Despite Wei Luo’s haggard appearance, his aura remained cold. Even though Yin Hui had experienced that period in her previous life, she couldn’t discern the depth of Wei Luo’s sorrow for the death of the late Emperor.

“Have a sip of water first, your lips are dry,” Yin Hui poured a bowl of water and brought it over with gentle eyes and a gentle voice.

There were many kinds of tenderness, all of which change through the tone of voice and eyes. Some gentleness made people feel at ease and comforted, while some gentleness made people feel excited.

At that moment, Yin Hui just wanted to appease the sadness that Wei Luo might have in his heart.

Wei Luo could feel it. He took the bowl, lowered his head and drank it.

There were some things that even he couldn’t say, but Wei Luo was very clear that there was no sadness in his heart at that moment, not even as much regret as when Duke Zhen passed away.

Because his royal grandfather broke his father’s heart. He himself witnessed his father’s tears and pain, and he couldn’t help but complain.

Besides, Duke Zhen’s death did not have much impact on the Yan Palace. Once the Emperor left, the Yan Palace would never be as peaceful as before.

How could Wei Luo calm down and cherish the memory of an elder?

He didn’t talk much, and had nothing to say. The maids carried the water into the bathroom on the west side, and Wei Luo went in alone.

Typically, Wei Luo took a quick shower, but this time he stayed inside for half an hour. When he emerged, he found Yin Hui sitting on a chair. Xiao Heng and Xiao Xun were also present. Xiao Heng gazed at him anxiously, while Xiao Xun, still not comprehending the situation, sat in his mother’s arms. Unaware of the circumstances, he stealthily reached out towards his brother, desperately attempting to grab his ear.

Wei Luo looked slightly relaxed, sat next to Yin Hui, called Xiao Heng to him, and asked him what he had been doing these past few days.

Yin Hui breathed a sigh of relief, and signaled Jinzhan and Yinzhan to pass on the meal.

The heaviness of the funeral even affected Xiao Heng. Only Xiao Xun, sitting in his dining chair, ate with relish, and patted the table with his little hands when he was happy.

Xiao Heng nervously observed his younger brother, then turned his gaze to his father, fearful that his father might lose his temper with the younger one.

“Let’s eat,” Wei Luo said, serving a piece of vegetable to Xiao Heng, who could now rest assured.

After the children had fallen asleep, Wei Luo and Yin Hui entered the inner room. Lying on the bed, Wei Luo inquired about the situation in the mansion during his absence.

Yin Hui focused on essential matters, emphasizing the need for the family to mourn and pray for the spirit.

“Father must have been heartbroken by the edict,” Yin Hui remarked, expressing concern even though she suspected the duration of his feigned illness.

Wei Luo squeezed Yin Hui’s hand, reassuring her, “Since Father is unwell, the household may be in disarray for a while. You focus on taking care of the children and don’t involve yourself in gossip.”

Yin Hui replied, “I know, don’t worry.”

Wei Luo added, “Leaving the house on the seventh day of every month will be exempted for the time being.”

Yin Hui said, “Well, with such a significant event, I’m not in the mood to go out.”

Wei Luo, after contemplating for a moment, realized there was nothing more to explain. He withdrew his hand, saying, “Go to sleep.”

The room became quiet, with only the breathing of the two of them audible.

Yin Hui lay motionless, and in the darkness, she could see Wei Luo’s blurred profile.

It had been four years since she was reborn, and both she and Wei Luo had changed, but he still seemed to be the same person she was familiar with in her previous life.

That was fine. For the next three years, she sincerely hoped that the father and son would be as powerful and invincible as they were in their previous life.

 —–

In the Yin Mansion, everyone else was asleep, but Yin Yong and Yin Lang were still sitting in the study.

Yin Yong asked Yin Lang, “The Emperor passed away, and the Emperor’s grandson ascended the throne. What do you think he will do to King Yan?”

Yin Lang appeared more stable.

The old man’s question triggered thoughts in Yin Lang’s mind about his biological father, Yin Jingshan, and his first brother, Yin Wen.

While his grandfather was still alive, his father and brother harbored ill intentions, aiming for his life to avoid sharing the family property. Yin Lang knew that if the old man were gone, and his father and brother were still in the Yin family, they wouldn’t tolerate his presence.

Yin Lang wasn’t a bodhisattva; he couldn’t repay grievances with virtue when others bullied him. Despite appearing calm in the face of Yin Wen’s attempted murder in front of his grandfather, he harbored resentment deep within.

In the end, interests bred greed, and greed bred malevolent intentions. Some people harbored evil intentions, while others remained vigilant.

The Yin family’s wealth amounted to only a few million taels of silver, while the Wei family possessed thousands of miles of land.

“He may try to eliminate everything in one go. How can you allow others to snore on the side of your couch?” Yin Lang said in a low voice.

Yin Yong nodded, stroked his beard, and said, “We have already been tied to the same boat as King Yan.”

Yin Lang inquired, “What’s your plan?”

Yin Yong replied, “You can make enough money, but you only have one life, so you have to be cautious. This year’s business, let the stewards run it. We two will stay in Pingcheng and won’t go anywhere. However, you just need to know it in your heart; don’t reveal anything to outsiders.”

He feared that someone might interpret the actions of the Yin family as a reflection of the palace’s intentions.

Yin Lang assured him, saying, “Grandpa, don’t worry. I understand the importance.”
