Chapter 40 – Chess

“W-what?!? How?!?” Old Man Shan demanded while Chen Daiyu frowned a bit.

“Grandpa, brother Yijun is sleeping. You should quiet down,” Chen Daiyu pressed a finger to her lips and glanced at Shan Yijun, who wasn’t even bothered.

Old Man Shan, couldn’t care less whether or not his grandson woke up at that moment, but he still obeyed his granddaughter and whisper-shouted at Chen Feng and asked him the same question.

“You guarded your frontline closely and left the sidelines open. You are used to my previous style, but you didn’t realize I have changed …” Chen Feng explained solemnly, everyone in the room understood his implied meaning. 

He had changed because of his little daughter. He wasn’t going to lead a dangerous life like he did before now that there was someone at home waiting for him. 

Old Man Shan understood and continued to observe the chess board.

“Have you learnt?” Chen Feng asked Chen Daiyu smilingly.

“En,” Chen Daiyu nodded solemnly, making her little face look so serious, Chen Feng couldn’t help but pinch her now chubby cheeks.

Seeing them lovingly bond, Old Man Shan can’t help but feel jealous… but-

“Wait… learn what?” Old Man Shan asked bewildered. Chen Daiyu and Chen Feng look at him in surprise.

“Yu Yu wants to learn Chinese chess, so i gave her pointers while playing.”

Chen Feng and Chen Daiyu gave him a ‘we thought you knew’ face that made Old Man Shan irritated at Chen Feng.

The room was quiet, Old Man Shan fumed in his own world. He couldn’t speak too loudly, after all Shan Yijun was asleep.

“How come I never heard you speak?!? How can you teach her that way?!?” Old Man Shan scolded Chen Feng for being an irresponsible teacher, while Chen Feng just smiled like he always does. 

Chen Daiyu panicked, thinking they were going to fight, “Grandpa it’s okay, I learnt,” she waved her hands trying to calm her grandfather. “If you want we can have a match.” 

Chen Feng fixed the board for them and started the match. Chen Daiyu had actually never learnt chinese chess and only learned it when Chen Feng and old man Shan were fighting earlier. 

While fighting, Chen Feng would look at her as if explaining everything, yet they never actually spoke. Old Man Shan found their connection uncanny.

At first, Old Man Shan was going easy on Chen Daiyu, considering that she only knew the basics. Who knew that the pieces would become fiercer the more they played, making Old Man Shan excited. He eventually forgot to go easy on his granddaughter. 

In the end Old Man Shan lost. He first admired his opponent’s work, but then he realized that he lost to his almost 7 years old granddaughter. He stared at them with disbelief.

Chen Daiyu didn’t wait for him to ask a question and pointed out his weaknesses.

Old Man Shan was speechless and looked at Chen Feng. Chen Feng smirked at him.

“Yu Yu, how about playing with daddy?” Chen feng pointed at himself.

“Okay,” she naturally readily agreed.

So she changed her seat and went to her grandpa.

When Chen Feng and Chen Daiyu played, Chen Feng didn’t show mercy and fought fiercely. Chen Daiyu frowned in distress thinking of her next move. The more Old Man Shan watched, the more he realized how much of a monstrous genius his granddaughter truly was. 

She was only taught once, vaguely at that, and she could already play a match against her father. But her weakness was that she only knew 2 styles. The two styles that she watched her grandfather and father play.

So in the end, she lost. After the game ended, she kept analysing the board looking for where she had gone wrong, she only came out of her trance when Chen Feng flickered her forehead.

“Father, go to sleep. I’ll bring Yijun and Yu Yu to bed,” Chen Feng said as he stood up. He carried the sleeping Yijun while Chen Daiyu followed.

Chen Feng put Shan Yijun in his bed, while Chen Daiyu went to her own room since it was right next door. 

When Chen Feng came out of Shan Yijun’s room, Chen Daiyu was behind her door still peeking through.

“What are you doing? Go to sleep.” Chen Feng patted her head and ushered her in.

“Dad- uh papa, can we play again tomorrow?”

Chen Daiyu asked, although the darkness hid her hopeful face, the hopefulness in her voice still reached Chen Feng.

“Sure” 

Once she had confirmation, Chan Daiyu abandoned Chen Feng, went to bed.

Chen Feng was bewildered, but he laughed it off. He knocked on her door and went in to see her already in bed, half asleep. He smiled to himself and patted her head. 

“Goodnight Yu Yu.”

He kissed her forehead and headed to his own room. 

Chen Daiyu woke up and cursed Du Lin a thousand times and killed him many more in her head, while her face remained expressionless and cold.

Today was Du Lin’s fancy birthday party. She, Shan Yijun, and Chen Feng were going to the so-called celebration in afternoon, thus she and Chen Feng couldn’t play chess anymore because by the time they got home, it wouls already be bed time. There was no way Chen Feng would let her stay up late.

“Good morning Yu Yu,” Shan Yijun greeted her as she came out of her room.

“Huh?” Chen Daiyu answered.

Shan Yijun flinched at how cold Chen Daiyu was, did she not sleep well?
