Tong Jingang didn’t see himself as an outsider. Having never experienced the rush of selling, he eagerly jumped into the role.

He was naturally sociable, always smiling and engaging with others. He was enthusiastic and always talked big. His sales were even better than Jiang Bai’s, who mainly focused on styling the clothes for the customers. Many people wanted to try on what Tong Jingang had been wearing for the past few days.

Jiang Bai listened to what Jiang Ning had taught him over the past few days about styling techniques, color selection, highlighting body advantages, covering up shortcomings, and more. He also had some of his own experience in matching outfits. Carefully, he helped the boys choose their clothes and offered his opinions.

But many didn’t listen to his advice at all and just wanted to copy his exact style.

Besides the boys, there were also girls buying clothes.

During holidays, boys usually made plans to play basketball together. They might not leave the school grounds, but girls were different. Few enjoyed basketball or football. They either read in the dormitory or hung out on the playground. More often, they would invite close friends to walk hand in hand by the school gate or go to the nearby street to find something tasty.

All the best snacks were on the next street.

As soon as the girls left the school gate, they heard the sound coming from a store.

Everyone likek to watch the excitement, and the girls from Wuzhong were no exception. When they heard how lively it was over there, they couldn’t help but want to see what was on sale, whether it was something delicious or fun. The closer they got, the clearer the speaker’s announcements became.

They weren’t interested in gossip, but they heard the loudspeaker saying the clothes were cheap because the garment factory had closed down.

“It’s really all clothes that cost a hundred, two hundred, even three hundred yuan elsewhere.” It sounded unbelievable to them. These were branded luxury goods.

When they walked in, their eyes were first drawn to the clothes, but then they accidentally caught a glimpse of Jiang Bai’s face. After a brief moment of being stunned, their faces turned red with excitement.

But outwardly, the girls remained calm. They approached, asked the price, and even tried to bargain.

Once they realized the prices were fixed, they paid with normal expressions and walked out hand in hand with their friends.

As soon as they left the store, the two girls couldn’t help but glance back and excitedly whisper, “It’s him, it’s him! Wow, he looks even better up close. Why is his skin so fair?”

“He’s so tall!”

“Up close, you can see he has a few freckles on his face, but they’re not very noticeable. He’s still so handsome, even with freckles.”

“Who would’ve thought he was the grandson of the store owner?”

“He was looking at me just now.”

The two girls were brimming with excitement. After buying their clothes, they were in an even better mood.

They went to the next street to buy snacks and, after finishing their shopping, returned to this street and lined up at the chicken cake store next to Jiang Ning’s store. While queuing to buy chicken cakes, they peeked into the clothes store.

The store was bustling with people—boys and girls coming and going—and there was no shortage of customers. Yet, they could still spot Jiang Bai.

He was tall.

In Wucheng, it was rare to find someone over 1.8 meters tall. Jiang Bai’s height made him stand out in the crowd, a full head taller than most, making him easy to spot.

The landlady smiled knowingly and said, “You’re here to see Jiang Bai, right?” She winked at them with a knowing look.

So, his name was Jiang Bai.

The two girls blushed a little at being exposed. The landlady chuckled and said, “Everyone comes here to see him, just like you.” 

She leaned in and whispered, “Usually, it’s just his grandfather looking after the store, and business is pretty average. But when Jiang Bai comes, well…” The landlady smiled at them. “Look at the business now. It’s booming.”

Even her chicken cakes were selling like crazy.

She added, “This store is honest. Each piece of clothing only costs one yuan profit. The clothes are cheap, and the young man is good-looking and honest. Everyone comes here to buy from him.” She pointed to the new cotton-padded jacket she was wearing. “Look, I bought this from there  too. I also bought some for my family and kids.”

In Wucheng, people rarely used the terms “husband” or “wife”. They simply referred to their significant other as “family”.

When the two girls heard what the landlady said, they felt their purchase was worth it. Jiang Bai really was kind. He was not only good-looking, but honest in his business dealings. This made them even more excited.

Even though they were tempted, they initially resolved to just look and not take any further action. But once they returned to the dormitory, they couldn’t hold back anymore.

“I’m telling you, you know the guy from No. 1 High School who looks like a celebrity? I know his name.” The girl lowered her voice but couldn’t hide her excitement.

Many girls had seen Jiang Bai on the day of the joint exam. Hearing this, they gathered around curiously, though still maintaining their calm demeanor. “Really? How did you find out his name?”

Impressed, the girls thought she must’ve asked him directly. “The lady who sells chicken cakes told me. His name is Jiang Bai.”

“Jiang Bai.” One of the girls repeated his name quietly. It was a nice name. The person really matched it. (“Bai” meaning “fair/white.”)

“Did you know his grandpa opened a store across from our school, right next to the chicken cake shop? The clothes are cheap but of great quality. A lot of people are buying from there. Look, I bought this.” She opened her bag and took out her newly purchased clothes. “Jiang Bai is so gentle and thoughtful, always smiling. He even ironed all my clothes by hand. They’re so smooth, and the price is great. This one was only thirty-nine yuan. You couldn’t get clothes like this for less than seventy-nine yuan elsewhere.”

“I heard from the chicken cake lady that they only makes one yuan per item, and yet the store is always packed with people.”

Hearing this, several girls became excited. They jumped up, slipped on their shoes, and grabbed their money. “Let’s go check it out too!”

For the entire Sunday, business never slowed down. Even Tong Jingang, who was strong and full of energy, eventually slumped down on Grandpa Jiang’s bed, gulping down water from exhaustion.

People continued to pour into the store. Some came to buy clothes, but others simply came to see Jiang Bai. Some of the girls were bold, while others were shy. After sneaking a glance at him, they would giggle and run out of the store, leaving behind their clear, bell-like laughter.

Even after the store closed at five in the evening, girls could still be seen walking by, turning their heads to catch another glimpse of Jiang Bai.

Tong Jingang, feeling jealous, wrapped his arm around Jiang Bai’s neck and joked, “They’re all here to see you! Don’t they see how handsome I am too?”

He strutted over to the mirror, slicked his hair back with his hands, and admired his reflection.

Meanwhile, Jiang Bai happily put the day’s earnings on Grandpa Jiang’s bed, counting the money with a smile.

He wondered how much his sister would pay him. After all, he had worked hard to promote the store and sold so many clothes. Would she give him fifty yuan?

Just thinking about the possibility of receiving another “huge” salary of fifty yuan made Jiang Bai even more cheerful as he counted the money.
