Demon King's Repayment - chapter 42
The winter snow was dignified and cold. A group of travelers hurried on horseback. In the queue, a young mage dressed in a water resistant suit stopped, turned his face and looked towards Queqiu Town not far away.
“Zhen Ren, what’s the matter?” The entourage by his side came up and asked.
“Someone is using the contract technique,” the man said, “It’s really rare to see such a contract array in the world today. The world is still full of crouching tigers, hiding dragons, which is not what my generation knows.”
In a bustling place in Jingdu, where the state religion Dong Xuan institute was located stood a magnificent Heavenly Palace decorated in gold.
It’s auspiciousness floated in the sky and decorated this place into a world of silver and jade. There came fascinating music from it, which gave birth to the heart of worship in the hearts of past believers.
In the depths of the palace, a man wearing a crown was sitting and meditating. A piece of green satin printed with spell runes was tied on his face, covering his eyes.
The room was quiet and the disciples beside him burned incense and held tea lightly, for fear of causing noise that may disturb Shifu’s practice.
The man suddenly raised his head toward the snow-sweeping window and said, “Hey, there is someone in the southwest who is making a contract.”
“Shifu, there are many seniors who can perform the technique of bonding. Why did it alarm you?”
“I don’t know,” the man smiled with red lips, stretched out his hand from his sleeve and raised it. The two disciples hurriedly held up a white jade disk in front of him which showed the spontaneous smoke. The cloud and mountain mist appeared in the disc, as if there was another world inside it.
The mage stretched out his palm, made finger gestures and swiped it on the white jade plate. The smoke diffused gently, revealing a sky full of stars and under the stars, there were small mountains, rivers and the village’s families. At the foot of the mountains, the thin snowflakes formed a small vortex, which was slowly circulating.
The disciples stretched their heads and watched Shifu’s magical ritual for a long time.
“No matter how I look at it, this is an ordinary bonding technique and the mana doesn’t seem to be so pure,” a disciple spoke carefully.
“The art of contracting is to guard against demons as apostles. Demons are cruel, suspicious and unruly in nature. If you want to contract them into servants, you must first use great magical powers to subdue them. Therefore, the process of contracting is mostly a bloody mess full of resentment soaring to the sky,” the mage faced the jade plate, as if he could see the scene through the thick green satin.
“I as a teacher for many years have never seen such an auspicious and peaceful array. It is a bit like the style of Sir back then.”
After the snow, Yuan Xiang was in the courtyard tying a cat climbing frame. The carpenter could only make the frame but the details had to be done by her.
As she was going to work, she wore an amber dress, casually put her hair into a bun, rolled her sleeves around her elbows, revealing a white arm and a pair of linen gloves. She was stepping on a piece of wood tying up the twine with the stick in circles.
“Wu Yuan, come, try it.”
A small cat rushed over and scratched its limbs on the tied rope.
The softness and hardness of this sisal rope was just right. It was also wear-resistant and it had a unique feel, which made the kitten want to grab a few more. It was very easy to climb up and down along the path, much more comfortable than climbing the big trees at home that were hard to grasp.
Why was it so comfortable? The kitten caught it happily and rolled down on the ground holding the whole pole.
Yuan Xiang lifted the stick tied with twine and pulled the cat that was hanging onto it to the ground.
“It’s not installed yet. You play with this first,” she took a rattan ball with a bell from her pocket and threw it out. The bell jingled all the way and Wu Yuan chased it out at once, hooking his front paws to flick the toy that would ring when touched.
The big black dog lying under the tree whined unwillingly, it didn’t understand. It was the strongest creature in the yard, but the owner once brought a little wolf to make it feel scared and then she brought a small cat which instinctively made him stay away from it.
Yuan Xiang looked at the little guy playing with the ball and remembered her playing with Nan He. At that time, he raised his snow-white front paws and lightly stepped on the ball she threw over, dismissively. He didn’t turn his face at her, showing an expression of disgust.
Was it really true that the more arrogant, the more attractive a person seemed? Obviously she already had a cat, but still missed the little white dumpling.
The ruthless guy didn’t come back to see her. Yuan Xiang angrily stretched animal skins on a wooden board.
The time in winter was very leisurely and the day was boring. She could carefully build a warm cat house for Wu Yuan. Every pillar was tightly wrapped with twine and every walking board was covered with soft fur. This little thing that had just left home lived in a warmer place.
She thought of taking out Nan He’s cushion, to wash and dry it. If he came back, he would have a place to sleep. She could make him a new toy ball, make it colorful, hang two feathers in it so that he might like it a little.

Thank you for the translations!! Would it be possible to translate the author’s notes too? I think in the notes for this chapter the author hinted that Yu Yao was the fish spirit all along or something
