Chapter 32 –  Shopping Trip (4)

Chen Daiyu and Huo Shanxi played as many games as they could in a mini competition of who could win more. They were actually tied until they went to the shooting games, where Chen Daiyu kicked Hou Shanxi’s butt.

They decided to have an all or nothing rematch in air hockey, where Chen Diayu was losing by one point because she couldn’t reach out too far on the table. All of a sudden, Hou Shanxi paused, allowing Chen Daiyu to score a point. 

Concerned, Chen Daiyu looked up to see him looking sad and gloomy so suddenly.

“What’s wrong?” 

Huo Shanxi smiled sadly and tried to brush it off, though Chen Daiyu did not believe him. 

Frowning, she got up and ran off for a moment, leaving Huo Shanxi confused. 

She had been gone for a while when Huo Shanxi started to think she too had left him without saying anything. 

Ah, maybe because he was too weird. Everyone would run away eventually.

He wasn’t sure why he was so upset by the thought, he had only known her for a few hours. But at the moment that was the least of his concerns. Thinking back on what had been happening, he started frowning again. 

It was then that he felt someone tug his clothes, looking down again he saw a smiling Chen Daiyu.

“You’re back?”

“Of course I’m back, I just took a while trying to convince Xiao Li that I can manage myself” 

Though she was the one that had left her alone in the first place. 

She guided Huo Shanxi out of the arcade towards an ice cream place she had seen earlier. She believed that children could be easily cheered up with snacks. But even after getting ice cream, Hou Shanxi looked down and barely took a bite out of it. 

“Ah, your ice cream is gonna melt!” Chen Daiyu warned.

Only then did Huo Shanxi start to eat his ice cream.

They were quiet for a while before Huo Shanxi started talking. 

“My mom went missing a few weeks ago. People are saying she ran away with another man… but i know my mom would never do that”

They were quiet again for a while, Chen Daiyu didn’t want to interrupt him.

“My … my, uhm, father, he said that he was going to find her. But he hasn’t said anything since then. And … umm I just want my mom to be ok. But I am pretty sure she no longer is.”

He let out a few tears and Chen Daiyu patted him on the back. They kept their quiet ambiance as they finished their ice cream.

While Huo Shanxi was enjoying the company of his new friend, Chen Daiyu was recalling as many events of the novel as she could to figure out if they ever mentioned Hou Shanxi. 

But no matter how much she thought about it she came up with nothing, considering he seemed to be by Du Lin’s side she thought he would have been mentioned.

Realizing that she had finally met Du Lin, the male lead of the novel she had come into, she finally saw how truly bad he was. The child was no more than 10 years old but was already a creep. 

She also felt disillusioned with herself for the first time since she came into this new world. She had someone she wanted to help but she had no way to do so. She needed to prepare faster to make sure her family would be safe. 

All of a sudden, a ringing noise startled both of them. Huo Shanxi hastily took out a phone from his pocket and barely said hi when the person in the other line started speaking. Surprisingly enough, they were so loud that Chen Daiyu could hear them. Though it was only bits she understood that they were upset because Huo Shanxi did not do something. 

After a few minutes of this they finally hung up and Hou Shanxi looked up at Chen Diayu embarrassed, “I .. have to go. It was really fun hanging out with you!”

Chen Daiyu wasn’t able to say anything before he got up and left. After a few seconds of trying to process everything she heard and what her next steps were going to be, Chen Diayu got up and headed to where she agreed to meet Shan Yijun once she was done with her ice cream. 

“There she is!” Xiao Li nodded excitedly at the tiny figure that was approaching them. “I missed you so much!”

Xiao Li ran at Chen Daiyu and hugged her tightly for a minute before letting go. 

“We have to hang out again, ok?”

Chen Daiyu nodded meekly before she went towards Shan Yijun. Her face is full of cold sweat, she honestly didn’t want to go shopping anymore.

They headed back to their mansion, unaware of the storm that was brewing up.

Back at Du Lin’s house, Du Lin had confidently left his father’s study, assured he would get his revenge and the girl he had seen. 

Back in the study the man sitting on the desk adjusted himself before calling a number. 

“Have you got the results of your investigation?” The voice left no space for casual talk.

“I have got a new lead.”

“Your incompetence does not surprise us Du Hao, but if you want to keep being protected you have to get a real lead”

“No, no, no, wait. It’s real. The reports were right, Lu Ji had been sending toys to an unknown orphanage. The reason we couldn’t find the child anymore is because they, I mean, she was already adopted under the table. But by none other than general Chen himself.”

The person on the other side of the line did not say anything, so Du Hao continued nervously.

“Considering the treatment our people have reported, it is very probable that it is more than a simple adoption. It’s possible that the failure from 8 years ago wasn’t  truly a failure.”

“You’ll be happy to know your protection is going to continue, but remember to carry out your other tasks carefully.”

“Yes, yes, of course, I-” 

The other line hung up before he could finish.

Letting out a sigh of relief, Du Hao relaxed again. He hated being dependent on them but their connections were too good to pass up.

He decidedly took out an invitation letter, after writing in it he passed it to a servant and told them to deliver it. His new plan was going to go off without a problem, he needed to make sure of it.
