Reborn Lady - Chapter 261
On the fifth day of the twelfth lunar month, Yin Rong brought her two children to the Shu Mansion as promised.
Yin Hui sent Jinzhan to pick them up.
Jinzhan had been in the Yin family since she was seven or eight years old and had always been by Yin Hui’s side. During the youthful quarrels between Yin Rong and Yin Hui, Jinzhan stood as a bystander, provoking anger in Yin Rong.
Nevertheless, Yin Rong had to put on a smile in front of Jinzhan.
Yin Rong felt genuinely upset. If both she and Yin Hui had married into ordinary official families, Yin Hui would have personally come out to greet her during the visit.
“Madam, please,” Jinzhan said, putting aside the old grievances within the Yin family and behaving with composure. Her experience in the Yan Mansion made her no less capable than the old maids trained by the royals.
Yin Rong smiled, holding her daughter in one hand and her son in the other. Jinzhan thoughtfully slowed down her pace to avoid any embarrassment caused by haste.
Wei Luo went to work, Xiao Heng and Xiao Xun went to study in the palace; thus, only Yin Hui and Xiao Ning were at home.
When Yin Rong entered the courtyard, Yin Hui led Xiao Ning to the door and smiled at Yin Rong from a distance, saying, “Sister is here.”
The weather was fine, and the bright sunshine illuminated the front of the hall. Yin Rong strolled around the corridor, glancing over to see Yin Hui coming out with a smile.
Contrary to her expectations, Yin Hui, crowned as a princess, did not dress up very grandly. She wore a simple red robe and a gold hairpin on her head, reflecting a fair and bright beautiful face.
Yin Rong unconsciously slowed down.
The nobility of the Yan Palace had evidently been nourishing, making Yin Hui more beautiful than Yin Rong remembered. If Yin Hui in front of the pavilion was likened to a rose on the wall, the current Yin Hui had transformed into a nourished, graceful, and luxurious peony, destined to be praised by literati and poets.
Yin Hui’s usual interactions were with the relatives of the Emperor, and before coming to Beijing, she also dealt with the wives of some small officials of seventh and eighth rank.
“The courtier’s wife pays homage to the Princess.”
Recalling Jiang Weijia’s instructions, upon approaching, Yin Rong bowed down in a respectful manner.
Yin Hui was surprised by her politeness and immediately stepped forward. She grabbed Yin Rong’s arm in time and said with a smile, “My sister, why should you be so polite in front of me?”
Yin Rong raised her head.
In Yin Hui’s eyes, her cousin didn’t change much from what she remembered. She was simply a woman, with a demeanor a little calmer than before and a hint of shyness.
Was she afraid of her?
Yin Hui found it strange that despite her being King Yan’s granddaughter-in-law with a high status, Mrs. Zhao, and Yin Rong, never showed any fear. They treated her purely as their own relative, without being overly polite.
“It’s been so many years, why haven’t you written a letter? I didn’t even know where you went with my brother-in-law, let alone that I became an aunt.”
Yin Hui looked at the two children beside Yin Rong with a smile.
Yin Rong first introduced, “This is Ah Ru, who is five years old this year, and this is Ah Zhi, who is three years old.”
Yin Hui had long forgotten Jiang Weijia’s appearance and only looked at the siblings of the Jiang family. Jiang Ru resembled Yin Rong, while Jiang Zhi had delicate features, likely inherited from Jiang Weijia.
“Ning Ning, there are your cousins,” Yin Hui said, bringing Xiao Ning over.
Xiao Ning looked at the Jiang siblings and obediently called them, “Cousins.”
Jiang Ru had a quiet smile, while Jiang Zhi seemed a bit resigned, holding his sister’s hand with his small hand.
The children were handed over to the wet nurse, and Yin Hui invited Yin Rong to drink tea in the hall.
Yin Rong first apologized for Yin Wen’s matter.
Yin Hui vaguely guessed why Yin Rong became shy and said softly, “He is responsible for his own actions. Even the Emperor doesn’t mind. So the Prince and I will not blame you. Please sit down. If you salute me at every turn, it’s strange.”
Yin Rong then retreated to the chair.
Yin Hui was quite curious about her and Jiang Weijia’s experiences over the years, so she asked.
Yin Rong talked about Jiang Weijia’s two transfers after marriage, both as the seventh-rank county magistrate, all the way from north to south. As they approached the capital, it was a good thing.
Yin Hui sincerely praised, “Brother-in-law abandoned the dark and turned to the bright, making great contributions to the Emperor. He was wise and decisive, truly admirable.” She inquired, “How does brother-in-law treat you?”
Yin Rong lowered her head shyly, clutching her handkerchief, and said, “He treats me well.”
In all fairness, Jiang Weijia treated her really well, never leveraging her generous dowry or relying on her status as an official. He did not look down on her and calmly discussed anything with her. He often mentioned her when receiving people and refrained from taking any concubines. However, Yin Rong always felt a layer of separation between her and Jiang Weijia. His occasional indifference and sensitivity always sent chills down her spine.
For instance, Jiang Weijia obviously investigated the relationship between the two branches of the Yin family, but he didn’t show it at all, suddenly taunting her when she was about to write a letter. It felt as if Jiang Weijia had a third eye, watching her every move, leaving all her selfishness with nowhere to hide.
“What about you? The Prince must be very good to you,” Yin Rong tried to ask.
Of course, Yin Hui wanted to share her experience, and Wei Luo in this new life was indeed more humane than in his previous life. He didn’t indulge in gossip, but he would share anything related to the Yin family. Once she got used to Wei Luo’s coldness, she would feel it when he showed a hint of warmth.
At noon, Yin Hui left the three to have dinner at the Shu Mansion. Firstly, she was interested in Yin Rong’s married life, so they chatted for a long time without realizing it. Secondly, Xiao Ning found a new playmate, and Yin Hui was delighted to see it.
After Yin Rong and her children left, Yin Hui hugged Xiao Ning and asked, “Does Ning Ning like her aunt’s cousins?”
Sister Ning nodded, “Yes.”
It was a pity that the little girl could only say that and couldn’t explain why she liked her.
In the afternoon, Yin Hui took a break when Ji Xianxian arrived with displeasure written all over her face.
Yin Hui smiled and said, “Who made our Princess Chu angry?”
Ji Xianxian glared at her. “You can still smile?! I just went to the palace in the morning, and I heard from my Mother Concubine that my Father-in-law will make a draft after the year. He will fill the harem himself and will choose side concubines for the five princes, including the Fifth Younger Brother’s main wife!”
Yin Hui was startled, then joked, “Let him choose. Second sister-in-law, you’re beautiful. Even if a side concubine enters, she can’t overshadow you.”
“Aren’t you in a hurry? The side concubines are all selected from the famous girls in Jinling, and they are different from ordinary housemaids and even concubines. It’s not the same thing. They’re the hardest to handle. They dare to sue and even confront us if it’s too serious.”
Her mother-in-law Li Fei was an example! It was said that when Li Fei was young, she fought for favor a lot, and even the Empress dared not contradict her.
