangement, he assured him that if, after their meeting, they both felt content, he would directly send a matchmaker to propose marriage to her mansion. If not, they could simply pretend the encounter never happened.
Respectfully, Xu Wenshan agreed.
On the twelfth day of the lunar month, Xu Wenshan met with Wen Ruyue. The following day, he sent a matchmaker to visit her mansion.
Nanny Huang arrived at Shu Mansion with a smile to announce the good news.
Yin Hui wasn’t surprised. Wen Ruyue possessed not only beauty but also a soft and charming demeanor that often evoked pity from men. Xu Wenshan, being a scholar with limited exposure to life’s complexities, couldn’t resist such allure.
Wen Ruyue had three matchmakers, and six additional ones hired by Yin Hui to assist. With Wei Luo finally having some free time, he personally selected a gentle pony for Xiao Heng.
Excitedly, Xiao Heng, Xiao Xun, and Xiao Ning all rushed to see the horse. It was a pony with a black coat, notably smaller than the usual tall horses, intended for half-grown teenagers to learn riding.
“Why is it only given to my eldest brother and not to me and my second brother?” Xiao Ning expressed her dismay, feeling neglected by her father’s eccentricity.
Wei Luo explained, “When you turn ten years old, Father will also give you a horse.”
Xiao Xun nodded in understanding, while Sister Ning persisted, “But I want it now.”
Wei Luo remained firm, “This is the rule, and I can not make exceptions.”
Though Xiao Ning initially pouted, she relented when Xiao Heng offered to accompany her to see the other horses in the stables.
Wei Luo began by teaching Xiao Heng how to ride a horse.
Xiao Heng, being tall with long legs, could have easily ridden a taller horse and reached the stirrups. However, considering the risks involved in managing a taller horse, it was decided that this pony was more suitable. As Xiao Heng gradually became proficient, Wei Luo mounted his own horse, and the father and son walked slowly side by side, gradually increasing their pace.
Xiao Heng proved to be steady, strictly following his father’s teaching step by step and never attempting to gallop wildly.
Xiao Ning grew bored after a while and ran off to find her mother to play, while Xiao Xun continued to watch.
After another jog with Xiao Heng, Wei Luo returned to Xiao Xun’s side. He called the youngest son over and then lifted him onto the horse’s back.
Since his eldest son was still learning, he couldn’t be distracted, but now he could bring the younger son along with him.
Brother Xun leaned against his father’s chest, grasping the reins with both hands while enveloped by his father’s larger ones, his young face flushed with excitement. Looking ahead, he noticed that his brother riding a pony appeared much smaller in comparison.
