Reborn Lady - Chapter 149
The doctor left, and Xiao Heng, who had been silenced by the stern gaze of his father, finally could talk. Leaning on his mother’s lap, he inquired, “Mom, what’s wrong with you?”
He couldn’t comprehend the conversation among the adults.
Yin Hui tenderly touched the little guy’s head, wearing a gentle smile. “Mother has a baby in her belly. When the baby grows up and is born, he will be your brother or sister.” Hearing the news, Xiao Heng’s eyes lit up, and he peered at his mother’s belly, asking, “Can’t he come out now?”
Yin Hui explained, “No, he is still young. He needs to grow eyes, ears, hands, and feet like Xiao Heng before he can come out.”
Xiao Heng inquired eagerly, “Then when will he grow up?”
Yin Hui silently calculated, realizing that the child should be conceived in February. “November.”
Seated nearby, Wei Luo suddenly spoke, addressing Xiao Heng, “We have to wait another eight months.”
Xiao Heng, looking from his father to his mother, remained joyous. He started to ask various questions, such as whether the new sibling would be a brother or sister, and if they could play together as soon as the baby was born.
Yin Hui wanted to spend more time with Xiao Heng or enjoy some leisure, but it happened to be Wei Shan’s ceremony day. She had planned with Ji Xianxian to attend together.
“Go ask your father; Mother is going out,” Yin Hui smiled and pushed the little guy towards Wei Luo. Since the guests were arriving soon, she could socialize freely.
Wei Luo took hold of Xiao Heng, glanced at her, and said, “Be careful.”
Yin Hui found it amusing. Having been pregnant before, she was well-aware of her limitations and what actions were permissible. During her pregnancy with Xiao Heng, she had experienced genuine panic, but her husband had not been particularly helpful. At the very least, he could have offered some considerate words like “be careful,” “take care,” or “call the doctor immediately if something happens”. With a smile, Yin Hui went out.
Exiting Chengxin Hall, she encountered Ji Xianxian heading in her direction. Observing Yin Hui, Ji Xianxian scanned her from head to toe and asked, “Are you okay? I just saw the doctor coming out from your side and was thinking of checking on you.”
Initially, when Yin Hui first married, Ji Xianxian had harbored disdain for her. However, due to the vastness of the palace and the lack of interaction with Xu Qingwan, she found herself engaging more with Yin Hui. They began chatting about their children and spending time together to pass the hours.
Yin Hui smiled and gently placed one hand on her abdomen.
Ji Xianxian was surprised and remarked, “Really?”
For a young woman with a youthful and robust husband like Yin Hui, conceiving another child was not uncommon. However, the timing was fortunate, given Yin Hui’s embarrassing incident with her father-in-law the day before because of Xiao Heng. Ji Xianxian couldn’t believe Yin Hui’s stroke of luck.
“Did Wu Lang’s words come true?” Ji Xianxian asked with jealousy. Wu Lang, due to a poem, had won her father-in-law’s favor and subsequently had his wish fulfilled for a younger sibling. Ji Xianxian, captivated by the idea of a smart, adorable, and blessed child, even if born to a concubine, expressed her intent to spoil the child.
Yin Hui responded with a smile, “Children just talk. The doctor mentioned that my pregnancy is already one month old. What does it have to do with him?”
“Yes, it has nothing to do with Wu Lang; it’s all thanks to the husband.”
Yin Hui blushed, mostly due to her guilty conscience. She was frustrated before, forcing him to engage in the activity when she didn’t know she was pregnant.
When they arrived at Wei Shan’s side, in addition to Princess Xu, Concubine Li, and other concubines of King Yan, Xu Qingwan and Ying Wei were also present.
Most women would only get married once in their lifetime, so if the family had good conditions, it would be celebrated in a lively manner. Besides their own family, they would also invite relatives and friends.
Unfortunately, King Yan was far away, and the relatives of the old Wei family were either in the capital or kings in distant places. They mainly maintained correspondence and rarely traveled far for such occasions. The grandeur of wedding ceremonies had long been abandoned. King Yan had five sons and three daughters.
After praising Wei Shan’s beauty, Ji Xianxian turned to Wei Luo’s biological mother, Mrs. Wen, and congratulated her, saying, “Congratulations, the third sister is going to give you another grandson!”
Mrs. Wen looked at her daughter-in-law in surprise.
Yin Hui had no choice but to explain, “I felt a little uncomfortable this morning, so I consulted a doctor. I was planning to inform everyone in a couple of days.”
Guo Fangfei smiled and said, “This is a good thing. We are marrying off a daughter and welcoming a new baby—double happiness for our palace.”
“What’s double happiness?” Princess Xu arrived, catching only the tail end of the conversation.
Concubine Guo explained it again.
Princess Xu looked at Yin Hui and nodded with satisfaction, “You only have Xiao Heng; it’s time to add another.”
Seeing everyone congratulating Yin Hui, Concubine Li secretly glared at Ji Xianxian, as she was the only one with a big mouth. Why announce it loudly and steal the limelight from her daughter Wei Shan?
Wei Shan was adorned in a red dress, seated on the couch. Despite a slight unhappiness, she didn’t dwell on it too much. She was on the verge of marriage, and being the wife of a royal official’s son was meant for a lifetime.
After a lively banquet, everyone retired to their respective courtyards for some rest.
The men dispersed after the meal. Upon Wei Luo’s return, he found Yin Hui seated in front of the dressing table, lazily leaning back in the chair. She held a handful of black, thick hair, combing it slowly with lowered eyelashes. Lost in thought, she didn’t even notice Wei Luo’s arrival.
Only after Wei Luo cleared his throat did Yin Hui snap back to reality and habitually smiled. “You’re back.”
Although the smile was beautiful, it carried a touch of formality.
Wei Luo recalled the previous night when, annoyed by Xiao Heng’s antics, she had directed her frustration at him. Compared to her current politeness, Wei Luo found himself preferring Yin Hui’s earlier petty temper.
“How’s your body? Are you tired?” Wei Luo inquired.
Yin Hui responded with a smile, “I’m not that delicate. The child is still young, and it will take four months for signs of pregnancy to show.”
She then approached with a wet towel, intending to assist him.
“I’ll do it myself,” Wei Luo declined, reluctant to have a pregnant wife serving him.
Yin Hui also sat down on the bed. As Wei Luo washed his hands, he asked, “What were you thinking just now?”
