Make a Fortune and Become Well-off [90] - Chapter 38
The cord that held the light in the cabin was tied to Grandpa Jiang’s bedside. He stretched out his hand to pull the light, and it turned on. Quickly, he got up and came to open the door. Seeing that she was carrying a big frame on her back and a bamboo basket in her hand, he hurriedly went to take it, his tone loud, angry, and anxious, “Why did you come to the mountain so late? Why are you so brave? What would you do if you encountered a wolf?”
The wolves on the mountain would go to the village to steal chickens and pigs at night. Grandpa Jiang was frightened at the thought of his granddaughter encountering a pack of wolves coming down the mountain.
Jiang Ning also understood Grandpa Jiang’s worries and said with a smile, “I have nowhere else to go, so I can only come to you.”Â
With that sentence, Grandpa Jiang’s eyes turned red. “Next time you come, come early. Don’t come alone in the dark.”
“Sure,” Jiang Ning nodded obediently.
“Have you eaten yet?” Grandpa Jiang asked as he went to look for leftovers in the bamboo cabinet.
“Yes, I cooked dinner. Can I not eat?”
None of them mentioned Father Jiang and Mother Jiang.
Grandpa Jiang fetched water for Jiang Ning to wash up.
Jiang Ning had spent her childhood here with her grandfather. She had roamed all over the mountains and fields, becoming intimately familiar with every corner. Some of her clothes were still kept there. After a quick brush of her teeth and a brief wash, she was ready.
Grandpa Jiang arranged two long benches together and lit mosquito coils on both sides, intending to sleep there for the night.
The ranger’s bed was only 1.2 meters wide, quite small. When she was younger, Jiang Ning used to sleep with Grandpa Jiang on it, but now that she got older, it was too cramped. Jiang Ning looked at the bed with a hint of sadness and said, “Grandpa, you go ahead and sleep. I’m small; I can sleep on the bench.”
Grandpa Jiang pushed her gently. “It’s already midnight, go to bed quickly.”
Jiang Ning got into a playful argument with Grandpa Jiang, sitting on a bamboo chair and refusing to sleep. Finally, Grandpa Jiang had no choice but to go to bed himself, turning the fan towards Jiang Ning. She didn’t refuse and lay down to sleep on the bench.
That night, like Father Jiang before her, she experienced the unpleasant sensation of being bitten by the mosquitoes in the mountain.
She had covered her face with a straw hat, but when she woke up in the morning, her face was still stung by thirteen mosquito bites, and her eyelids were swollen.
At dawn, Father Jiang rushed up the mountain. He felt relieved after seeing Jiang Ning safe in the hut.
Living in the mountains, Grandpa Jiang cooked sweet potato porridge with boiled eggs and a pot of rotten radish, which had a smelly odor and a bitter taste.
If Jiang Ning wasn’t there, Grandpa Jiang’s breakfast would have been simpler—just a bowl of home-ground sesame paste, fried rice with water, or an egg drop soup with boiling water.
Seeing the rotten radish in that small porcelain pot, Jiang Ning suddenly understood why Grandpa Jiang’s health was so poor. Living alone, he was too lazy to cook properly and ate rotten radish three times a day. How could he be in good health?
Jiang Ning couldn’t sit still any longer. She peeled the eggs and forced Grandpa Jiang to eat them. Then, she went down the mountain to the tofu seller’s house and bought two pieces of tofu. After that, she returned to the Jiang house to get the papers and pen she had bought earlier, and then headed back up the mountain.
At noon, Jiang Ning cooked loach and stewed tofu for her grandfather.
Grandpa Jiang was very happy to have his granddaughter accompany him in the mountains. He woke up early in the morning with a smile on his face and went to inspect the mountains and forests with his old shotgun. Along the way, he looked for pheasants, rabbits, cauliflower snakes, and other wildlife. If he didn’t find any, he would go to the mountain stream to catch some crabs and fry them for his granddaughter.
Living up to his old nickname, Grandpa Jiang walked slowly with his hands behind his back and his back hunched over.
After finishing the outline and character design the day before, Jiang Ning officially started writing her novel. The title was simply My Years as an Investigator in the Song Dynasty.
The opening chapter introduced the heroine as a forensic doctor. Due to an accident, she traveled to the Song Dynasty and became the youngest daughter of an investigator in Kaifeng Prefecture. This youngest daughter, who was twelve years old, had learned some Kung Fu from her father. Amidst the recent uproar in Kaifeng Prefecture over a headless corpse case, she went to investigate the case with her father. She accidentally fell and hit her head, which made the female lead appear in her place.
Her father was troubled by the headless corpse case because the murderer couldn’t be found. The female lead, now in the body of the investigator’s daughter, followed her father and used modern crime-solving techniques to find clues. She guided her father, ultimately helping him successfully solve the case.
The female lead also showed her talent in the first case, which made her father pay more attention to her. When there were usually cases, if his daughter wanted to follow him, he would take her with him.
Jiang Ning started writing smoothly because she already had a rough draft in her mind, managing to write 6,000 words in one morning.
Eager to make money, she was motivated to write her manuscript. For lunch, she cooked a meal of fried lentils and loach stewed with beans. Noticing that the two plots of land cultivated by Grandpa Jiang in front of the house were full of long cowpeas, Jiang Ning finished her meal, carried a bamboo basket, and picked the long cowpeas. She then asked Grandpa Jiang to wash them in the mountain stream while she continued to write her novel.
After Grandpa Jiang washed all the long cowpeas and brought them back to dry, Jiang Ning started pickling the beans. When Grandpa Jiang wanted to help, Jiang Ning firmly stopped him.
Recalling that everything Grandpa Jiang pickled always ended up soft and rotten, Jiang Ning sternly refused his help, saying, “No, you can’t.”
After finishing the pickling, Jiang Ning wrote another 6,000 words in the afternoon.
Two days later, Jiang Ning finished the first 40,000 words. Then, she rode to the city with the crayfish she had saved, sending out the manuscript.
