Chapter 43 – Du Lin’s Party (3)

“Daiyu, do you think this is a good idea?”

“Yes, now shush”

Chen Daiyu put a finger on her lips indicating for Huo Shanxi to be quiet, Hue Shanxi nodded and made a zipping motion to his mouth. Chen Daiyu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

They continued observing the door, there was no one guarding nor anyone coming in or out.

Chen Daiyu motioned Huo Shanxi to follow her and placed her ear to the door, Huo Shanxi did the same.

Hearing no movements from inside, Chen Daiyu struggled to reach the door knob and slowly opened the door.

The room was mostly empty, containing only a few shelves with barely any books and a lazyly placed table and chair by a wall. Hua Shanxi closely followed her in, fearing they’d get caught.

Chen Daiyu closed the door behind them, and proceeded to the door that was beside the shelve. They could see people moving in there from the shadows under the door.

Chen Daiyu stuck her ear on the door and eavesdrop on the other side, while Huo Shanxi nervously eyed the door from where they entered. 

“-who invited that man here?!?”

“We didn’t invite him but his rumoured daughter, who knew he would come?!?”

“What if we get found out?”

“Why would Mr. Du invite his daughter here?!?”

“Because that brat asked him to.”

“…” 

The whole room went quiet, now Chen Daiyu was curious as to who the ‘brat’ was, since he could make all the men go quiet? Even if she had a hunch as to who it was, she denied it. 

The people in the room began to chat after the brief silence, some would be friendly while some would argue like old friends, though Chen Diayu could still sense the tense atmosphere from what they had been discussing before. 

Chen Daiyu couldn’t tell exactly how many people were in there but she was sure it was more than five. Confirming this, she decided it would be better to tell Chen Feng about this when they get home.

“Lets go!” She said as she pulled Huo Shanxi but before they could take a step, Huo Shanxi suddenly sneezed.

“Achoo-” 

The air froze, Huo Shanxi immediately covered his mouth with his hand and felt a chill go down his spine.

Chen Daiyu also froze, she had always worked alone so she had never encountered this situation before nor did she consider it happening.

There was no immediate movement from inside the room, Chen Diayu could only imagine what they were thinking.

Chen Daiyu quickly motioned for Huo SHanxi to help her slightly move the shelf in front of the door, hoping it would buy them a few minutes. 

“Run!” Chen Daiyu forcefully pulled Huo Shanxi and bolted out of the office before the men inside the room could even see a silhouette of them.

“Go! Chase them down!” A man quickly ordered his subordinates.

Once they were finally able to push the door open, they could only see two small silhouettes running down the hall and realized they were only children. One of them came back to report while the rest continued to chase them down.

No matter how fast they tried to run, the men would eventually catch up to them.

“Huo Shanxi, how are you?” Chen Daiyu was already gasping for breath. To her surprise, Huo Shanxi wasn’t tired at all.

“I’m still alright” Huo Shanxi frowned when he looked at Chen Daiyu who was already out of breath. 

Huo Shanxi realized it was his fault, he immediately looked around for a solution. He changed their course and pulled the tired Chen Daiyu to another corridor and opened all the doors. This would distract the people chasing them, giving them more time to escape.

Chen daiyu realized what he was doing and helped. Before the men saw them, they went into a room with a balcony that was relatively close to the ground. They locked the door quickly and looked around. 

“One sheet is enough” from the balcony, Chen Daiyu entered the room again and started looking for thin sheets. The lights were turned off, so they can only rely on their touch to feel their way. Huo Shanxi helped.

By the time they were able to find something, they could hear noises coming from the room next door.

They looked at each other and hurried to the balcony, having tied the sheet, Chen Daiyu insisted for Huo Shanxi to go first.

“But-“

“You can catch me when I go down, hurry up!”

Huo Shanxi caved into her pressure and went down first. Chen Daiyu heard their footsteps coming from the door, not bothering looking back, she immediately jumped off the balcony. 

Just as she predicted, they quickly slammed the door open. Huo Shanxi looked up and saw her falling, he didn’t even think twice and opened his arms wide trying to catch her.
