Father Jiang and Mother Jiang had been waiting for Jiang Ning and Jiang Bai to come back, especially Jiang Ning.

Jiang Bai was in his senior year of high school and had few holidays, but Jiang Ning usually had two days off on weekends and three days off on New Year’s Day.

Mother Jiang was very upset that Jiang Ning never came back on weekends. In the village, she often complained whenever she saw anyone, “Even if she is studying, she should come back and help with some work on weekends. It’s good that she’s studying, but she doesn’t even come back on Sundays. She doesn’t think about her family at all.”

Mother Jiang felt that Jiang Ning was truly selfish and didn’t consider her family or her brothers at all.

Especially when compared to Jiang Hehua and Jiang Qin in the village.

Jiang Hehua had always had good grades, and she performed well in the high school entrance examination, which allowed her to directly enter Wuzhong.

Jiang Qin’s grades were poor, and she didn’t go to high school. Following her mother’s advice, she went to a five-year college to study to become a teacher. She planned to come back and secure a teaching job, ensuring a stable income regardless of circumstances.

As the daughter of the brigade secretary’s family, Jiang Hehua was a bit better off. She usually stayed home to study and didn’t go out much. Mother Jiang rarely saw her.

But Jiang Qin was different. She was the eldest girl in her family, and her mother doted on her, fearful of any harm. Her brothers and sisters were much older, so they treated her more like a daughter than a sibling. Every week, when she came home, her brothers and sisters would shower her with delicious food. The highlight of her week was always coming home.

Due to her family’s affection, Jiang Qin had a lively and cheerful temperament. She was studying at a junior college, so her classes weren’t as demanding as those of high school students. Every time she returned to the village, she wanted to find someone to play with. The only girls her age in the village were Jiang Ning and Jiang Hehua, so she had no choice but to spend time with them.

However, Jiang Hehua, like her brother, stayed home all day reading and studying and rarely went out. Jiang Qin could only tolerate staying at Jiang Hehua’s place for less than ten minutes before getting restless and heading over to play with Jiang Ning.

She was actually a little afraid of Mother Jiang. When she arrived at the Jiang house, she didn’t go in; she just shouted from outside the door for Jiang Ning.

Mother Jiang might hit and scold Jiang Ning, but she was always polite to her friends. She smiled and said, “Qinqin, you’re back. Your mother is so lucky to have you. You come home to her every week. The one I gave birth to, once she went out, she didn’t even come back once.”

Jiang Qin smiled awkwardly. She didn’t want to hear Mother Jiang say this at all. Knowing that Jiang Ning wasn’t at home, she quickly ran away.

After that, every time she came back looking for Jiang Ning, the girl wasn’t at home, but Mother Jiang was always complaining. “My Ning Ning isn’t as loving as you, is she?”

When Jiang Ning didn’t come back, Mother Jiang would complain to Father Jiang, “What’s the point of educating her? She’s only in high school now and already doesn’t come back. When she goes to college, she won’t come back at all. It feels like we’ve spent money on her education for so many years, only to pour it down the drain.”

Father Jiang was also puzzled. Why didn’t either his son or daughter come back? Although Jiang Bai usually only had one day off on Sunday, he had two days off for New Year’s. They waited around at home, but no one came back.

When Jiang Ning was at home, they didn’t think much of it. But after she left for high school, and they were the only two people left at home, they were shocked to find how empty the house felt.

Mother Jiang also felt uncomfortable. But she was more worried about her eldest son, angry at Jiang Ning, and had an indescribable feeling of emptiness.

She couldn’t analyze the source of her emotions, so she habitually said harshly, “If she doesn’t come back, then let her be. I wonder if she won’t come back even for the Chinese New Year unless she dies out there.”

Father Jiang was a little concerned about Grandpa Jiang. He said that he had gone to No. 1 High School to find Jiang Ning, but there had been no news after that, and he hadn’t asked anyone to bring back a message.

He wanted to go to Wucheng to check on the situation, but Mother Jiang angrily said, “Don’t go. They have legs but don’t know how to come back. Why do you want to go find them? Don’t think I don’t know you just want to deliver food. What the hell are you doing? Doesn’t it cost money to travel?”

If it wasn’t for the cost of travel, Mother Jiang would have rushed to No. 1 High School and dragged Jiang Ning back herself. As for what she would do if she wasn’t satisfied, she would have simply beaten her up.

Father Jiang also looked in the direction of Wucheng and said, “I don’t know how Dad is doing in Wucheng. He didn’t send a message back, and it’s making me anxious.”

“He wants you to worry about it all the time,” Mother Jiang rolled her eyes at Father Jiang. “The old man has this year’s patrol salary in his hand. He got money, but you’re still afraid they’ll starve to death?”

Mother Jiang was also very dissatisfied that Grandpa Jiang kept his salary instead of giving it to them. In her opinion, since they were the ones providing for Grandpa Jiang in his old age, his salary should be handed over to their family and left with her.

How could an old man be so selfish? He didn’t give the money to his family but kept it for himself.

If he didn’t give them his salary, then when he got old and couldn’t move, she wouldn’t care for him and would tell her husband not to take care of him either. When the time came, his granddaughter wouldn’t care about him either.

By then, Ning Ning would have already married into another family and became a part of that family. She wouldn’t come back to take care of him.

Jiang Ning and the others had three days off for New Year’s Day.

During that time, their earnings shocked both Grandpa Jiang and Jiang Bai. They made a thousand yuan in three days. The grandfather and grandson sat together on the bed, their faces beaming with identical expressions of happiness. It was 1995, and a monthly salary of two or three hundred yuan was considered high. They made a thousand in just three days.

Jiang Ning and Grandpa Jiang sold a lot on the first day of New Year’s. Jiang Ning directly paid Grandpa Jiang a salary of a hundred yuan and said, “Grandpa, this is yours.”

She then gave Jiang Bai fifty yuan and said, “This is your salary for the past two days, and the other thirty yuan is a reward for the men’s clothing business you brought in from advertising at school.”
