Hera's modern life - chapter 3
I threw the crushed rose into the trash can.
I looked at my closed wardrobe and set out to find an outfit for my ‘date’. I sorted out my clothes by type and fashion with magic. I usually do my best to look perfect because Zeus always wants the best, whether it is food, wine, clothes, or even men and women. But when I moved my fingers, I snapped out of the daze. The attraction was too powerful! The main memory now occupying my consciousness was still Han Xiaole. Why would a modern woman try to please such a scum man? If I could go to the court and ask for a divorce from Zeus, would he accept this?
Unfortunately, there is no divorce in Olympus. I am still the goddess of marriage, divorce was equal to slap in the face 10,000 times as hard. I saw Aphrodite and Hephaestus falling out with the intense struggle every day. Hephaestus had a good temper. Once, he caught her and Ares together. From then on forth, they did not talk to each other, but they still didn’t get divorced?
With a sigh, I combed my messy hair and then went downstairs. Zeus was not used to waiting for people, and I had never really violated him. Although I was a Goddess, I was still his courtier. In this world, everything belonged to him. I wanted to slam the door in front of him, but the long and terrible memories in my mind made it impossible for me to do as I willed. After all, I have been his wife for so long; hence, I have obeyed him for so long. In the twenty-sixth year of my mortal life, it was hard for Han Xiaole’s consciousness to resist the memories of Hera which were a million years old. Maybe, I just need a little more time to let my will get the best of me and finally run as far away from Zeus. But to where? Is there such a place that I can hide away from the God of the sky, lightning and thunder?
As I stepped into the restaurant, I didn’t have to search for him. The line of sight of the waiters and the people around were the best road signs.Everyone’s focus was on Zeus. His blond hair fluttered along with the sea breeze and at that sight, I heard an European lady beside me gasping intoxicatedly.
“God, how beautiful can he get?”
Hello, madam, at his age you could be a grandmother! Even though his true age was much more than any living mortal on Earth, she probably wouldn’t have any problem with him being her great-grandfather. I rolled my eyes at the lady and made my way towards the room’s center of attention. I sat down on the empty seat in front of him and he turned his attention towards me. Instinctively, I smiled a smile that could melt any man’s heart and make butterflies flutter in their stomach.
Everyone, customers and workers alike, were staring at us. He didn’t care, moreover, he had become accustomed to this kind of attention. In fact, he still is arrogant and radiant about his alluring features. I saw the tea of a 40-year-old gentleman’s cup spilling over the rim, staining the white tablecloth as he ogled the bewitching sight of my husband. He held the teapot and continued to pour unaware of the mess he made.
I snorted. It was so typical for Zeus to show his God-like beauty. “Can you please be a little low-key and change to a normal appearance.”
He proudly said in an arrogant tone, “Why would I have to? I am Zeus, I have never hidden or changed my face because I don’t have to.”
That was a lie. It should be known that he would change his face many times easily to sneak peek. He could even shapeshift into animals. Very skillfully becoming a cute bird, he sneaked a peek up under a woman’s skirt.
The nearby, dumbstruck waiter finally remembered to serve. She approached our table and cleared her throat. She said in a slight quiver, “Sir, the meal you ordered.”
The young waitress blushed as her hands clung to the plate of the meal. Zeus saw her and saw she was smittened and nervous. He reached up and planted a slight kiss on the corner of her mouth. I could suddenly see the cheek of the poor child’s face burn red.
“Thank you. And did I mention that your eyes are beautiful.”
The child shrieked a little, placed the dish on our table and suddenly fleeted as fast as she could, nearly stumbling on her way. I stared at him in disapproval.
“The mortal can’t resist your power. That’s unfair.”
“Dear, you are still so jealous. Rest assured, she is not my type. It was just a little compliment.” He said lazily, dismissing his gesture and the small episode he caused. He reached out and caressed my cheek intimately. For a moment, I heard the sound of countless heartbreaks around me.
“A good lie can make them happy for a whole year. What is wrong with that? I am a generous God.” He winked at me with a playful look. Any woman in my position would have swooned at his gesture. However, I just sighed, rubbed my temple.
He had not changed. Why did I hope he would? Of course he certainly didn’t like that simple girl. His aesthetic standards were far too high for that. A variety of beautiful young people had long surrounded him. Yet every time he saw me get jealous, he would be happy.
Zeus brought me out of my miserable thoughts by saying, “Let’s eat.”
I looked at him incredulously. Sometimes I doubt that he was the God of Thunder. He had the skill of Eros, the God of eroticism. With such power, he could easily make men and women fall in surrender to him with just a snap of his fingers. Without the power of the Gods, he would just be a beautiful blonde bastard!
All this hateful thinking made me furious, fuelling my will to run the opposite direction away from this Deity. However, all I could do was hatefully poke the food on the plate with a fork, imagining the face of Zeus on it.
It was weird. It was obvious that we have the same lineage (born from the same parents). Hestia was still a goddess, Hades barely went out of the underworld. I had no lover except Zeus. Why did he and Poseidon get involved with Demeter together? Babies born one after another like a potato?
As if reading my thoughts, Zeus suddenly exclaimed, “Dear, don’t be angry. You know who my favorite woman is.”
My fury shifted into misery. I thought,
‘I may be your favorite woman, but your favorite among many others.”
In Greek mythology, Zeus and Poseidon both loved Demeter.
Zeus violated his sister Demeter, and the product of that rape was Persephone. They never married.
Poseidon once pursued Demeter. But he too raped her and she gave birth to Desponia and to Arion, a horse with the ability to speak human language.
