In Chengxin Hall, Wei Luo sent Chang Feng to deliver a message, asking her to sleep with the two children.

Observing Chang Feng standing under the eaves of the corridor, Yin Hui looked at him. He lowered his eyes, his face calm and resolute. Yin Hui took a deep breath and asked, “Does the Third Master have anything else to say?”

Chang Feng shook his head, and Yin Hui let him go back. After arranging Jinzhan and Yinzhan to guard outside, Yin Hui returned to the inner room alone. When she sat on the bed, her legs grew weak.

In her previous life, when Wei Luo sent a message, it was on the eve of her father-in-law’s incident. Her father-in-law pretended to be crazy to lure Zhang Bing and Xie Gui into the mansion, beheaded them, and reclaimed Pingcheng in one fell swoop.

However, it should have been around the Dragon Boat Festival. Why was it so much earlier in this new life? In the matter of her father-in-law seizing the throne, Yin Hui feared variables the most. She was afraid that some things she had done before would affect her father-in-law and the fate of everyone in the Yan Palace.

Outside the window, darkness was settling in.

Xiao Heng and Xiao Xun were brought over by the wet nurses. The two little brothers had a good relationship. Xiao Heng, not seeing his father, pretended to be him and checked his younger brother’s homework.

The nurses and maids, unaware of the unfolding events, looked at the two little masters with smiles.

Yin Hui joined in the laughter and asked the maids to prepare the meal.

If the worst were to happen, worrying wouldn’t change the outcome. Yin Hui believed that her father-in-law also trusted Wei Luo, and together, they would spare no effort to protect the Yan Palace and the whole family.

Midway through the meal, a faint sound of fighting echoed in the distance. The faces of the nurses and maids changed drastically as they looked in the direction of the commotion with disbelief. The Imperial Court’s intentions to suppress them were widely known, even among the palace servants. The sudden noise of battle raised the question: Could it be that the Imperial Court’s soldiers and horses were rushing over to arrest the prince?

“Madam, this…” One of the maids began, clearly concerned.

Yin Hui, with a reassuring smile, replied, “They are rehearsing a play.”

Despite her easy smile, as the shouts of killing and the sounds of sword clashes became clearer, the faces of the wet nurses and maidservants grew paler.

When Xiao Heng looked at his mother, Yin Hui patted his head and said with a smile, “Eat, and I’ll play with you after we finish.”

Xiao Heng had unwavering trust in his mother, being a child who couldn’t comprehend the gravity of life-and-death situations.

Xiao Xun, even younger and more innocent, remained absorbed in his meal.

After the meal, Yin Hui took both of her children  to sit on the couch and played the game of General. In this playful skirmish, she took on the role of the enemy while the two brothers became the generals.

The trio engaged in running and chasing, sitting and pushing, until Yin Hui found herself sweating all over.

Typically, Yin Hui would instruct the wet nurses to take the children away when bedtime approached. However, that night, it seemed as if she intentionally forgot about the usual routine.

As the turmoil outside gradually subsided, Chang Feng and the other guards stationed in the front yard breathed a collective sigh of relief.

In the back house, Xiao Heng and Xiao Xun, now feeling drowsy, had their faces gently wiped by Yin Hui before settling down on her bed.

The two brothers lay beside her, with one in a deeper sleep than the other.

Yin Hui turned over, lying on the outer side of the bed. Her mind was occupied with concerns about the ongoing developments in her father-in-law and Wei Luo’s attempt to seize the city. Additionally, she worried about her grandfather and her brother, whom she hadn’t heard from for almost a year.

The Imperial Court’s apprehensions couldn’t justify abandoning the current opulence and prestige of the Yan Palace. Why should all the family members give up their good lives and willingly accept the punishment of exile to a distant place, solely due to the Imperial Court’s concerns? Even Yin Hui, not reconciled to such a fate, couldn’t accept it. Especially considering her father-in-law, who had faithfully guarded the northern border for over two decades on behalf of the Imperial Court, not to mention Wei Luo and his brothers, who viewed themselves as the esteemed grandsons of the Emperor.

Each side had its reasons, and there would be winners and losers.

That night, Yin Hui likely slept lightly for only a couple of hours. In normal circumstances, Chengxin Hall would remain quiet, with no sounds emanating from the Donghua Gate. However, that night was different. When the Donghua Gate opened at dawn, Yin Hui woke up from her sleep. Shortly after its opening, the city gate closed again, indicating that the palace guards were still in place, and it was their family members who had returned.

Wei Luo, Wei Xuan, and Commander Yang Jingzhong arrived at Qinzheng Hall. King Yan emerged from the back hall, his hair at the temples slightly damp, as if he had just awakened. Wearing his robe, he appeared majestic and graceful, much as before. Wei Yang and Cui Yu walked beside King Yan, impeccably dressed, whether they had arrived that morning or had been awaiting news in Qinzheng Hall the previous night.

Wei Luo began by reporting the situation in Pingcheng. Once Zhang Bing and Xie Gui were eliminated, the imperial soldiers in the city swiftly surrendered, concluding the battle promptly. With the arrival of reinforcements, out of the nearly three thousand rebellious soldiers in Yan Palace, only slightly more than three hundred lost their lives.

Observing his two sons, Wei Luo and Wei Xuan, King Yan noticed that their battle armor was almost entirely stained with the blood of others. Wei Luo, having been on the battlefield for an extended period, exhibited a calm demeanor, having faced both the thrill of committing acts of war and the aftermath of his first kill.

“How about the guard?” Inquired King Yan, turning to Yang Jingzhong.

Yang Jingzhong replied, “As soon as the heads of Zhang Bing and Xie Gui were delivered, the troops brought by Xie Gui from the capital surrendered. General Guo and General Zhang assumed control of the imperial troops simultaneously, and a total of a hundred and fifty thousand troops were stationed in the three Guard houses, ready for the prince’s dispatch at any moment.”

King Yan smiled lightly, treating the information as if it were anticipated rather than surprising. After his brief laughter, he instructed Yang Jingzhong, “You go back first, assemble the army, and wait at the city gate. Also, inform Feng Su and his son to come see me.”

Yang Jingzhong took the order and left.

King Yan turned his attention to Wei Luo. “Go to the Yin Mansion and bring Liao Shisan, Yin Yong, and his grandchild.”

Wei Luo responded promptly, “Yes.”

Without further inquiry, he turned and left.
