Hera's modern life - chapter 4
There were two personalities fighting fiercely in my body. As Hera, I loved him just as much as I hated him. As Han Xiaole, I despised this stallion and hoped to never see him again in my limited life.
“Xiaole, why are you up so early? Didn’t you call and say you were tired from yesterday?”
As soon as I heard this familiar voice, I shuddered. With so many revelations, I forgot that I came here with my friends. She lived on gossip. If she saw me sitting with an unknown, handsome blonde, Gods knew that this would spread right away!
I tried to explain my situation but all I said was, “Wang Li, that, me, no!” I was flustered and stood up. I tried to explain it again, but my best friend who had been with me since elementary school was already too stunned to comprehend anything I would say to make my case. She stood with the same shock I had this morning while staring at Zeus. However, she was worthy of being called the queen of all the men with the aura she had wrapped around her. She immediately snapped out of her daze and her face broke out into a smile. She reached to shake hands with the gorgeous stranger.
“Hello guy I’ve never met nor seen before. I am Xiaole’s friend. You won’t mind her having a plus one, do you?” Wang Li questioned in English. Zeus had always talked in Greek with me, but he changed his tone and answered, “Of course, it would be my honor.”
Like a gentleman, he held Wang Li’s hand and kissed it. Instead of retracting her hand in disgust since she did not know the man, she giggled. I looked at her in horror. Since we graduated from junior high school, she had never bursted into such terrible laughter!
‘Not you too!’ I thought.
“Hey, Xiaole. I caught you! But relax, will you? It’s not like I’ll tell your husband about this little ‘affair’. You have the right to indulge yourself before the wedding, am I right?” She nudged the side of my waist with her elbow in a playful way as she sat down beside me.
She smiled very lasciviously, looking at Zeus with a fascinating look. She whispered, “He is too handsome to be true! If it wasn’t for you, I would take him. I bet that at least twenty people here are dreaming of taking his pants off. Xiaole, you must not lose face!”
I didn’t want to see Zeus’s smiling face. As an omnipotent God, he could understand any language, so Wang Li I beg you, don’t think that it was safe to speak Chinese before him!
That meant that Zeus heard about the wedding. I braced myself as he asked the question, “Wedding? Dear, what wedding? It’s been millions of years since our marriage.”
Sure enough, the next moment, this now shy husband of mine skope like a pure Chinese and immediately said, “Nothing!”
Wang Li, stunned and bewildered, asked, “What did you say?” She got no response and she continued to question me instead.
“Why is this foreigner speaking Chinese? And why did he say you two are married? Xiaole, you’re not married to this guy, right? Are you guys pulling my leg?” She nervously laughed, obviously unsure if I actually was married and that I have lied to her.
Defeated, I decided to tell the truth. It was what was best.
“Yes, we married with the blessings of all the Gods. We had vowed before the whole world.” Zeus frowned. After a moment, he supplied my statement by saying, “How long has it been dear? Around three hundred and seventy-four thousand years and one hundred twenty-one days?”
“It’s actually three hundred and seventy-four thousand years and one hundred and nineteen days,” I stated, matter-of-factly correcting him.
A good idea emerged in my thoughts as I knew how to turn this all around. I grabbed Wang Li’s shoulder and offered her a stiff smile.
“Don’t listen to his nonsense. He’s just joking. It’s been less than ten minutes since I met him.”
Wang Li stared at me suspiciously, “But he doesn’t look like he is joking. I think he seems to be familiar with you. But hey, I don’t discourage you being with a handsome man before you get married. But I believe Dongzi is good for you. Just don’t be stupid. You won’t find a man better than him.”
I smiled lightly. She truly was my bestest friend. Well, mortal friend. I nodded and reassured her by saying, “I know! I am not thinking about leaving him though!”
If I were Hera right now, I wouldn’t hesitate erasing all my memories of this world. I would go back to Olympus with Zeus in an instant and continue to be the Goddess I am. However, I have lived as Han Xiaole for twenty-six years. I have grown attached to the people I’ve met and the mortal I am today. I like my life now and I didn’t wish to switch it at all to be in that boring place and continue to endure the mischiefs of my husband. Additionally, I despise Zeus. He wanted me to experience death, and now he’s here as if all was forgiven. Wasn’t it better for him to wait for my mortal body to die and let my soul return to my life?
“Dear, don’t you want to properly explain all this to her so we can finally move along and leave?” Zeus intervened coldly, knocking his fist on the handle of the chair. This was his appearance when he was impatient. Although my husband seems to be frivolous and shameless, he still was the King of Gods. His anger depicted the wrath of thunder. Maybe at the next moment he will ruin this place free from conscience, killing everyone at a blink of an eye just to express his neglected anger.
After taking a deep breath, I turned to my trusted friend with sadness.
“I think we should talk about it.”
“Xiaole…”
Wang Li apparently felt that something was wrong. Zeus exudes the golden light of God. Even though a mortal can’t see it, she could feel the invisible pressure and fear. Yet she stood in front of me to protect me because that was the type of friend she was.
She continued her sentence and said, “Don’t worry, we will solve your situation.”
I smiled ruefully. I wanted to believe that she could. Even if mortals lived a short life, at least they had a heart. And even if I am not a mortal, Xiaole gave me the gift of having a heart and conscience. I softly gripped her shoulders and injected some of my power into my next words which made it sound like an exhortation. With this, Wang Li’s expression changed. She obeyed, sat quietly, and began to eat the food on the table.
‘I’m sorry, Wang Li. But this is the only way,’ I told her, but only in my thoughts.
Zeus broke me again from my thoughts, “Let’s go out and talk.”
I turned to the exit and walked out of the door. I didn’t want to create a commotion in there. Zeus isn’t used to my indifferent calmness. He cursed and quickly walked up to grab my hand.
“Hera, what do you want!” He exclaimed, not really asking me. “I warned you, don’t try to challenge the authority of the King!”
“Yes, my husband, the fire of my soul and the eternal light,” I said blandly, deprived of passion or love. I continued to reassure him, “Of course no one wants to challenge your authority.”
Just then, it dawned upon me that his command does indeed have to be followed. I could still stay here as a mortal! I turned to meet his eyes and state, “The command of the King of Gods can’t be opposed. However, the punishment you gave me has not ended yet.”
He narrowed his eyes and questioned, “What do you mean?”
I sneered in return and replied, “This mortal life is not yet over. I cannot go back to Olympus just yet. Remember, this was your command, dear husband.”
Zeus then scowled.
Although he was pissed, I felt like I won the lottery. I truly won this time and he knows it.
