Jiang Bai could still restrain himself. Tong Jingang was so happy counting the money, “Sister said she would give us a big red envelope. How big will it be? Will it be 100 yuan?”

His father’s monthly salary was only over 180 yuan. If he could earn 100 yuan in three days, he would be so happy.

Jiang Bai was more imaginative than him, saying, “My sister gave us ten yuan a day before, which is thirty yuan for three days. Plus the commission from the clothes we sell, I estimate it will be one hundred and fifty yuan at least.”

One hundred and fifty yuan.

It was almost as much as his father’s monthly salary.

Tong Jingang laughed loudly.

Tong Jingang’s family had two jobs. He was the only child in the family, and they did not lack money. Jiang Bai was still there. Well, there was no way he would squander the money of his good brother and sister. Moreover, Jiang Ning had not treated them badly, and she had promised to give them big red envelopes.

Thinking about the upcoming big red envelope, he wanted to go somewhere to play and asked Jiang Bai, “Would you like to go to the skating rink during the Chinese New Year?”

The ice rink was the liveliest and most fashionable place during the Chinese New Year. Young men, women, and children all liked to go to the ice rink to skate. Jiang Bai, who was already immersed in making money and couldn’t extricate himself, counted the money and refused without raising his head, “No.”

Upon hearing Jiang Bai’s refusal, Tong Jingang lost interest in going to the skating rink and asked him, “Would you like to go play basketball?”

Jiang Bai then raised his head and thought for a moment. There was probably no one on the street on New Year’s Day, so he nodded, “Let’s go on New Year’s Day.”

Until the 30th, Jiang Bai and Jiang Song were still nowhere to be seen. Father Jiang and Mother Jiang stood at the door every day, looking around, but they could not see the two of them.

Jiang Bai came back on the night of January 30th. There was no boat, so he took the tricycle to Tanshan, crossed the ferry, and then walked back. It was already dark when he got home.

Jiang Bai was in high spirits, his face filled with the joy of making a lot of money. He couldn’t wait to claim credit from Jiang Ning. Seeing how much money he had made for her in the past three days, she wouldn’t have to worry about her tuition fees for the next two years or so.

She could still have enough money to go to college.

When Father Jiang saw Jiang Bai coming back, he was still looking behind him to see if he could see the figure of the person he missed most. He then said anxiously to Jiang Bai, “Why are you back now? Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. Why are you only back today? Your sister said you stayed in Wucheng to work. Why do you still work when you are in your senior year of high school?”

Jiang Bai was stunned for a moment, and when he was about to answer the question, he suddenly heard Father Jiang ask, “Have you seen your eldest brother?” He crossed Jiang Bai, walked a few steps toward the ferry, stood on tiptoes, and continued to look towards the ferry.

It was already dark at that time, and all that could be seen was the ink-colored night.

Jiang Bai was filled with joy and enthusiasm, but it was suddenly extinguished.

He looked at Father Jiang and didn’t want to say anything. He went straight back to the house to find Jiang Ning.

It wasn’t until he saw his sister that his excitement returned. The two closed the door and secretly counted the money in the room.

Jiang Ning really couldn’t believe that Jiang Bai and Tong Jingang had made so much money in just three days.

Jiang Bai was squatting on Jiang Ning’s high bed, like a big dog asking for credit.

Jiang Ning looked amused and made a shushing gesture to Jiang Bai, whispering, “Don’t tell our parents about our money-making.” Jiang Bai was silent for a moment and nodded.

Speaking of which, Jiang Bai was also a very contradictory person. In his previous life, neither Jiang Song nor Jiang Ning lived with Father Jiang and Mother Jiang. They were far away from each other, but Jiang Bai was willing to stay in Wucheng and go back to his hometown to accompany Father Jiang and Mother Jiang during every year and festival. He also often said that when he got old, he would go back to the village to take care of himself and was unwilling to stay outside.

He never felt a sense of belonging to the city outside.

He was the only one among the three siblings  who could understand Father Jiang and Mother Jiang, understand their difficulties, and was willing to live with them and provide for them in their old age.

Jiang Ning was always willing to provide money to them but not for others. Jiang Song was not to be seen, only Jiang Bai, who provided both money and effort to Father Jiang and Mother Jiang.

But if one said he was stupid and filial, he was not. He was independent, had a temper, and did not listen to Father Jiang and Mother Jiang. He was not even willing to get married and have children. That was the most unfilial thing for Father Jiang and Mother Jiang.

Therefore, even if Jiang Song was invisible all year round, he was married and had a child. Although the child was six or seven years old, he hadn’t met his grandparents yet. But in the eyes of Father Jiang and Mother Jiang, Jiang Song was a filial son.

Jiang Ning finished counting the money and asked Jiang Bai to go out and bring in a piece of red paper.

Every year, Father Jiang would buy red paper and write couplets for the Jiang family. There was a lot of red paper in the main room. Jiang Bai went out happily and quickly returned with a piece.

Jiang Ning split the red paper into two and folded it into red envelopes. Each envelope contained three hundred yuan. She handed one to Jiang Bai, saying, “This is for you and Tong Jingang.”

Jiang Bai’s face immediately lit up with a big smile, and he clutched the red envelope tightly in his hand. He was so happy that he wanted to give the red envelope to Tong Jingang right away, eager to share the joy of receiving it.

He was still smiling as he walked out of Jiang Ning’s room.

The next day, during ancestor worship, Jiang Bai’s smile was so broad that it was hard to miss. Many people, unaware of the reason, teased Father Jiang about his son’s cheerful demeanor while visiting the graves.

Jiang Bai quickly turned cold and retorted, “None of your business.”

Meanwhile, Father Jiang was unable to feel excited because he hadn’t seen his eldest son. He had hoped that Jiang Song would return by New Year’s Eve.

It was already dark, and the Jiang family’s New Year’s Eve dinner was prepared, but the dishes were cold, and Jiang Song still hadn’t come back.
