Due to the support of the Kingdom of Wei, the eldest prince of the Kingdom of Jin successfully ousted his younger brother and assumed the position of the new Khan. Consequently, his daughter became the legitimate princess.

Following a heavy snowfall, the fourth master Wei Xuan was preparing to lead the wedding procession to northern Xinjiang to welcome the bride. Simultaneously, a wedding team from the Kingdom of Jin would journey to the agreed-upon location to send their princess.

However, he was unhappy at the time because he thought that his father did not value him. His fourth brother’s marriage was given by his grandfather and had nothing to do with his father, so the fourth brother would not misunderstand his father. 

The three brothers from the Guo family and Wei Xuan had developed a close bond. Observing Wei Xuan riding on the horse with a cold face, Guo Yuan offered a reassuring smile and said, “Don’t be upset, fourth brother. We’ve inquired from the merchants of the Kingdom of Jin. It’s said that the eldest princess of the Kingdom of Jin is exceptionally beautiful and proficient in the three languages of Jurchen, Central Plains, and Huns. Both Jurchen families and the Huns’ tribes have sent proposals for marriage, but the Khan of the Jin Kingdom has never agreed. He’s waiting to choose the best husband for the eldest princess.”

Wei Xuan sneered, dismissing the notion of beauty in the grassland. He remarked, “In the grassland, one is exposed to the wind and sun. What beauty could there be?”

Guo Jin countered, “This is wrong. Those exposed to the wind and sun are ordinary herdsmen. A dignified princess must be pampered and look like us.”

Wei Xuan, still skeptical about his fiancée’s appearance, questioned, “If she was pampered, how could the businessmen of her country see her? It can be seen that it is just a false rumor.”

As the two cousins praised the princess of the Kingdom of Jin, Wei Xuan became even more unhappy. Deliberately, he rode to the side of the reserved Wei Luo.

Wei Xuan rode on horseback and observed his fiancée’s elder brother, Prince Jin, riding close to the sedan chair. Despite the slight raising of the curtain, he couldn’t catch a glimpse of anything within.

As the bride spoke, Prince Jin’s eyes reddened, and he looked at Wei Xuan. However, Wei Xuan maintained his haughty expression. Prince Jin’s face darkened, and he left with his guards on horseback.

After picking up the bride, Wei Luo, Wei Xuan, and the others resumed their journey. However, due to another snowfall, they had to stay in a post station for an extra night.

As the snow continued to fall, Wei Xuan, feeling depressed, sought solace by taking a wine jar to find his third brother.

Meanwhile, Wei Luo was engrossed in reading a book. Upon hearing Wei Xuan, he put down the book and opened the door for him. 

Wei Yan walked in without saying anything.

Wei Luo, unfazed by his direct entrance, joined him at the table. Wei Xuan brought two wine bowls and, without uttering a word, filled them.

“Why drink?” Wei Luo inquired.

Wei Xuan, gazing out of the window, replied, “I’m not happy.”

He was only eighteen years old, two years younger than Wei Luo when he got married. Since he was a child, he was loved not only by his parents, but also by the uncles generals, making him the most lovable among the brothers.

King Yan did prefer the pair of dragon and phoenix twins born by Concubine Guo, maybe because he loved them, or the nature of the twins pleased him.

Wei Luo smiled and replied, “Why did you come to me? I am not good at comforting people.” This could be considered an explanation for why the Guo brothers surrounded Wei Xuan every day without taking any action. It wasn’t that he didn’t care; he simply wasn’t adept at it.

Wei Xun looked at his elder brother and said, “Don’t I know your temper? I don’t need others to comfort me, as it can’t cancel this marriage.”

Wei Luo nodded, picked up the wine bowl, and took a sip. But Wei Xuan kept staring at him intently. When Wei Luo put down the wine bowl, Wei Xuan said after hesitating, “Third brother, when you married the third sister-in-law, didn’t you feel unhappy?”

Wei Luo’s gaze turned cold, making it challenging to discern between emotions and anger. Wei Xuan, sensing the tension, quickly clarified, “Third brother, don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean anything else. Third sister-in-law is very good. I, uh, I don’t know what to say.” 

Incoherent, Wei Xuan grabbed the wine bowl and drank in a few gulps.

Wei Luo remained indifferent. Compared to the sympathy and comfort of the eldest and second brothers before their marriages, the fourth brother’s candid approach at least displayed a touch of brotherly intimacy.
