Reborn Lady - Chapter 322
Xiao Heng, his straight eyebrows resembling Wei Luo’s, stood before the couch with a deeply furrowed brow. He inquired in a low voice, “Is something troubling you, Mother? Do you have something on your mind?”
Yin Hui, taken aback, responded with a question, “Something on my mind?”
Xiao Heng remarked, “Since Father returned with his cousin, Mother appears somewhat less happy.”
Yin Hui’s expression shifted slightly, surprised that her son had perceived her sentiments towards Wen Ruyue. Despite her genuine efforts to conceal any resentment, Xiao Heng seemed to have picked up on something.
“Why do you say that?” Yin Hui quickly masked her surprise and flashed a joyful smile.
Unsatisfied with his mother’s attempt to deflect, Xiao Heng pursed his lips and presented evidence, “You didn’t wake up this morning, and you seem to be in low spirits.”
Yin Hui was taken aback. Her son had misunderstood the situation, but she couldn’t reveal the true reason for her demeanor the previous night.
“It has nothing to do with your aunt. I wasn’t feeling well this morning. I didn’t want you to worry, so I stayed in bed,” Yin Hui explained with a smile. “Besides, your aunt was in a pitiful state before. It was only right for Prince Shu to bring her back and take care of her. If you think I’m upset about that, you’ve misunderstood, my dear.”
Xiao Heng, maintaining his suspicions, felt his mother’s words were mere deflection. He candidly expressed his thoughts, “To be honest, doesn’t Father want to accept his cousin as a concubine?”
Yin Hui was stunned.
Xiao Heng wore an “as expected” expression, paused, and consoled his mother in a low voice, “Mother, don’t be sad. I will talk to Father and try to persuade him to abandon this idea.”
Yin Hui observed her son’s determined face, noting the faint glint of fervor in his eyes.
In this life, Wei Luo didn’t wish to accept Wen Ruyue as a concubine. He had stated that in her previous life. If she couldn’t persuade Wei Luo to change his mind when she woke up the next day, and Wei Luo still remained steadfast in his decision, would Xiao Heng, upon learning about it, continue to protect his mother?
Curious, Yin Hui wiped the corners of her eyes and gestured for her son to sit beside her.
During the day, Xiao Heng had already formulated persuasive words to address his father. Despite being called out by the master for daydreaming and almost facing punishment, he remained resolute in his decision.
When his mother posed a question, Brother Heng spoke with apparent reason.
No matter how sensible a ten-year-old child was, how could he understand the twists and turns between a man and a woman? The reasons Xiao Heng listed weren’t convincing to Yin Hui.
But this was her son, a good boy who, out of concern for his mother, had the courage to approach his cold-faced father to argue.
Yin Hui embraced Xiao Heng, who was already as tall as her shoulders, weeping and laughing simultaneously, “Silly Heng, Mother was truly just uncomfortable, not what you guessed. Grandma accepted her in the morning as an adopted daughter, and she shares a brother-sister relationship with your father. How could your father accept his own sister as a concubine?”
Xiao Heng was stunned.
Yin Hui kissed the top of his head and gently shook him while hugging him, “But Xiao Heng cares about Mother so much. Mother is very happy.”
Xiao Heng blushed, already embarrassed when his mother approached him.
In the evening, when Wei Luo returned, Xiao Heng never dared to face his wronged father. Wei Luo noticed something unusual about his eldest son, but with his cousin present, he refrained from asking immediately.
Yin Hui mentioned the Imperial Decree with a smile, noting that Wen Ruyue appeared too embarrassed to take the initiative in sharing such a joyful occasion.
Wei Luo had spent the day working and only just found out about this. He asked Yin Hui, “Where is the mansion?”
Yin Hui gestured to Wen Ruyue, saying, “See how much Prince Shu cares about you, cousin. Show him the Imperial Decree and the map.”
Seeing his wife’s radiant smile, Wei Luo’s heart tightened. He had merely asked casually—did she misunderstand again?
Wei Luo was about to suggest there was no need for unnecessary actions, but Wen Ruyue had already instructed the maid beside her to fetch it.
Wei Luo had no choice but to drink tea.
The young maid quickly returned with two items. Wei Luo read the Imperial Decree and said to Wen Ruyue, “Tomorrow morning, go to the palace to express your gratitude.”
Wen Ruyue nodded, watching her cousin pick up the map of the mansion again with vague anticipation. If she were to shed tears and subtly suggest to her cousin to buy her a house, the one her cousin would buy might surpass the one granted by the Emperor.
After Wei Luo unfolded the map, examined the layout of the mansion, and then looked at the location marked in text, he sighed secretly. Such a prime location, once again tainted by personal matters involving his mother and concerns of the Emperor.
Putting away the map, Wei Luo told Wen Ruyue, “This mansion is excellent. I don’t think the layout needs any changes. Let the Ministry of Industry renovate it as it is.”
The title of the County Lord was already a gift; there was no need to cause additional troubles for the Ministry of Industry. Besides, the current setting of the mansion was indeed elegant enough.
Wen Ruyue looked at her cousin’s resolute face and nodded with a smile, “Well, I thought so too.”
After the meal, Wen Ruyue left, and Wei Luo continued to check Xiao Heng and Xiao Xun’s homework. Unprecedentedly, Xiao Heng, who always answered fluently and only struggled when his father posed a challenge, got stuck several times that night, even on the simplest questions.
Each time he faltered, Wei Luo frowned. Therefore, Yin Hui explained, “I didn’t come out of my room this morning, so Xiao Heng thought I was sick and worried all day.”
Hearing her words, Xiao Heng blushed again.
